iRacing

Been getting into sim racing lately, mostly F1 2019, but looking at other options. How does iRacing work? Is it all racing against other people or is there offline too?

Its main strength is its multiplayer, but it does have a growing catalogue of AI racing now as long as you have the cars and tracks.

You basically pay a monthly subscription, that gives you a few free cars and a few free circuits to start with. You start out with a rookie license which only allows you to race in rookie series. Each series consists of many weeks where the circuit rotates to a new one every week. You have two key stats, Irating and Safety Rating. Irating you gain by finishing well in a race which is calculated on the strength of field in your race and what car number you are based on your irating. Races are separated on splits linked to irating. If 100 people sign up for a race where only 10 grid places are available, you get 10 splits where you'll race against ppl with similar irating to you.

You then have Safety Rating which is calculated on a scoring system during the race. You get incident points for going off track (1x) for losing control (2x) and for colliding with another car (4x). The lower incidents you get in the race the more safety rating you achieve. Once you get above a certain safety rating in the license, you get promoted to the next license (Rookie, D, C, B, A etc etc) when you get to the higher licenses you then can race in better cars in better series against generally better races.

There are also time trials for all the circuits and all the cars you own. You can practice, test, tune and race AI till your heart is content

I'm really not too impressed with this.

I just got x8 for hitting two cars that I did not hit, a couple of cars were jumping about all over the screen ( I assume some sort of connection issue from their end)

Very unfair and not sure this is for me - especially as they charge lot for it.

Is this a regular occurrence, anyone know?

I bought the M8, had a quick go around Brands, smashed into every barrier in site. Will give it some more time of the weekend now, gonna race skippa this eve and tomorrow eve.

I really need to get a new cockpit though, using the clutch as a brake on the G29 is killing my heavy braking ability as i can't modulate it enough :-(

You could look at swapping the pedals around physically. At the very least maybe swap the spring and rubber from brake pedal to the clutch pedal.

I've installed the GTEYE mod on mine an it's really easy to swap things around.

No it's not a regular occurrence. If its netcode issues usually you'll get a 0x from a collision. You can record the replay and send to iracing teaming it bothers you that much. It just boils down to giving more room

Thanks buddy, just in this case the car was physically not there for about 4 seconds each time and then boom - I get a penalty - I mean seriously!

Finally got into the 2.10.xxx on Virginia International, also picked up a 3rd place. Would have had an incident free race had someone not outbraked themselves and went over the top of me LOL

I got the M8 too; I had some laps around Laguna Seca and I was easing into improved lap times pretty quickly.
Same for me with the pedals, think I will look at replacing the hard rubber piece on the middle pedal with something more squashy. There are plenty of YouTube videos on mods.

I will be looking at which tracks are worth buying to cover the Skip and BMW race series.

Thanks, that's a great overview of it.

The force of the pedal isnt my issue, unfortunately its my gaming chair/stand. It sits bang in the middle of the pedals :(

Got my promotion to D Licence today, had a few sessions today in the Skippy. VIR... What a genuinely horrible track, I have never been a fan of it at all in the past. Its just a track that I've never been able to get a rhythm going on, struggling to break beyond the 2.13's.
The Skippy dosnt help, skippy by name skippy by nature, WOT GRIP? dont get me wrong I quite enjoy having this thing on the edge of grip through medium/fast corners. but its having my pants down particularly when it comes to consistency, especially under braking.

Skippy has great grip. You can throw it in everywhere, get it sideways and come out laughing most times. Are you using the base setup?

yeah base setup, only had a few sessions with it dont want to start ******* with things before I get a handle on the car. I think I described my issues wrong, it definitely has decent lateral grip at speed, but I'm finding a lot of understeer and very little front end at lower speeds, find myself on the outside edges of corners dipping wheels on the dirt quite often, it is quite deceptive.
Lets face it, its a very light single seater with extremely primitive aero. Theres nothing wrong with the car its just a little unfamiliar to me. I'm sure with more track time I'll get to grips with it. I just prefer a car balanced more on the nose, more initial turn in and pedal it out of the corner, but it dosnt seem to respond the way I want it to, at least not consistantly, there are fleeting moments of greatness, I just need to find the sweet spot.

Managed to get my D license for road, to go with the oval D I got the other day.

Now looking at what to buy, if I buy the Skippy car - I see it costs 11.95 - what about the tracks, are there many of these I will need to buy for the Skippy racing?

Congrats.
So yeah I didnt check the full series, I plan to just buy tracks when and where necessary, that way I'll eventually have most of them.
This round is Virginia International Raceway which you will need to purchase if you havnt already.
