As I said about a billion pages back, it seems more like he's leaving half a season late than half a season early. He should have been off in the summer. Yes the amount of notice was shady but you got 50 million for him! How much do you think he would have fetched if he'd put in a transfer request at the beginning of January?
After initially being angry that he didn't wait til summer, I'm actually pretty happy that he has gone in january now. The season is getting better , and I think will improve further, but will still ultimately be a poor season. But by Torres going now, it gives us almost half a season to bed in the new frontline, adapt to required changes in playstyle and tactics , and I think that, after some summer signings will put us in a stronger shape for the start of next season than if we had tried to do it all in a summer break.
Said both these before, Liverpool's season is effectively over, they aren't getting champs league, they were always going to get Europa league, with Hodgson, kenny, or if they put Caragher in charge they were going to strengthen in Jan and form was improving. They've got nothing to play for, miss or gain this season, if you bed in a new front line early next season you might have two "crouch" type situations, two guys who can't score for 6 months and screw up next season. Much better to build now and come into next season stronger.
As for the timing, its the same situation as Bruce/Bent. Bent asked for a transfer in summer, there was an offer in Jan, he asked to accept it, then afterwards Bruce starts talking about loyalty, how it was wrong to leave and how he owed the club another 6 months and should have waited till summer.
But he's already waited 6 months, Torres(for anyone not utterly utterly blind) has wanted out since WELL before summer, he was clearly unhappy and out of form, as the team went to crap well before summer. Bent/Torres both left 6 months after they wanted to, not 6 months before they should have for any particularly stupid reason managers come up with.
Fans fall for this rubbish time and time again, players consistantly say they love a club, and kiss the badge, 0.2% of all players mean it, the rest are getting you to buy shirts. Managers want to make the outgoing player look bad and blame them, outgoing players want to make the manager/club look bad and not anger loads of fans who will trash their cars given half the chance.
its all a game, none of it is sincere or real, yet people fall for it and have angry reactions to feigned love of a club, or perceived dishonesty or betrayal.
