January Transfer Window 2013/2014 Season Rumours/Signings/KonoplyankOFF:(

The problem Utd have is that, even if they got Mata sitting in behind a striker, they'd still struggle against better teams to get him the ball. The key midfielders for each of the top teams are able to pick the ball up in the middle of the pitch and drive forward with it, adding a man to the attack and providing service to the other forward players. Mata doesn't do this, he needs service to be able to play.

For me, the big hole for United is in central midfield. Yes, a creative CAM like Mata would be useful. He's a great player and nobody would say not to him. But it's not the heart of the problem in my opinion.

Cabella transfer looks like it will go through in the summer. No fees mentioned but it will probably be for the sake of a mill when we really need reinforcements.

Frustrating but not particularly shocking.

He's not the position we need reinforcements however. He's clearly a Cabaye replacement, what we need this transfer window is a striker and a centre half

*looks back at Fabregas saga* :p

Main difference being Mata desperately wants out, etc. Still don't think Chelsea will sell unless they'd rather have the £40m~. It doesn't seem outside the realms of possibility, where as with Fabregas we were hoping he wanted to leave for some reason and also hoping we'd put in a proper bid.

I agree, he's not what we need most but if top quality players are available, you should always go for them (unless you have better in that position). He'd be a big lift to the team and certainly would provide a creative threat we tend to lack especially without Rooney.

The French press are saying we want Cavani now too and will go back for him in the summer... :|

utd just need a big name for now then get the ball rolling with others and mata would be great it was dumb to not buy ozil but this would make up for it

and Cavani do not want

Mata is a world class player and I would love him at United, but I don't know how or where he would fit into the starting 11 without leaving key players out.

--------- RVP ---------
Januzaj - Rooney - Mata
--- Carrick - Fellaini ---

Kagawa provides rotation for either of the 3 behind RVP. Carrick/Fellaini can rotate with Cleverley and Fletcher.

Mata, a new CM (Vidal etc) and a quality LB/CB would be ideal.

If we bring in Mata, this leaves an opportunity to swap Kagawa for Gundogan in summer?

Mata can actually play quite well out wide can't he, unlike Kagawa? I'm sure I remember seeing him there for Chelsea a few times.

Mata on the left would be a complete waste, he needs to be in the position on the right attacking midfielder where he was last season for Chelsea. That would mean changing formation.

Hence probably why you don't need him and need some center mids.

Why would changing formation/philosophy be a bad thing? Remember, our wingers are all crap. The only person who can play to a high standard out wide for us at the moment is Januzaj and it's not even his favoured position!

Oh it wouldn't, just can't see how your two best players could play in a Chelsea style formation for example. All the Chelsea forwards now just feed on the scraps, their best three players are the ones behind the strikers. You don't really have a Hazard, Oscar threat. You'll no doubt say Kagawa and maybe if he can perform like he did in Germany maybe so. Janujaz and Mata beside him. But would RVP and Rooney play that role well?

Cavani - Do not want.

If there is £40m available then Spend it elsewhere. Watched him a few times and in a realtively weak French league he is consistent at looking nothing more than average. A poor man's Batistuta

The more Belgians the better I say.

Further on from this -

Belgium daily Het Laatste Nieuws delivered quotes from Batshuayi’s parents on Tuesday on the current current status of their son:

To be perfectly honest, we often have the impression that the president is pushing our son to the exit door. Our manager has confirmed to us that Everton have contacted him, because Mr. Duchâtelet was contacted directly by email from Everton about the possibility of a transfer. We have also seen that e-mail.

Since the beginning of the whole affair, we have made repeated attempts to reach [Mr. Duchâtelet] by telephone, but he hasn’t answered our calls.

So Standard's chairman Mr. Duchâtelet has basically gone off the grid in order to stop Batshuayi leaving them!! Incredible. :D

I'm not sure quite how Moyes would want to set up with Mata. It's most likely he'd play wide right, cutting inside, then we can play Adnan on the left.

He's so good that he'd still be quite effective in a David Silva type role, a wide playmaker of sorts. Then we can just have Rooney behind RvP - I'm not sure about Kagawa at the moment, he's not as good as Mata at least. If we've got Mata/Rooney/Januzaj and RvP all up front then our full backs and central midfield can focus more on covering the defence as that lot will be able to carve out chances easily.

Mata wouldn't fix our central midfield or defensive problems at all, but he's a quality player and we need a few of those.

If Chelsea are prepared to sell him to us for £37/40m as is being suggested, then I think we have to go for it. We keep saying we won't panic buy but we could do a lot worse than Mata, and I think we'll be able to fit him in without too much trouble. With him, Rooney and RvP fit we could push into the top four quite comfortably, and it'd likely lift the other players who in reality aren't as bad as they are playing at the moment.

I really don't see us sanctioning a sale of mata to UTD despite league position. If he has to leave (which would be hard to swallow) then I imagine it will be to PSG.

Agree with robbo, that front four (given that RvP actually gets fit sometime soon lol) would be incredible

Wouldnt be surprised to see Carrick and Fletcher being 1st choice until the Summer (unless Fellaini improves dramatically)

With Moreno still not moved, I cant see Coentroa moving to OT in Jan.
