I've been had... (Xcade)

Looks like I might have also brought a ticket to this party unfortunately. I purchased and received my B24c XCADE cab from arcadeworld which is great BUT still waiting (6 weeks now) for my XPLATES from Ronald!. I got the artwork custom made by Retropimpz who passed the artwork to Ronald and he even send me the Rendered images. ... but that’s all I’ve received. Anyone had any more luck with contacting him or ideas where I might get Some alternative artwork ??
Try these guys.

https://www.rockstarprint.co.uk/

It's vinyl but decent quality and they seem to cater to custom sizes so should be okay for the B24C.

Ok thanks, I’ll contact them. Totally gutted about the xplates though. I have contacted Retropimpz and he mentioned that he had been contacted by Ronald a couple of weeks ago about some work..

I know someone that did actually receive xplates only a few weeks ago which just confuses things even more. He's clearly fulfilling some orders but how he arrives at which I've no idea.

Hi all, and apologies for jumping in. I happened to run into this post searching for XCade as I found out that their site is currently no longer working and I was (surprisingly?) referring their cabinets to a colleague today at lunch time.

For disclosure, I have zero affiliation to Ronald or XCade other than having gone through a similar story but with mine eventually having had a happy ending, so I thought I'd write here in hopes that it can give some hope to people, specifically @Zatoichi.uK and @Chelski77 who are still in a process there at least, but others as well. My experience matches parts of what others describe (@b4gm4n with the father passing away).

Also, you don't need to believe me per se, but if it helps I'm a contributor and active member (well, not so much of a poster on the forums these days) over at the RetroPie project with the same username, and you can find pictures of my cabinet if you search there - a U24S with XPlates. I can also share the link here if it helps, though - unsure about cross-posting guidelines and such. I went through my email history to get a sense of the timeline in terms of months, in hope it sheds some light - and maybe can also match with what others went through.

I started engaging with Ronald via email and phone back in May 2017, though I only ended up effectively making the purchase in August. I was exploring options for a cabinet, which then turned into having a custom panel made (button layouts and such), and also custom artwork designed for the XPlates. The exchanges were somewhat on time, he did offer to sell me some equipment (joysticks, etc) at a smaller price than the ArcadeWorld counterparts as he claimed to have contacts with the same suppliers or something. I bit it and ordered Sanwa joysticks and buttons from him, plus speakers and an amplifier kit. Somewhat convulted back and forths - partially because of my lack of experience with a cabinet project - but all in well it was sorted in a few weeks. In my case, though, maybe because of exchange rates and such (I am not from the UK), he encouraged me to transfer money over via Revolut, which I had never heard of, and for which I ended up signing up a bit hesitantly. I think he even offered a very small discount if I did it via Revolut though I can't promise that that's accurate (it was a year and a half ago). I did have the bank details in the invoice as well, and probably the same phone number everyone has as well. I paid him early August 2017, and he did comment that there would perhaps be a small delay in building the cabinet, which was fine by me as I was also still designing the artwork with a friend.

After that, when I finished the artwork and sent it over (mid-to-end of September, I believe), and then that was kind of it. He didn't reply to emails or phone calls, and only late October did he get back to me saying he had been ill, but he then sent me some 3D renders shortly after of the cabinet with the artwork. I was... reluctantly satisfied, but still wondering whether I'd been had. Two weeks of silence once again, not answering the phone nor replying to emails. The second week of November he replied back, stating that he had been ill again, but that his French supplier had received the parts I had ordered (they were ordered from Asia, apparently), so he was going to receive them shortly, and the XPlates were being produced.

Silence once again, then early December he claims that only one of the boxes with parts arrived, asks for a few more days. Silence once again. I'm seriously wondering whether I'm just being scammed at this point. On the third week of December Ronald claims they're about to cut the XPlates. I don't know what I'm expecting anymore.

Silence once again until January this year. Beginning of January we replies, apparently some issues with cutting the XPlates for the special run (maybe because of the custom control panel layout?). Eventually it shipped on January 11th via some shady (at least to me) shipment tracking thing that for 2 weeks kept sending me empty updates and dates changing - first it was meant to arrive on the 16th, and then every day something changed.

It all finally arrived on the 25th of January - which I didn't think would really happen, I'll be honest.

There were some small issues (mixed up joysticks and one issue with the plexiglass from the control panel). He acknowledged them, said I could keep the incorrect joysticks, and that he'd send me mine which had been left behind.

Once again, long periods of silence, no replies, no phone calls answered. At this stage, after going through the whole cabinet thing, I honestly couldn't care much about the joysticks or the small thing with the plexiglass, honestly. Silence until March, some personal issues on his end but he said he'd ship me the joysticks, then silence again. April comes, and personal issues - he now mentions that he was having some issues with his supplier as well, that he won't be able to get me a few parts I had ordered and that he will refund me for those.

Silence until end of May - an email that ended up in my spam folder! - where he writes "Apologies for the delayed reply, my father passed away about 6 weeks back and had to travel to Chile where he was at the time to sort out paperwork, I have no idea yet when I'm returning to the UK :-(".

Early June he returns, replies back, and ships the joysticks.

End of June I finally receive the joysticks as well as a replacement plexiglass, and he thanks me for the patience, that once again he's having personal issues on his side but that he's glad that everything went well, and asks me to send him pictures of the cab. I send it to him, and that's the last I hear from him.

So, long story short - it took me almost a year to get it all done. Honestly, 7 months until I received the cabinet, that was the main one.

I don't think he would have needed to make up a story about his dad passing away, especially when I was only waiting on some joysticks to replace the ones he shipped incorrectly.

Also, on his last email, he still comments on personal issues on his side. I did notice the site changing throughout my "journey", so I actually considered that it had just been a scam front site, but I did receive mine in the end - in fact, that is why I was referring XCade to my colleague today, though the site is now down. I sent him to ArcadeWorld though.

The stock on ArcadeWorld was traditionally low on some models, and probably what that suggests is that Ronald was just trying to make it all work on his own, fulfilling orders from several suppliers while doing his own direct cabinet business as well. It probably ran into some troubles somewhere down the line, either personal or business-related - the reason I went for XCade was, as @Zatoichi.uK mentions, that I was under the impression that they had been around for a while and I think someone had said good things about them.

I don't know, as I never heard from him nor have I met him. I know that at one point I reached out via WhatsApp as his mobile showed a contact there, and I could trace whether he was receiving messages and reading them or not (unlike emails). He never replied to me via WhatsApp, though, only email, and as I search through my conversation history there he no longer has a picture on his profile there, so maybe he deleted his account? Unsure, but worth a shot for those in the process.

I really wish I could help further, but if he is fulfilling some orders, I wouldn't fully lose faith. I want to believe that he's trying to fulfill whatever he can, at the rate he can. Sure, that doesn't help us in any way, but that was at least what my experience with him suggests me. Then, once again, I may be the exception, not the rule, so make of it what you will. But if the dates for the father passing away match, and then personal issues later, sure I can imagine a divorce taking place or him going to France. I don't know.

Happy to answer any questions here or via DM (does this have DMs?), but ultimately I hope that all of you eventually get your cabinets.

Best.

He's been back in contact with me... I don't want to jinx it, but he's back in the workshop he says... back from an unexpected trip to the Netherlands dealing with more paperwork over is fathers passing... so I've been told, he did say three weeks before that he was going to ship my cabinet... but he emailed me yesterday... he even said he was going to send over pictures of my xplate art... if that happens I tell you I'm posting screen-shots of them here also out of sheer surprise... I don't want to be mean, perhaps life gets in the way, I don't think he's on the diddle... but If I don't get my ruddy cab then I'm going to do nothing what so ever and bitch perpetually on as many forums as my fingers can find me... no not really, another dose of self-loathing and confusion... oh well, we shall see, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks for the post @pjft that again all sounds very familiar. I placed my order after those dates so why he was taking on more work I don't know. I've been back and forth so many times on whether he's out to con and I don't think he is. He gives out way more info that he would need to during communications if it was a simple take your money and run deal. With his personal issues I expect it's probably genuine and yes I feel for him, but that doesn't excuse leaving people out in the cold with no idea what is going on. As I mentioned before, there are some people, well one in particular that is struggling to run a small business due to a large order he placed that went unfulfilled which is unacceptable.

@b4gm4n

That's good news and maybe it will eventually see the light of day. I'm not sure what to expect with my order now. Keep us updated though.

@b4gm4n Fingers crossed indeed. Keep us posted, for sure. Looking forward to (hopefully) seeing it work out!

@Zatoichi.uK Fully agreed. I imagine that the best description can be that he's not especially reliable in terms of throughput, communication and managing expectations. Whether it's lack of competence, biting more than he can chew, or just somewhere between naivety, too much optimism or bad luck, it remains to be seen but I hope you all get your cabinets.

You guys have just reminded me.. :D I need to buy some retro gaming sticker bomb vinyl for a little project I am currently working on. Any recommendations? I have used Rockstarprint in the past and they are decent and pretty cheap. Just looking for some alternatives...

Maybe try this dude : https://www.harumancustoms.com - This chap was going to be my backup If Mr Xcade was to fly the coup... he does artwork you see, good luck.

Jumping into the forum as this is now the first link that pops up in Google when searching for Xcade. Originally I purchased a cabinet from Haruman (degenatron based) but I was looking for something with a little better fit and finish and that's when I found Xcade.

I happened to be looking around and stumbled across a video from a Youtuber named Simply Austin for a contest from Xcade ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1ha6L9bS6g ) posted in April of 2017. The video claimed that they would be giving away 7 cabinets, and even if you didn't win you would still get a 20% off you could use. Since I happen to be a graphic designer I thought that sounded fantastic, so I pulled several all nighters making illustrations based off the templates they had provided. At the last minute I got the artwork completed and sent over, the website had claimed they would be making 3d renders of everyone's artwork and announcing the winner on a specific date. The date came and went with no updates to the website or anywhere else. In the mean time I had used my detective work to find their Facebook page, etc. and found several other people asking for updates and wondering what was going on. Several weeks later they responded on Facebook and then eventually their website that they were having computer troubles so the renders were taking longer than anticipated. They promised renders within a few weeks, and said Simply Austin would no longer be judging the art and they would do it all internally. Even though they had posted the contest announcement in the blog section of their website they posted the update announcement and following announcements on the homepage of their site (deleting whatever was their previously forever so good luck to anyone who wanted an update).

Weeks upon weeks went by with absolutely no updates and then eventually the store section on their website stopped working, so at this point I began to question if they had gone out of business. At this point the Facebook and other social accounts were also deleted. Occasionally I would check their website for giggles since honestly even though I was/am ****** off with the depth of their ineptitude for running a business (is it honestly that hard to post proper updates on social media about delays and other events when they come up) I still believe the product has a higher level of finish than anything else out there would buy it if I could.

Sometime towards the end of January 2018 I randomly went to check the Xcade website and they had updated the homepage announcing the contest winners (I wonder if any of the people who "won" were ever notified). Shortly after the entire website was mostly disabled. I shot them an email for kicks in May 2018 asking if they were still in business and got a speed reply, he said they shut down the website because it was too much work and that they were only selling to existing customers although they would be back within a few months with their entire stock as currently back order doesn't work for most people due tot he current waiting time of 4~6 weeks. He did however offer the B19C-N with or without XPLATES that could be shipped within a few days, and referenced Andy Senior from Retro Pimpz if I was looking for any design work.

After this I was waiting and checking their website or ArcadeworldUK for more stock on the cabinets and eventually they posted a limited number (like 4 total) of pre-built star wars cabinets for over £1,000 each and then shortly after this their website was deleted completely and I couldn't find a single mention of Xcade anywhere. I also decided to join the Retro Pimpz Facebook group to see if he had any information on whether or not Xcade was still in business and never received a reply, but he has since posted a cover image on his Facebook saying closed (guess he went out of business along with Xcade?).

From what I can gather they just switched to only supplying cabs to specific suppliers. Arcade Evolution being one and Planet Arcade in France (I think) being another. With Ronald in France and the Xcade name in the mud I expect that continuing to only supply cabs is dead in the water. As above, he says he has had personal issues but it's difficult to separate fact from fantasy given so many others have had issues too. It's been people buying directly, suppliers like Arcadeworld and Xtreme hardware, people providing artwork and enterering competitions that have all had similar issues. Mosly with a complete lack of communications for people that put their trust in them and paid up front or gave up their time.

Hi guys, Andy Senior here. I just thought I would clear a few things up regarding 'Retro Pimpz' and my affiliation with 'Xcade'. Both are two very different entities, one is a company that builds/sells Arcade Cabinets (Xcade) and the other is a Freelance Designer with a history of Custom Retro Consoles & Graphic Design (Retro Pimpz).

After building my own Xcade B19MT and designing the artwork for it, I agreed to take on a few jobs for Xcade and things snowballed from there. I was even lucky enough to land the job of designing all the cabs and internal panels for the BTGO Mobile Arcade Van, if you haven't seen that thing yet check it out, its amazing!

So, I have nothing to do with Xcade apart from doing jobs for them, just like I have many other companies. I have recently decided to put my Freelance work (Retro Pimpz) on hold for a while and this is due to having lots of other things going on now. It isn't because Xcade have "gone out of business". Retro Pimpz existed long before Xcade came along and is not reliant upon, or tied in with Xcade.

I can't really speak for Xcade or explain their situation but I will say this, it's been a pleasure working for them, they've never let me down and more importantly for you guys waiting for cabs.... in all the time I've done jobs for Xcade I've never heard of a customer not getting the cabs that I've designed for.

Hope you guys that are waiting get your cabs soon. I know what it's like, I had to wait a while for mine too!

Regards
Andy (Retro Pimpz)

Well bugger me... I asked for a snapshot of my xplate-artwork - he sent me a picture! ... and here it is as promised, maybe next week I'm told for my cabinet, we shall see, but it looks good to me, would be a long overdue xmas present for me hopefully, I'll keep you posted.

Hi Guys,

I read all of these posts with relief.
I went through the exact same thing over a period of about 4-5 months this year.

Constant excuse after excuse to the point it got weird.
I got my design done and paid for with Retro Pimpz who were great and very professional to deals with.

Ronald although seems like a good guy is quick to take your money but thats when everything falls silent.

I had every excuse under the sun.

Air traffic control strikes / Stuck in France
Can't obtain the MDF / apparently it's a nightmare sourcing materials in this country / Weird excuses about cutting the Xplates / Printer was too busy / prints are in the que / printer is being serviced / getting divorced / Father's death / PayPal blocking his money / Also complaining about his new business partner who doesn't like payments via PayPal

Just prior to ordering he asked me to do a bank transfer but I refused. Thankfully paid via PayPal and was able to get a full refund of what I paid £850 ish.

Think is I really think his products are great. Have seen them in person and they are solid. You can't treat people / customers like that.

:(

Thankfully paid via PayPal and was able to get a full refund of what I paid £850 ish.

I used PayPal also but because I'm a gullible sod I waited and waited and trusted and waited and then waited a bit more until... the 6 month PayPal refund marker had passed and so... when I tried for a refund 18+ months later PayPal just ignored it, I could fill out their form etc to initiate proceedings but obviously they have their cut off points etc... any way thanks for the video... doesn't look a ripping *******... If he's industrious enough to make that amp or be part of it then he should be able to bung some wood though a CNC machine ( whatever it's called ) and cut me my machine... or failing that a refund, fat chance... he sprinkles his emails with hopeful abandon... then after some weeks the feeling wares off and you feel like a berk again... minus a serious amount of money... I have actually opened up a dialogue with him via email, I have to really... I may try to infuse him for the new-year... new step forward blah blah blah... can't wait for those emails ending with the usual line "will pack & then ship to you! - thanks for your patience!" would be 2 years in February since I made a payment... my fault a little bit as I should have guessed, I said oooh I'm programming my game, it'll give me a chance to iron out the bugs... real-world bugs I just can't program my way out of... anyway I'm rambling now, I'll keep you all posted.

Small claims court is going to be your best bet. As you also have proof of payment and emails/promises it should be a slam dunk. I know its a ballache but its really the only way forward for people like these.
