Is Lucas better, did your expectations change, or has the rest of the team who before Lucas left the work to Mascherano/Alonso, now make up for Lucas and help make him look good.

It's surprising how the same player can be viewed entirely differently by an entire fanbase of players over a couple years when they've played the same way the whole time.

It's actually a very good point and I go back to my comparison of Lucas v Fletcher that I made a month or so back...

Fletcher as a young player was built up as an attacking midfielder/replacement for Beckham/next Gerrard.... that soon was obviously not the case and he became cannon fodder for the boo boys (around the time of Roy Keane's infamous MUTV rant).... as the years went by though it became clear what Fletcher was very good at - being a work horse.... then everyone started appreciating him for what he does a lot more. That didn't suddenly make him outstanding though it just meant that the majority started understanding his role in the team, what he brought and how he helped those more talented around him and it wasn't until when he wasn't around you noticed it even more

I've got very little doubt Lucas has improved over the years though as IIRC he was bought around the same age Anderson was when we signed him so 18/19 but then any sort progression is kinda expected (it is arguable that we haven't seen that progression ourselves with Anderson but that's another matter)

Before this gets into a generic Liverpool thread and peeps get frowned at...Lucas is an exceptional athlete and one that could have in my mind been an outstanding attacking midfielder. Quick examples of his passing range - Fulham last year when we destroyed them with 5 goals and Arsenal this year for one of the goals - the crisp one touch football was rather enjoyable. The only thing he lacks is goals. Then again that’s not his job, he is the metronome as it were, making the side tick, ala Deschamps for France back in the day.

And, yes we have thrown 100 mill at the attacking side of the team, net spend is irrelevant….we're not is the Rafa days of having to sell to buy. I believe we have scored 2 less goals this season as opposed to last year and 6 months of Woy's wonders....depressing.

Personally I'd never call Reina an outstanding footballer, he's a bloody good keeper though. I'd never call Vidic and outstanding footballer either, but I would say he's one of the best defenders in the world, if by that definition it's your opinion that makes them both outstanding footballers then fair enough either way though Lucas doesn't fall into the same argument anyway (he's certainly no where near the class of your example Makelele)

As I said, I disagree with you on both points.

Lucas is a regular for Brazil now and probably our best player for the past season and a half. He took time to get to his level, but he is a completely different player to the one we bought. The main change is that he now reads the game well and has confidence in his abilities. The result of this is excellent defensive positioning, high quality tackling and great dispersion of the ball. Some serious bulking up hasn't hurt either. When he arrived the defensive side was simply not part of his game but he adapted to suit the requirements of the manager.

Anyway, enough on the pool, sounds like Bily has gone for buttons

Bily fee will rise to just under €7m with appearances. Base price is around €5m I think. Not a lot but still.

thats a massive loss. i thought he was good just didn't get a good enough run in the team.
admittidly, he was never going to be another kanchelskis but he had a cracking shot on him. seeya billy, good luck.

cerci is not that good.

but the way the economy is going oil wont dry up before the majority of people cant afford to buy replica shirts any more

(not suggesting your fans are any different to any other fans - was just a general comment) :):(

Hopefully the bubble will burst for all fans sooner or later, prices are a bit silly at the moment.

Everton paid £250k upfront to the champions, with another £250k payment due on the 31st May. If the Blues somehow qualify for the Europa League, they will have to pay an additional £100k.

Gibson signed a four-and-a-half-year contract worth £30k per week, with an increment of £1k each year.

Hahahahahaha :D

All joking aside, that's a bargain, he isn't that bad. He just wasn't good enough to play regularly for united, so he never had a chance to develop out on the pitch.

450k... I'd say that's a steal.

I agree, he was out of contract in the summer though and generally Fergie tries to do right by the players he tells have no future at the club (both Wes Brown and John O'Shea went for lower than their market value)

Hmmm just heard on SSN that PSG have ended all interest in Tevez:p...oh dear looks like Tevez wont be playing football for some time then unless some team comes in from him at the last minute.

send him to us on loan. we'll have him.

£450k for gibson is a steal. if he remains consisitant which i believe a good run in the side and moyes can bring him on.
