Japanese Grand Prix 2010, Suzuka - Race 16/19

How exactly do you think launch control works in a way that makes it different from traction control?

Schumacher makes the best starts? He's never been known as a great starter, good at aiming his car at another off the start but not really a notorious fast starter. He might have done well in 94 and this year but previously he's not been outstanding.

Launch control also operates on the clutch and sets things like the biting point for the start, holds the car on the brakes so everything is preloaded before the lights change (in the case of Renault, for a bit, detected the jump start system switching off and so launched the car without the driver doing anything) and rate of engagement of the clutch along with throttle and ignition control.

The award for mobile roadblock should go to Yamamoto. His lap times were so far off the pace, and the virgin still couldn't get past haha

His fastest lap, but there was 1 point where he was lapping in the high 40s, when everyone ahead was mid to high 30s.

Yamamoto's fastest lap was 0.5s better than Sennas though. Although consistency seems to be his problem as he admittedly finished a lap down on Senna.

What shocked me was that Kovalainen's best lap was over 2 seconds quicker than Trullis! WTF was that about?

dependw when they pitted though some people pitted really late and only had good pace because low fuel + new tyres like kobayashi who had one of the fastest laps of the race ,algueasari was the same

That was how launch control as we came to know it legally worked not how it worked or was said to work on the Benetton. It progressed legally to work as you said but was just a traction control device for the start in the earlier days.

The system they had that detected the lights being switched was awesome. :)

Tell me more about this system please.

The jump start system used an induction loop embedded into the track, which was switched off when the lights changed for the start. Benetton had a system which detected the loss of this current and so launched the car automatically. It was only found out when on board footage showed one of the cars already passed several others on the grid and the driver still had his thumb on the launch button.

Now THAT is genius.

Did any other team develop this system or was it limited to Benetton?

Only Renault, I think they were renault at the time can't remember exactly. Even when the banned it the LC they had was still tasty. Remember all the times it didn't matter where they qualified as long as they were near the front because they would grab places back at the start.

I'm trying to remember exactly. Itv covered the device and I remember Brundle talking about it. As for the exact year I will have to do some digging around tommorow to find the exact year.

I still believe that Vettel will finish ahead of Webber, but we shall have to wait and see.

Looks like Button seems to share my own beliefs regarding Webber vs Vettel.

For RBR's sake, Vettel must finish ahead of Webber. It would make a mockery of the status quo. No.2 beating No.1. Average driver beating MSc's heir apparent. All this despite Vettel getting preferential treatment...this won't go down well with RBR's management or their money men.

I'd say the only problem Kubica has is when there's nothing to be won from a race he'll occasionally just sit back and seem not to care, although he has improved on that this year.
