Hi all, and apologies for jumping in. I happened to run into this post searching for XCade as I found out that their site is currently no longer working and I was (surprisingly?) referring their cabinets to a colleague today at lunch time.
For disclosure, I have zero affiliation to Ronald or XCade other than having gone through a similar story but with mine eventually having had a happy ending, so I thought I'd write here in hopes that it can give some hope to people, specifically
@Zatoichi.uK and
@Chelski77 who are still in a process there at least, but others as well. My experience matches parts of what others describe (
@b4gm4n with the father passing away).
Also, you don't need to believe me per se, but if it helps I'm a contributor and active member (well, not so much of a poster on the forums these days) over at the RetroPie project with the same username, and you can find pictures of my cabinet if you search there - a U24S with XPlates. I can also share the link here if it helps, though - unsure about cross-posting guidelines and such. I went through my email history to get a sense of the timeline in terms of months, in hope it sheds some light - and maybe can also match with what others went through.
I started engaging with Ronald via email and phone back in May 2017, though I only ended up effectively making the purchase in August. I was exploring options for a cabinet, which then turned into having a custom panel made (button layouts and such), and also custom artwork designed for the XPlates. The exchanges were somewhat on time, he did offer to sell me some equipment (joysticks, etc) at a smaller price than the ArcadeWorld counterparts as he claimed to have contacts with the same suppliers or something. I bit it and ordered Sanwa joysticks and buttons from him, plus speakers and an amplifier kit. Somewhat convulted back and forths - partially because of my lack of experience with a cabinet project - but all in well it was sorted in a few weeks. In my case, though, maybe because of exchange rates and such (I am not from the UK), he encouraged me to transfer money over via Revolut, which I had never heard of, and for which I ended up signing up a bit hesitantly. I think he even offered a very small discount if I did it via Revolut though I can't promise that that's accurate (it was a year and a half ago). I did have the bank details in the invoice as well, and probably the same phone number everyone has as well. I paid him early August 2017, and he did comment that there would perhaps be a small delay in building the cabinet, which was fine by me as I was also still designing the artwork with a friend.
After that, when I finished the artwork and sent it over (mid-to-end of September, I believe), and then that was kind of it. He didn't reply to emails or phone calls, and only late October did he get back to me saying he had been ill, but he then sent me some 3D renders shortly after of the cabinet with the artwork. I was... reluctantly satisfied, but still wondering whether I'd been had. Two weeks of silence once again, not answering the phone nor replying to emails. The second week of November he replied back, stating that he had been ill again, but that his French supplier had received the parts I had ordered (they were ordered from Asia, apparently), so he was going to receive them shortly, and the XPlates were being produced.
Silence once again, then early December he claims that only one of the boxes with parts arrived, asks for a few more days. Silence once again. I'm seriously wondering whether I'm just being scammed at this point. On the third week of December Ronald claims they're about to cut the XPlates. I don't know what I'm expecting anymore.
Silence once again until January this year. Beginning of January we replies, apparently some issues with cutting the XPlates for the special run (maybe because of the custom control panel layout?). Eventually it shipped on January 11th via some shady (at least to me) shipment tracking thing that for 2 weeks kept sending me empty updates and dates changing - first it was meant to arrive on the 16th, and then every day something changed.
It all finally arrived on the 25th of January - which I didn't think would really happen, I'll be honest.
There were some small issues (mixed up joysticks and one issue with the plexiglass from the control panel). He acknowledged them, said I could keep the incorrect joysticks, and that he'd send me mine which had been left behind.
Once again, long periods of silence, no replies, no phone calls answered. At this stage, after going through the whole cabinet thing, I honestly couldn't care much about the joysticks or the small thing with the plexiglass, honestly. Silence until March, some personal issues on his end but he said he'd ship me the joysticks, then silence again. April comes, and personal issues - he now mentions that he was having some issues with his supplier as well, that he won't be able to get me a few parts I had ordered and that he will refund me for those.
Silence until end of May - an email that ended up in my spam folder! - where he writes "Apologies for the delayed reply, my father passed away about 6 weeks back and had to travel to Chile where he was at the time to sort out paperwork, I have no idea yet when I'm returning to the UK
".
Early June he returns, replies back, and ships the joysticks.
End of June I finally receive the joysticks as well as a replacement plexiglass, and he thanks me for the patience, that once again he's having personal issues on his side but that he's glad that everything went well, and asks me to send him pictures of the cab. I send it to him, and that's the last I hear from him.
So, long story short - it took me almost a year to get it all done. Honestly, 7 months until I received the cabinet, that was the main one.
I don't think he would have needed to make up a story about his dad passing away, especially when I was only waiting on some joysticks to replace the ones he shipped incorrectly.
Also, on his last email, he still comments on personal issues on his side. I did notice the site changing throughout my "journey", so I actually considered that it had just been a scam front site, but I did receive mine in the end - in fact, that is why I was referring XCade to my colleague today, though the site is now down. I sent him to ArcadeWorld though.
The stock on ArcadeWorld was traditionally low on some models, and probably what that suggests is that Ronald was just trying to make it all work on his own, fulfilling orders from several suppliers while doing his own direct cabinet business as well. It probably ran into some troubles somewhere down the line, either personal or business-related - the reason I went for XCade was, as
@Zatoichi.uK mentions, that I was under the impression that they had been around for a while and I think someone had said good things about them.
I don't know, as I never heard from him nor have I met him. I know that at one point I reached out via WhatsApp as his mobile showed a contact there, and I could trace whether he was receiving messages and reading them or not (unlike emails). He never replied to me via WhatsApp, though, only email, and as I search through my conversation history there he no longer has a picture on his profile there, so maybe he deleted his account? Unsure, but worth a shot for those in the process.
I really wish I could help further, but if he is fulfilling some orders, I wouldn't fully lose faith. I want to believe that he's trying to fulfill whatever he can, at the rate he can. Sure, that doesn't help us in any way, but that was at least what my experience with him suggests me. Then, once again, I may be the exception, not the rule, so make of it what you will. But if the dates for the father passing away match, and then personal issues later, sure I can imagine a divorce taking place or him going to France. I don't know.
Happy to answer any questions here or via DM (does this have DMs?), but ultimately I hope that all of you eventually get your cabinets.
Best.
