This is a lot more nuanced than I'd expected. I thought Israel would ask them to leave Gaza entirely, but they're only asking for a relocation to the south of the territory.
Where would they go if told to leave Gaza? And where will they go from Gaza City? The casualties from starvation and disease will greatly outweigh those from military action

Very difficult to find words for this.

Where would they go if told to leave Gaza?

Well exactly, there's no where else to go. Israel won't let them in, and Egypt won't let them in, so it would have been an unreasonable request.

And where will they go from Gaza City?

Khan Younis, a Palestinian city 25km from Gaza City. Or they could retreat to Rafah, which is even further south.

The casualties from starvation and disease will greatly outweigh those from military action

Agreed.

Hamas has already replied that the leaflet message to get out of Gaza city was "fake propaganda" designed to "sow confusion". They've urged Gazans to ignore the leaflet evacuation message.

Imo - it would be safer for Gaza city ppl to follow the evacuation notice.

Obviously Hamas need their shield and more of their own dead helps the propaganda and recruiting. Extremely ruthless. I think that's what has been forgotten in the West after a few very soft generations. Life is a lot harder in most of the world and people there are very pragmatic. The West will eventually be subsumed by tougher people's.

I think Israel will be happy with that, then it can occupy half of Gaza and use it as a defensive barrierf they take complete control of the area, thuld cre
The north has lots of open space, so perhaps once it's under full control, they could use the area to set up temporary humanitarian facilities.

Then, as they move towards Gaza city there would be somewhere for civilians to evacuate to.

I really hope innocent Palestinians heed the warning and are able to evacuate to safer areas. Do many of them even have transport?

As the UN have said it would be a humanitarian disaster there is nowhere for them to go that has food and shelter to offer for anything like that number of people. It might be different if Isreal allowed humanitarian aid into a safe zone to set up camps etc but just asking a million people to up sticks and leave in a country under siege is a nonsense.

I doubt they have much fuel left even if they do.
It would be coupled with damaged infrastructure it's a pretty much impossible task.

Do have to consider that the longer the warning, the longer Hamas have to prepare if they don't go to the South themselves.

As ever it will be the innocents that will suffer the most.

Sky news:
''The United Nations has said is it "impossible" for Palestinians to move to the south of Gaza in the next 24 hours, after citizens were ordered to evacuate by Israel's military.

Israel's military issued the evacuation order, in its strongest hint yet that it prepares to launch a ground offensive almost a week after Hamas's surprise assault.

UN officials in Gaza "were informed by their liaison officers in the Israeli military that the entire population of Gaza north of Wadi Gaza should relocate to southern Gaza within the next 24 hours," UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement in New York.

"This amounts to approximately 1.1 million people," he added, or nearly half of Gaza's 2.3 million population.

Mr Dujarric said the UN "considers it impossible for such a movement to take place without devastating humanitarian consequences".

It came after the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said "this evacuation is for your own safety", but in response, Hamas has called the warning "fake propaganda" and urged Palestinians "not to fall for it".

The UN has appealed for the order to be rescinded to avoid "what could transform what is already a tragedy into a calamitous situation".

ridiculous evacuation demand sounds like a 21st century final solution being imposed by Israelis
Israeli representative on r4 couldn't answer how hospitalized/injured could be evacuated

Their warning message played on R4 seemed blackly reminscent of two tribes song;

What should Israel do then? People posting in criticism should add what they would do instead.

Israel has to eliminate Hamas; anything less would not be tolerated. If the same thing happened to any other country, they wouldn't tolerate it either.

It's so easy to post general vague comments about the people of Gaza and their plight, and on a human level yes it's all terrible, but specifically and tactically, what should Israel do?

Yup, very good at playing the victims, when a few days ago they were going in to families homes and executing them, or worse.

This ******** over in London is concerning as well, with Schools being closed. Places that children attend, let's not forget.

I know there will be lots of innocent people involved there but if you harbour terrorists then you have it coming.

And with these "celebrations" across Europe. We in the West are tolerant but I think that tolerance is starting to become abused.

Through my life and my professional career I look at a lot of information and talk to and assess a lot of people from all walks of life, the Jewish I deal with are always courteous and polite, family orientated people who look after their community and conduct themselves well.

I cannot say the same for the other lot, so my comments are very much based on what I have learned first hand and not led by what I have seen on the news or on "twitter".

They're damned if they do, and damned if they don't really.
