January Transfer Window 2010/2011 Season Rumours/Signings

Torres to chelsea was good business in my opinion.

Shame they then ruined it by throwing away £35,000,000 on Andy Carrol. I'd have though he's worth maybe £15m, perhaps £20m with addons but £35m?? no way.

But you quoted me, hence the confusion. I know you City fans can be a bit dense sometimes ;)
Missed the 'continuation of what you said' part then? Dense? :p Maybe the forum should just allow quotes within quotes like everywhere else.

You want proper quotes within quotes like the above you mean? :p

And there's no exciting transfer news from my club this window, in fact all we've done is let a player out on loan to Saint Johnstone. It's a far cry from the Torres transfer I fear.

Oooohh 'ark at her and her fancy quotes !

He would have been criticised whenever he left you know he would have.

I just don't think we know the full story and probably never will, unless she comes out and tells us all.

I should have specified 'sensible fans'.

I have no issue with his reasons for wanting to leave (suprised that Chelsea's his choice of destination though), he was lied to in the past but if you're going to come out and say you love the club so much etc, then he should have shown it in the way he left. There's no excuse for leaving in the way he has.

I agree, he's proper shafted you going to Chelsea.

You love it. It's a bit of a pain doing quotes like that though, much better if the software did it automatically.

I was a bit surprised by what seemed to be the suddenness of it but maybe it was the best way to ensure it went through. It doesn't totally excuse it but if he'd waited for the summer then Chelsea would be more or less unable to offer anywhere near that sum for him would they due to the new regulations? If that's the case then who else would you be looking at to stump up that sort of cash - Man City, Barcelona, Real Madrid? The last one is probably a no go even if they do have the cash to offer as if his word counts for anything he'd not choose to go there ever as an Athletico boy so you're left with possibly two clubs who know they've got a certain amount of bargaining power.

The suddenness was very much the best way to ensure it went through and that's why I'm almost certain that this was planned between Torres and Chelsea.

It doesn't excuse his actions at all though. He's contracted to Liverpool and it should be the clubs decision if, when, to whom and for how much they sell him for.

If Torres were to have waited until the summer and then still thought that it's best to leave, I'm sure the club wouldn't have stood in his way and I'm sure that there would be more than enough interest in him. He would have left and the majority of supporters would have understood.

And considering what's he's said about not playing for another side in England, I wouldn't rule out him moving to Real 1 day either.

It would be interesting to know how hard he tried to leave in the summer, and how much the club stood in his way then (with false/true promises or otherwise).

I still don't think the majority of supporters would have understood though. If he had gone to any other EPL team in any transfer window, as realistically he only would have gone to Chelsea or City, he almost certainly would have been branded a merc and all past ties severed. Maybe the way he's gone now is a blessing in disguise. At least there is a proper reason to dislike him now :p

You're probably well aware that contracts don't work like that in football; if Torres 'paid his dues' and played for Liverpool until his contract expired then the club would have got a big fat nothing when he moved on. It's pretty much assumed in the modern game that a footballer will leave before his contract ends.

Or they could, you know, just sign a new contract.

Because the point was that unless Torres stayed at Anfield until he retired, he was always going to go before the end of his contract and Liverpool are never going to have that any other way because they want a transfer fee.

Well yeah, I was disagreeing with the original sentiment that he should've stuck it out until the last date on the signed page as if he was some kind of contracted engineer on a project. As we both agree, football works differently than that.

It would have been courteous and honorable if he'd stuck it out until the summer and given the club more time to plan. The real problem is the previous owners had used up too much good will with Torres and his patience had run out. I don't really blame him for wanting to leave after the last couple of years we've had at Liverpool. The club have time to rebuild, Torres doesn’t.

The thing I'm slightly annoyed about is his performance this season. He clearly wasn't happy but that's no reason to sulk and slack off. He put in great performance against Chelsea and it's now clear why. The rest of the time he's been next to useless. I can’t see that happening for the second half of the season.

So who was the Spurs fan convinced we were all nuts believing Spurs ridiculous bids and theres been no confirmation.

Redknapp has confirmed they bid for Aguero 38.5mil, Rossi 35mil(both club records), Forlan 13mil, the stories about are that Liverpool offered 10-12mil and got rejected, and Redknapp says with minutes to go they offered 6-6.5mil for Adams and only two chairmen didn't manage to sign in time, while earlier reports were simply that Spurs bid higher than liverpool and were also rejected. Those are all confirmed, though the Adam's bid amount is in question.

Theres also reports suggesting they tried to bid for a few other strikers aswell. So right from the horses mouth Redknapp confirms the quite ridiculous nature of their bidding and the fact they failed with every bid, and the fact it makes them look rather desparate and daft, also for most people confirms the fact that Redknapp doesn't care for the financial stability of the club, is utterly insane and addicted to signing new players.
