January Transfer Window 2010/2011 Season Rumours/Signings

Gary Neville has just been stopped going into Old Trafford with a bag.

The security guard asked him what was in the bag and Neville told him there was a hand grenade, a shotgun and some semtex.

The security guard said "thank God for that, I thought you had bought your ****ing boots"

Gary Neville was out on the town in Manchester last night celebrating his retirement with his Man United team mates. He was absolutely rat faced.

Moyes should really let it go at this point.

I could understand his persistence if it was some over-the-line Materazzi-esque insult, but as silly as Fabregas would have been to have said it (or not) he wouldn't have been saying anything that you wouldn't hear out of any plebian conversation about referee blunders lasting longer than five minutes.

He's saying he's replied only because Wenger suggested he didn't hear anything(he never said that) only said Moyes didn't see him say anything to the ref.

Moyes is now saying, oh, he didn't say it too the ref, but he might have said it to the 4th official, yup, because "how much did you pay the ref?" still makes more sense said to a 4th official than another player.

But the main story this week isn't everyone under Everton getting better, and strengthening their teams while Everton lost yet again, the story is Cesc, thats what Moyes clearly wanted and thats what he got.

I think Liverpool were quite shrewd and basically said Chelsea, we can't get our replacement (Carroll) for a sensible price, they are taking the urine, so if if you want Torres you are going to have to make up the difference. Any less than £15m net for Torres-Carroll would have left a nasty taste in the mouths of many scousers I fear.

Looks like you might have been right about this. Our owner gave an interview to the Guardian where he's said that the club decided that they wanted £15m + Carroll (who he claims was the number 1 target for the summer) to replace Torres and therefore Newcastle's valuation on Carroll determined everything.

I suspect this may simply be a way of justifying paying £35m on Carroll (i.e. the club valued Carroll at £15m less than Torres). I have no doubt that had we signed Carroll for £25m, we'd have still pushed Chelsea for the full £50m.

Anyone see Nolan getting stick for saying Carroll had joined a "great club"?

All he did was wish his mate the best and some geordies proceeded to get their knickers in a twist because of it.

Unlike all other football fans who are completely level headed at all times. ;)

Wishing a player well is fair enough. Saying you're 'delighted' he got his move is a but much IMO.

Ah come on, I even anticipated that you'd think I was slagging you all by putting "some". We don't always have to be out to get you, you know ;).

I dunno, no disrespect to you lot, but Liverpool are a bigger club, and the fact he's not just gone there as a bit part player, but as their new number nine, is pretty special for him. Especially considering the bumper new pay rise he'll be tucking in to.

Yeah, got the impression Nolan was talking as Carroll's friend rather than co-worker, I can understand why he's happy for his friend, it's might be Carroll's biggest ever move.

Carroll seems to be getting quite a bit of 'stick' from the media regarding the pricetag... being quizzed on it, articles about how Torres is outselling him 250x in shirt sales etc.

The thing that would worry me is when he comes back from injury it could take him (like many players) a while to get back up to speed. Suppose he doesn't score on his first three starts for Liverpool, and misses a couple of sitters. The knives will be out before he's even had a proper chance to prove himself, simply due to the pricetag.

It's not his fault Liverpool were daft enough to spend that much money on him.

He just needs to try his best and hope that things come off for him.

Regarding Torres it got me thinking has a player ever left Liverpool and gone onto bigger and better things?

Much like united it seems there's very few players that have wanted to leave us and then gone on to have more success than the club elsewhere. Even Ronaldo arguably our most high profile case of a player in their prime wanting to leave hasn't gone on and done anything since.

Just wonder if Torres will end up regretting leaving, that and Chelsea's last big money striker despite his reputation flopped massively

Maybe it's just wishful thinking....

Remember how much stick Andy Cole got when he couldn't score for ages?

I think a high pricetag is inevitably going to invite criticism. Which is a shame.

Q: Why does Cantona always wear his collar up?
A: To hide the marks from where he's been carrying coal all season.

This might be of interest to a few: http://paddypower.com/popup/torres-caroll-freebet.html
If you are the betting type this could be a good deal, even if you haven't already got 9.Torres/Carroll on your shirt, depending on prices etc it might be worth getting it added so you can send the shirt in.

-Brad Friedel (at least won something after leaving Liverpool and along with Given has been the best keeper in the league for the past decade)
-Javier Mascherano almost certainly will (won absolutely jack excrement at Liverpool, whereas Barcelona are looking in with a shout of winning something)
-Steve McManaman (blew his Liverpool career out of the water - multiple league titles, multiple champions league victories - Liverpool didn't give him even one of either of those)
-David James (rightly or wrongly established himself as England #1, at Liverpool all he won was the League Cup, at least he won the FA Cup with Pompey)

Obviously just thinking of players from the Premiership era here, no doubt they are many more cases from history and others I've forgotten about.

Good examples but they didn't go for massive money.

I understand what you're saying and I agree Liverpool are a bigger club etc. but I think all football fans would react in the same way.

It's easier to look at the situation objectively and decide who's in the right and who's in the wrong but for the fans involved it's a different story.

If it was Arsenal fans getting annoyed I'd probably say the same things you've said.
