As someone who's a noob in this space..

What did hamas hope to achieve by this? Or am I in error by implying that they even think in this way?

Is it just a bunch of savages who don't care about what happens in any way? Or have they made some ridiculous error of judgement?

I swaying to the former as surely the outcome of what they have done is what is unfolding?

I was wondering the same thing. What makes people so blind to the repercussions of their actions? Religion? Hatred? Revenge? Brainwashing?

Perhaps the true Puppet Master has yet to reveal themselves.

Do you really think they will try to limit civilian casualties? They don't have much of a record for doing that.

Also, I wonder if they will ever leave. They might just throw the remaining Palestinians out.
Again the old "Israel does not want to limit civilian casualties" thing. Given their overwhelming military superiority and material, do you really think that the death toll could not be higher if they chose? At this point in time, they have no interest in taking over the state of Gaza...just eradicating the terrorist scum who run it. Hopefully gaza improves under the next government.

They want to get civilians killed and then drag in other Arab nations into a massive conflict with Israel.

Any other terrorist sympathizers that want to join it?
who are these terrorist sympathizers you are referring to? i've not seen a single post in here condoning what Hamas has done and i'm sure if there were the mods would have dealt with it pretty quickly.
calling someone a terrorist sympathizer because they want verification of an absolutely horrific story that's emerging is beyond childish, it's downright shameful.

That's the only other thing I could think of. Sacrifice civilians on both sides and drag other sympathetic states in along with probably the US and get a nice bloody west/middle east conflict going

The plan seems rather inadequate, given the lack of unity among Arab nations regarding Hamas. Some may grow weary of the individuals drawn to such a mindset, and this lack of cohesion poses a potential threat to stable government wherever groups like Hamas exist.

Huh? Give your head a wobble... no one is blaming the individual soldiers doing the strikes, its quite obvious, people are saying they want the Israeli armed forces as a whole to try and minimise civilian casualties... Your statement above is just argumentative at best.
And they will try to minimise civilian casualties as they have always done. However, this time it will not be at the expense of the lives of Israeli soldiers. Any idea of proportion has now been thrown out of the window. Go see what happened in Afghanistan post 9/11.
Israel has a mission. Destroy Hamas and it's terror network of tunnels. Within those parameters, they will try to minimise civilian casualties but not at the expense of Israeli soldiers.

Hamas should know that there will not be any negotiation...Israel is overthrowing Hamas and despite lip service, have essentially written off the hostages. They will attempt rescue where they can but are operating under the assumption that they are all dead.

This is interesting if true, read the 'exit poll' section under 'Conduct'. Hamas won the election mainly on a platform of battling corruption (I suppose fanatics are more likely to stick to holy rules that brand such behaviour as immoral and people are desperate when corruption is rife).

Exit poll from the election in 2006:

Support for a Peace Agreement with Israel: 79.5% in support; 15.5% in opposition

Should Hamas change its policies regarding Israel: Yes – 75.2%; No – 24.8%

Under Hamas corruption will decrease: Yes – 78.1%; No – 21.9%

Under Hamas internal security will improve: Yes – 67.8%; No – 32.2%

Hamas government priorities: 1) Combatting corruption; 2) Ending security chaos; 3) Solving poverty/unemployment

Support for Hamas' impact on the national interest: Positive – 66.7%; Negative - 28.5%

Support for a national unity government?: Yes – 81.4%; no – 18.6%

Rejection of Fatah's decision not to join a national unity government: Yes – 72.5%; No – 27.5%

Satisfaction with election results: 64.2% satisfied; 35.8% dissatisfied[36]

Also, most Palestinians in Gaza did not support Hamas' terrorist aims (despite electing them) and wanted them to change and recognise Israel's right to exist and to engage in a peaceful and cooperative manner:

Unfortunately Hamas then did a military coup and removed their opposition, but it is illegal and immoral to punish people collectively, particularly when they have no means to correct the mistake:

Do they think it through though? ISIS was very succesful in fuelling terrorism across the world, and even though thousands have died since then, the problem hasn't gone away.

The lack of reaction from Arab governments will annoy certain hardliners, though how Hamas or whoever goaded them into doing this gains from that I can't tell.

You'd have to be very special to think any of the countries in the middle east could stop or even be a road bump for the us military

Us held back in the war on terrorism.

It could level most of the middle east bringing it to the stone age without having breaking aa sweat

I'm not discriminating between beheaded babies, murdered babies and children who were burned to death.

Likewise, I am not looking for a magic threshold of 40 before I determine the perpetrators were murdering scum.

I'm just saying we need to be careful about spreading false information.

I've been reading this article and watching the video of the IDF General talking about the discovery of bodies of families, including children, being butchered in an Isis way.

I'm not sure of the specific story of 40 babies killed in one act. But going around doing similar damage to entire families makes it more likely that something as already happened.

The line of depravity was already crossed before we heard about babies.

Children found ‘butchered’ in Israeli kibbutz, IDF says, as horror of Hamas’ attacks near border begins to emerge

I can only assume that Hamas did their attack in order to want Israel to retaliate so hard that other Muslim countries join the fight. They don't seem to care of the price that other people living in Gaza as to pay.

Doesn't Hamas realise China has Muslims in concentration camps and no Muslim country is retaliating, some are making economic deals with China.

It's all **** really.
That's all it is.
You have these terrorist factions and retaliatory actions killing countless innocents.

I'd have more sympathy for Israels actions of it wasn't indiscriminate targeting.

I'd love to just say "leave them to it" but I'm guessing the vast majority are just normal people wanting to get on with thier lives.

Does a terrorist believe they are a terrorist.
That's always the question.

I imagine in 1946 when the Irgun blew up the British Embassy who were stopping the illegal migration onto Palestinian land when it was British controlled never saw themselves as terrorists.

They had confrontations with but we're later Integrated into the IDF (after they assassinated a UN Peace Envoy).

It's a very, very complex region and difficult to identify any party without blood on their hands.
