Ashley Barnes joins Burnley. Sad to see him go. very genuine player who always gave 100%. Undisclosed, but almost certainly around 750k.

Leeds have completed the signings of Cameron Stewart and Jimmy Kebe on loan. Kebe to the end of the season, Stewart on a 93-day emergency loan apparently.

Any ideas who they will switch their attention to after losing out on Barnes?

Stewart is loan but has signed a 3 1/2 year contract when it ends :)

We are due a big investment so it's nice to bring in these players without spending a penny :D

Someone up front will be the next target I imagine, someone better than Barnes I hope!

I know a lot of Man Utd fans wants a signing, but I believe Moyes has stated that it's going to be tough to buy anybody in January.

I just don't see why any big/star players would want to join Man Utd. At this point they are in transition and Moyes is not covering himself in glory.

IMO it would safer for Man Utd to not buy anybody now. Wait to see how Moyes does till the end of the season. Then release funds to whoever is managing the club next season. If that happens to be Moyes...then so be it. We already have a 1 white elephant (Felliani). I don't want another, especially if Moyes is leaving this Summer.

It's a difficult situation.

The main thing is Moyes. Let's assume the board are in agreement that he'll be given time no matter what, as people have suggested. Getting top 4 is very important and will help attract players as well as show that Moyes is somewhat up to the task. That doesn't look likely at the moment, so as we're only half way through the season, January signings could ensure we get 4th place (or better). This will in turn make summer signings easier.

I think we have to at least get one 'proper' signing this month. There are players out there who would massively improve us that we can get. Yes it might cost a bit more than under ideal conditions but just because it's January doesn't mean it can't be done - that's a load of rubbish. If the club/manager can't identify any of these players and strike a deal for them, that's very worrying indeed.

We're going to need upwards of £100m worth of investment to make this a title challenging side again. Chelsea and Man City aren't going to get any weaker, that's for sure. Might as well start now, unless they regret appointing Moyes...

Fairly accurate assessment and the first person in the media to come out and say what every fan has thought for years.

And Robbie Savage is perfectly placed to know that Man Utd do get rid of players that don't cut it. He was one.

It's a bold statement to come out with, I wonder if he said the same last year when they won the league.

If thats the case it would be hard to back Moyes with a £25m-£30m signing. They could wait till the summer to analyse the manager and the squad to spend again. I think they should at least try to bring 1 top CM to the team as it's badly needed.

Not bad except that Vidic might go in the summer so we'll try and keep the others.

Midfield, well arguably carrick, kagawa and fletcher should all go too. Might need a big chequebook to sort this.

Upfront, Rooney also likely to go. Rvp will be another year slower and less fit too. Ouch.

Yarmalenko links resurfacing today as the Salah deal is dragging on - case of us saying to Basel look we'll go elsewhere if you dont sell with luck.

I won't be surprised if we don't sign anybody this window. We're certainly looking for another attacker, fullback and a midfielder but I'm sensing there's no urgency and we'll only do a deal if the right player is available at the right price.

Totally agree, apart from £100m worth to make it title challanging.

you know as well as I do that as soon as any director/ Chief Exec hears Man Utd are on the phone the price of any player goes up 15%+, and with 1* Centre half (at least), 1* full back and 2 or 3 midfielders (at least one wide player) , that budget isnt going to stretch - I think its closer to £150m.....unless you mean buying youngsters who are yet to fully develop in which case by the time they do we will probably have to replace even more players.....(and I would say 15% was true when it was Gill on the phone, now its Ed Woodward with much less experience at player negotiation, that % will probably rise more)

edit

Its totally unrealistic not to give Moyes significant sums to strengthen - otherwise you arent giving him a fair opportunity to strengthen the glaring holes in SAF's squad that have been obvious /present for some time even without considering those players like Rio/ Vidic and Evra who were fantastic for SAF (for the most part at any rate) but are now just too old to compete at this level.

I did say upwards of £100m. :p But yes, lots of spending to be done! I think we'll end up with new players in the majority of first team (starting 11) positions over the next 8-9 months, at least I hope so.

laughs - ok, so you did, but I think you are still way out :D

It cant be THAT quick (otherwise you start getting into Spurs earlier this season kind of issues), but if he starts this window, then certainly including Jan 2015 then yes I would agree, maybe even to Aug 2015.

edit - any more than 3 or 4 new 1st team players per window and you are asking for trouble imo

In that article, the argument of "this is the squad which won the title last year", is briefly mentioned.

For Ferguson to win the league with this squad last season shows just how special he was.

I guess Fergie really was "that" good.

Personally, I think that Mourinho, could've come in and had Man Utd challenging for the title, with a similar team.

The only hope I hang onto, with regards to Moyes' ability to manage is that so many pundits/experts and people in the know - they all say the same thing - Moyes is the right man for the job and he will get it right.

Jelavic off to Hull then. Bit odd though. Day before a match... And Martinez saying that he had given him something to think about after QPR.

Must be pretty close to what we paid for him.

I agree with this.

HOWEVER, Moyes is suggesting that he is not going to buy any new players, in January.

It is possible that Moyes just isn't the sort of manager who likes buying players. Lets be honest, last Summer was a disaster.

Here is a soundbite, regarding David Gill not being there to over-see player purchases.

Phelan: United would have signed one of the absolute best if Fergie and Gill were still in charge
