Just had to punch a bloke in B&Q

Have you not heard the phrase that pedestrians have the right of way?

Anyway, according to the highway code, cars DO NOT have to stop until someone has moved ONTO the crossing. The people who attacked his car were not on the crossing, and in fact, the OP was on it.

I still wouldn't have punched him though.... Thats asking for trouble from the police.

I'm not a violent man - never have been - yet I agree with what was done.

I think the main reason they did this is because they thought they could get away with it.

People go around in groups (chavs, etc) and are destructive, make a nuisance of themselves, etc. because they can and because they know 99% of the time they will get no come back for there actions.

I've been out in town before now and have seen people being pushed and provoked just because the other person knew there would be no come back. Hopefully the stupid prat who thinks its fun to key cars or generally act like a prat will think twice now.

If I was walking across a crossing and someone drove through it I normally mutter something along the lines of **** or **** and then continue on about my day - I don't get my keys out and try and trash someones possessions.

The scarey thing is that if this guy had got away with it I have no doubt he would do it again and have the attitude that hes a hard guy, etc.

I have read the whole thread and it seems impossible to get a clear answer. If somebody did this to me I may have punched them in the face but I like to think I can control my anger. But until it happens to me I cannot say.

What I really don't get is the posts that say: "The country is in such a bad state because people won't stand up for themselves" or "This is why it is such a nany state"

What? Just because some people think that violence is not the naswer means the country is going downhill?

My view point on violence in situations like this can be summed up by the quotes below - but don't mistake this for weakness. If something real close to me like the wife or son was threatened then I would get my Vorpal Keyboard +5 and unleash hell!

An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.

I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.

And to prove that doing nothing at all isn't the right thing to do:

It is better to be violent, if there is violence in our hearts, than to put on the cloak of non-violence to cover impotence. Violence is any day preferable to impotence. There is hope for a violent man to become non-violent. There is no such hope for the impotent.

A big {HUG} for the first person to tell me who I have quoted.

c) I hate people like you. THE LAW STATES THAT YOU SHOULD STOP AT ZEBRA CROSSINGS, you should ALSO always drive AS IF YOU HAVE TO STOP EVEN IF THERE IS NO-ONE THERE YET.

IF the pedestrian is already on the crossing, he has right of way.. otherwise cars DO NOT HAVE TO STOP.

You should check the highway code again..

http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/01.htm
19: Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

Some of the replies in this thread are so naive it worries me. Exactly what world do you people live in? Good on ya dublove. To all you on the moral high ground, well I'm coming to key your cars; I shall expect a verbal rebuke while you attempt to follow me to my car. While I'm at it, I might as well burgle your house too, after all, you're only going to remonstrate with me while I'm doing it. I fear the harsh language.

Because the FIRST ones says he PUNCHED him UNTIL he fell to the floor and the SECOND one says he only punched him twice and the dude fell because he TRIPPED over his own feet

How the fudge can you say they are the same thing ?

This has probably been answered already, but it seems to be quite obvious to me, he punched him UNTIL he went down which happened to be the SECOND time he hit him!

Why are people naive because they say in that situation they would not resort to violence?

Anyway, key my car and I may or may not resport to violence (I would try not to) but if you unlawfully gain access to my house that, in my eyes, classes as a threat to my family and you would recieve full and deadly force to stop you dong so.

Do not mistake some posters attitudes as being naive..

Never been in this type of situation but I did have a close call on a pelican crossing. Stopped for the light it started to flash amber, looked to make sure no one else wanted to cross and started to set off. A kid of about 9 years old bolted up the side of my car and ran across the crossing. I had only moved 1-2 feet and jammed the braked on. IT gave such a huge scare that I followed the kid home and spoke to his mother about it.

never been in any sort of confrontation

Don't know weather or not I would have hit the guy for keying my car as I'm not like that. However if something was going to rile me to the point of hitting someone then it would be a guy keying my car. The guy got what he deserved.

not saying its right what the OP did but.......

i doubt the guy who keyed the car will do it again knowing there are people willing to punch him to floor :p

if the OP had reported the guy to police like people have suggested could you say the same thing ?.

he would have got a slap on the wrists by pc plod and been sent back on his way ready to key any other vehicles that beep theyre horn at him :S

edit- when that kid (mainframe) made a thread about when he keyed someones car the majority said theyd beat him up :p , yet in here people dont agree with the OP

What a lovely thing for people out on a Sunday afternoon to see :/

I can understand lots of shouting etc but to punch the dude to the FLOOR ? nice ... I think you have issues

I would have shouted and expressed my anger but then taken witness names and try and have this man done for criminal damage and then fix my car and get on with life *shrugs*

Don't be suprised if you get arrested for GBH

People in the world will pee you off, get used to it ... you can't go around just punching the crap out of everyone

I agree...although i'd have locked my doors, stuck it in reverse and ran him over tbh.

I've just read most of this thread...

Bit pathetic of the bloke to key your car, but if it was left at that and you followed them and got their reggo and reported them to the police you still would need witnesses. He would still argue that you were driving negligently and without witnesses on your side you would have trouble proving otherwise.

By punching him, you are putting yourself in the wrong too, so basically you can't win :(
