January Transfer Window 2013/2014 Season Rumours/Signings/KonoplyankOFF:(

A few places seem to think we're after Cavani. Cavani would be a Rooney replacement and an extremely unrealistic one at that.

How could we get him? PSG don't need money, they don't need to sell him, and Zlatan isn't getting any younger. Makes no sense at all unless there's something weird behind the scenes.

Daily Mail too:

Manchester United will pursue Edinson Cavani in the summer after establishing that his club Paris Saint-Germain would not countenance a sale this month.

Sir Alex Ferguson is understood to have called his former United centre half Laurent Blanc to check on the Uruguay striker's situation and the PSG coach said they would not listen to bids in this window, but would be willing to discuss the possibility at the end of the season.

If Rooney goes you will. I'd much rather keep Rooney and sign some better players elsewhere though. I suspect we've looked at Cavani as an option in case Rooney left, but I'm not sure why - PSG aren't going to sell him, surely.

its the fact he will cost so much money when there are better and cheaper options. Mitroglou cant be too much and has a good goal scoring record.

Headline on the back page of the Telegraph:

United close in on £37m Mata

What the article actually says:

United sources insisted on Monday night that no bid had been made but it is understood that the club do admire Mata and might consider a move.

You've got to love headline writers.

CFC: Hai, can we have Rooney for £35m pls?
MUFC: No, we won't sell to you.

MUFC: Hi can we have Mata for £35m pls?
CFC: Oh hai again, sure you can

Does anyone know if Rooney has the 'force one extra year' clause in his contract?

I hope Moyes takes the stance of "you will rot in the reserves" should he start being a little **** in the summer.

€1.1M loan. €3.5M option to buy.

Not fully convinced from him, but I trust Garcia

Gary Neville on Mata:

That's a lot of money, 37 million quid, but they need a signing. Does he fit with what I would call the typical philosophy of Manchester United? I would say no.

The more Belgians the better I say.

I heard that Maureen will sanction a £40m plus bid from Utd for Mata. He insists that the deal will only go through with a guaranteed buy back of £140m in two years time ;)

Joking aside, good fit for United and I think Gary Neville is right, this will call for a change in Utd formation. Mata to play off the right or left with Adnan on the other side of a front 3 with RVP the traditional CF. Rooney to play behind RVP and two holding midfielders of Carrick and Afroman.

Will the deal go through ?? Very tenuous but I can only see Jose allowing the deal to go through if he can see Mata taking points off the likes of Arsenal, City, Liverpool who Utd still have to play. Chelsea in Theory don't need the money but £40m+ cash would ease some of the pressure from FFP

I thought Mata would be an impossible signing but I think there could be a glimmer of hope. This has all come about very suddenly so there must be some sort of interest. A guy who works for/with the club said on Twitter the other day he'd heard we were preparing a bid, well before this all came about last night.

In favour:

  • With Mata we'd be more likely to take points off Man City and Arsenal, potentially helping Chelsea win the title
  • Chelsea obviously don't see us as a threat this season, and we don't have to play them again
  • A £40m transfer fee and getting his wages off the books would free up money for FFP and a potential summer move for Falcao - which is surely Chelsea's priority and won't come cheap at all
  • Perhaps other clubs haven't shown an interest, only At. Madrid have been linked properly and they have a low budget
  • Mata will be desperate for a move in a World Cup year

Against:

  • Will push for Rooney in exchange and that won't happen
  • Probably still bitter we wouldn't sell them Rooney in the summer
  • Don't ultimately need the money at all
  • Next season Mata could be a threat
  • Wouldn't slot into the team too easily without a change of philosophy from Moyes, to be fair he doesn't have one anyway at the moment
  • PSG or someone more likely suitors

Ultimately though it would be a great signing and would lift the team, interplay between Mata/Kagawa and Janzuaj would be utterly fantastic (replace Kagawa/Adnan for Rooney if necessary), but would mean a step away from wingers - and all our wingers are rubbish anyway.

Still, think it's very unlikely at this point but perhaps not impossible.

Stranger transfers have happened Robbo like Ladyboy going Chelsea in January for £50m but at the time CFC were in the dominant position. Still are to some degree in this situation. They don't need to sell other than for FFP reasons and even then thats not the greatest of reasons to sell him

Cabella transfer looks like it will go through in the summer. No fees mentioned but it will probably be for the sake of a mill when we really need reinforcements.

Frustrating but not particularly shocking.
