January Transfer Window 2010/2011 Season Rumours/Signings

True but there was no mention of money in the question posed.
Also as a rule Liverpool rarely sell players for massive fees - if you don't consider Mascherano's £22m fee massive, that means Torres and Alonso are the only ones :)

Going back a few days.

I didn't think we'd pull off either of these signings so fair play to the purse string holder & decision makers.
They're exactly what the squad needs right now, quality, desire & their best years to come (hopefully) + it gave the opportunity to loan out a couple of youngsters in preparation for next season.
It gave the current 1st teamers a visible kick up the arse too going by the Sunderland game, that was long overdue.

-Brad Friedel (at least won something after leaving Liverpool and along with Given has been the best keeper in the league for the past decade)
-Javier Mascherano almost certainly will (won absolutely jack excrement at Liverpool, whereas Barcelona are looking in with a shout of winning something)
-Steve McManaman (blew his Liverpool career out of the water - multiple league titles, multiple champions league victories - Liverpool didn't give him even one of either of those)
-David James (rightly or wrongly established himself as England #1, at Liverpool all he won was the League Cup, at least he won the FA Cup with Pompey)

Obviously just thinking of players from the Premiership era here, no doubt they are many more cases from history and others I've forgotten about.

I bet he enjoys life being on their bench 24/7, bad move for him in reality, i'd rather play week in week out than win trophies on the bench.

This is truly cringe worthy what was he thinking , Oh and chelsea have done an exact copy of the torres banner that was in block 109 in anfield .
Phil thompson was great on sky sports new tonight he was very diplomatic and was wondering how will 2 out and out strikers work together . Basically he was wondering which one of chelsea's strikers is gonna do the donkey work for the other .

McManaman was the only one I could think of tbh. I'd argue the other three though, James & Friedel although they've gone on to be very good players they've never got a move to another club the size of Liverpool and as for Mascherano he's not getting a game at Barcelona is he? I reckon 1 more season there and he'll move on again - hardly a success.

I'm happy to put Mascherano on the back burner until we see how it pans out but Friedel and James definitely did better after leaving Liverpool. Not only did they win more/better trophies, they also rebuilt their reputations (both got a lot of flack at Liverpool), one became one of the best keepers of the noughties, the other earning over 50 England caps.

In terms of judging players by whether they've had a move to a 'club the size of Liverpool' I think that's a flawed mentality, firstly because they never won anything of note at such a 'massive' club (heck Liverpool have never won the league during their careers, never mind when they were at the club) and secondly because the club you are contracted isn't necessarily the sole factor that controls 'bigger and better things'. If it is then surely we shouldn't be sticking the boot into Mascherano for being on the bench at Barcelona, a club of at least equal 'size'.... why would staying at Liverpool to be a bench keeper potentially playing 0 league minutes a season have been bigger and better things than going and winning trophies with other clubs?

He's made 14 appearances in the League so far, 4 less then Messi.

Considering he's almost "back up" to possibly the best midfield of this generation, that's not bad so far :)

Some of you make it sound that Brad and james went on to win league and cup doubles after they left liverpool. One thing that i don't doubt is that liverpool is on borrowed time and if they don't win any major trophies soon, thier history will stop being a factor when going after players.

James only got those England caps because Seaman retired. He's not improved as a keeper since leaving Liverpool. Agree about Friedel though, he was shocking for us though.

I suspect the point Tom was making is that no player has left Liverpool against the clubs wishes and gone on to be successful. McManaman is the only player that I can think of that has been successful so far.

2x champs league Finals, Fa-Cup Final, League Cup Final etc in the last 7 or so years. History aye.

Highly debatable about Friedel being the best goalkeeper (ie just because some g/k's have been around less than 10 years in the EPL doesnt mean they are worse; Chech, VDS, Reina - even Howard is probably equal)

Actually VDS joined Fulham in 2001 - so he is easily better overall

Friedel is a great gk - but he isnt THAT good

Reason for my post - surprised to see McManaman didnt win anything at all at Liverpool before his move to spain

You mancs wouldn't know but he is been liked to rat for many reason, top player, horrible person.

What makes Neville a "horrible person"? The fact that he cares about the club he plays for? He has been a total professional for his entire career, trained hard and got the rewards for it. His personality is obviously a bit abrasive to rival fans but he hardly went round leaving his foot in tackles and causing problems off the pitch.

Can agree with this to an extent, he shows huge passion which maybe someone like Torres could learn from, mind you giving the finger to opposing fans isn't the best role model for kids.

United going after David de Gea from ATELTICO MADRID in the summer. I really hope we don't have to through 20 keepers to find the right one like last time. :/

Nah, he must be horrible, forget what all the people who might know him or have played with or against him and what they might say. Some genius on a computer forum thinks he's horrible.

Seriously, all this Torres hate is getting boring now. im a die hard pool fan and still feel sick inside that he has gone - but we are simply not good enough, are not in the champions league and wont be next season. why is that so hard to understand? Appreciate what he did for the club rather than constantly berating him for trying to better his career. We got £50m smackers for him - it is a great deal for a club in our position with a player who doesnt want to be there. And due to his sale we are stronger up front

Regarding GN, i completely agree the guy absolutely loves united, is so passionate about them and would do anything for them - great if you support the team. What i dont agree is with his attitude, being PFA representive and all, and setting a bad example trying to incite problems on and off the pitch with rival fans. As a well respected footballer and representative he should be setting a good example - he even admits on the SSN interview he can let his heart rule his head - not always the best combination. He wears his heart on his sleeve and his passion is commendable - would be interesting to see if he goes into management
