iRacing

I am finding it quite frustrating so far.

I like Nascar, but am finding this hard to get a run in.

I can qualify well - usually in top 10, but then when the race starts, pretty much every time I get T-boned or smashed into by someone.

I guess because I am just starting I am in the rookie division, but seems to be a fair few clueless people in there?

Just happened again, qualified 6th for Daytona race in fast car (230mph flat out 100% of the time)

Race of 15 laps - lying in 4th place with a few laps to go and then boom - someone literally drove right across the track and took me and three others out!

Two races in the skippy in the bag on the new pc, 4th then a 2nd. I managed a 2nd after a spin and ended up back in 11th and clawed my way back!

Best advice is plod around avoiding contact and do t worry about finish position, get out of rookies then you'll find the race craft better. My first couple of returning races was in mx5 just to get a feel and I nearly got dumped a class because I got taken out every race!

I don't bother with qualifying and at the race start I take it really cautiously. Pretty much most of the time i find myself in 2nd or 3rd at the half way point, after all of the crazy drivers have crashed out and fallen to the back.

Not sure what to do.

Two races is a row now, qualified 2nd in both. Had some decent racing going on in both; up with lead car and then boom - idiots ruining it for me.

I do wonder how the ratings etc work, I got turned by guy behind and then seemed to lose points??

You're in the rookie licence, right? It gets slightly better once you leave the rookie races. Your goal in rookies shouldn't be to race or to win, it's solely to learn some race craft and to stop "noobs" progressing further. Get out of it ASAP.

Thanks buddy, just not sure the best way to get out of it! ??

As it has relatively soft suspension it's very sensitive to pitch changes so the key is to be as progressive as you can when coming off the brakes.

It just handles nothing like a real mx5 once the back starts to slide.. it's a bit like they dont want you to slide it, which is fair enough as that is t the aim of the game.

Quickest and easiest way is to either start from the back of the grid or the pits. Trouble is that'll destroy your iRating and when you do finally get out of rookies the racing won't be much better as you'll be in the bottom split. The best way (IMO) is to keep on practicing until you can reliably run lap after lap at race pace, then qualify in front of the inevitable pile up.

To get of Rookie Class you need to aim to improve your Safety Rating (3.0). Do this by avoiding going off track, making contact or being hit.
I tend to start mid field, take the start steady and then weave my way through the carnage as the race goes on. It's better to finish lower down and have zero incidents than win with 5+ incidents.

When in rookies and lower splits, the idea is to stay clear of trouble first and foremost. Dont even worry about irating, I'd you start from pits or at the back I guarantee within a few laps you'll already be up around the top 5 and into positive irating territory. Let the wreckers wreck and go about your business in a quieter manner. Theres also just as much skill in picking your battles as there is in actually racing well and finishing high. In rookies and lower splits most of the time you'll force people off just by getting big in their mirrors, they'll 9 times out of 10 be mirror watching and make a mistake so you dont even have to try to force a move. Study where they are slow, study where they are erratic and plan the next lap.

Don't go for wins, go for top 5s and low incidents. Once your in C license leave Mazda Global behind and never return to it. Stick with Skips as soon as you can, while there are still lemons here like everywhere, ppl are more cautious as open wheels usually mean race over from colliding. Plot your way around, even if you gain small irating or small safety rating that's a success and on your way to better things.

Thanks, will give it a go.

Good plan, thanks

Great stuff - thanks

I have realised now that the NASCAR and sprint races I was doing are actually unofficial - so don't count towards your safety rating - maybe that is why thee was so many idiots out there!

Had a couple of decent races today in the MX5. Think I'm quite enjoying iRacing so far, yes there are idiots but most are easily dispatched with careful driving at the start, its those morons who road rage and wildly block and run you off the track who seem to be the biggest issue for me, its disappointing to see that attitude but not unexpected.

Oh and as suggested earlier I purchased the BMW M6 GTE and Skippy in anticipation of making it out of Rookie. Will get tracks and further cars as and when required.

Another race in Skippy and finished 3rd after Qually 10th. My lap times are poor, but I seem to be more consistent in a full race. I had an amazing lap 6 laps and held a guy behind so was happy with that as well

Unofficial races and week 13 tend to have the most chaos. Due to there being no SR punishment people lose all respect of racing and absolutely gun it everywhere. I'm "Ryan Fisher" if you want to add me :)

For those of you that are newer, this site is worth checking out: https://www.irbg.net/Home/Compare

You can use it to compare what tracks each series has in common, helps to make things a little less expensive at the beginning. For example I've compared BMW 12.0 Challenge and the Skippy https://www.irbg.net/Home/Duplicate/2733,2730,

Great stuff. It gets better once you leave the rookies and the free cars behind. It attracts all sorts of wrong driving unfortunately as anyone can hop in the free stuff.

My run of crash free races comes to an end, got rear suspension damage from seb vettle just driving across the track after a spin. Tried my best to avoid but he just caught me.

On a separate note, what seat/stand recommendation do people have?
