January Transfer Window 21/22

Great signing for villa, coutinho just never suited barca from day one.

He did well on his loan at bayern and the chances he did get at barca he was hardly terrible.

He will easily improve villa squad.

How were Man United not in for Trippier? Miles better than the likes of AWB, can play both sides, good set piece taker etc. !2 million is a steal, cracking signing for Newcastle!

Prob werent willing to pay him 12 million a year to be fair. As for set pieces, i saw a comment about that earlier...i mean is he really?

He scored a free kick for England. I think that automatically makes him an expert.

I'm glad we didn't get him. He's exactly the kind of player we don't need. If we're changing right backs we might as well get a proper improvement rather than a minor upgrade for 12 months.

On current form most are in improvement on AWB.

It would be interesting to know the numbers and structure of the Courinho signing - 100% wage, option to buy, etc

If they're paying full wages with no option to buy there really doesn't seem much point in the transfer imo. Is he going to contribute to such a degree that they'll either finish in the European place or high enough in the league that the additional prize money would cover much of the loan costs?

If they're not paying 100% of wages then that's another matter, but I read last summer about the impact a January signing typically makes upon a team offer the next 4-5 months, and it's a depressingly low number in general.

Unless you buy a Bruno Fernandes, Andrew Cole, Eric Cantona, Nemanja Vidic or Patrice Evra. You do get some decent January transfers at least :p

Seem to be the only Villa fan not convinced by Coutinho. People are getting off over the name, not the player imo. Love to be proven wrong but I could easily see this being a 250k/week mistake.

There's not a chance Villa will be paying his full wage. The report I've just read suggest they'll be covering around 60% of his wages so he's likely to be costing Villa around £120k per week or £3m(ish) for the course of the loan. If Coutinho reproduces even 30% of what he did for Liverpool then Villa will finish several League positions higher than they would without him and that alone will more than pay his wages.

He's a little wizard and in the 18 months before he left us he was performing as well as any Liverpool player has in the past 20 years. He scored or assisted 40 goals in the League and CL from 3707 minutes - a goal or assist just under ever 93 minutes from a non penalty taking attacking midfielder is in****ingsane.

He's somebody Newcastle should have paid OTT for. He has the potential to win games on his own and could have been the player that single-handedly kept them up.

That said, I hope it flops like a wet fish. I'd be so annoyed seeing him do well and we hadn't gone for him.

Those were certainly successful transfers - it's much more difficult to be immediately successful in just a 4-5 month period. It looks like he's not started for almost a month and has had covid recently, so it may also take him a while to get sufficiently match fit. Lots of variables at play.

I'm not saying it's a bad deal, but as no one knows the numbers and contracts involved it's very difficult to say that it's worth it.

Apparently we decided against buying Yoane Wissa at the price quoited in January last year as statistically him arriving only increased our chances of promotion by 1%-2%. Interestingly he scored against Villa last week :P

If Villa are thinking that they are going to get the Liverpool version of Coutinho from 4-5 years ago then I think they will be mistaken. He's still talented but he just isnt the Coutinho of back then. I could be wrong, we will find out over the course of the rest of the season but I'm going to say now that if he scores as many as even half a dozen goals between now and the end of the season I will be surprised. I reckon he will be able to turn the odd loss into a draw or the odd draw into a win, so in that respect he is worth the loan but Villa havent signed THE Coutinho and if I was a Villa fan I would keep my feet on the ground when it comes to expectations.

You can all link back to this post at the end of the season when Coutinho has masterminded 10 goals and been pivotal in Villas success to show just how wrong I was :D

As they were open to a loan with buy option am abit surprised we weren't in for him.

Well I'm gutted actually, I don't belive this wouldn't fit our team now story personally, he would be a great option to have and proven talent we could bring on from the bench

I sense our January will be quite one with no one in at all. I can see Nat Phillips leaving us mind

How am I remotely bitter? Some of your posts make little sense lately Rob.
Are you serious?

Saying you hope someone flops and you’ll be annoyed if he does well because you didn’t get him is the epitome of bitterness.

He’s had a bit of a crap time at Barca, I hope he does well, except against us.

Christ on a bike! It was a joke Rob! I'm going to send you a pm every time I post something not entirely serious so we don't have to keep doing this.

edit: to be crystal clear, you will not find a bigger Coutinho fan on this forum than me. I'd go as far as saying he's quite possibly my favourite Liverpool player in the past 20 years. I would love to see him do well at Villa (as long as he doesn't score vs Liverpool), although a small part of me would cry inside because he wasn't doing it for Liverpool.

I was being lighthearted too but you seemed to totally miss it. I just don’t think you understand my sense of humour.
