Just had to punch a bloke in B&Q

IF the pedestrian is already on the crossing, he has right of way.. otherwise cars DO NOT HAVE TO STOP.

You should check the highway code again..

http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/01.htm
19: Zebra crossings. Give traffic plenty of time to see you and to stop before you start to cross. Vehicles will need more time when the road is slippery. Remember that traffic does not have to stop until someone has moved onto the crossing. Wait until traffic has stopped from both directions or the road is clear before crossing. Keep looking both ways, and listening, in case a driver or rider has not seen you and attempts to overtake a vehicle that has stopped.

171: Zebra crossings. As you approach a zebra crossing

  • look out for people waiting to cross and be ready to slow down or stop to let them cross
  • you MUST give way when someone has moved onto a crossing
  • allow more time for stopping on wet or icy roads
  • do not wave people across; this could be dangerous if another vehicle is approaching
  • be aware of pedestrians approaching from the side of the crossing.

Should be considered.

In my opinion though, there was no need to punch the guy, as others have said, you can't go around in life punching everyone who annoys you!

You should have stopped when you saw him - yes he's an ass for not waiting - thats how crossings work after all, you apporach and wait - the cars see you are waiting to cross and stop.

Walking across without stopping is wrong and you could face charges yourself (not the driver) if you did this on a public highway.

But you did see him, and in time to honk the horn, and driving at only 5mph - you could have stopped couldn't you? Maybe wave them across if they suddenly jump and realise there's a car there?

But you decided to be rude and honk your horn and drive past them. He decided to raise the stakes and be even dafter by chasuing after you and keying your car.

You then raised the stakes further by getting out and lamping him.

You were wrong not for hitting him, but for being rude and not letting them pass, everything after that was just silly boys in the playground.

But what if you're (the driver) already ON the crossing, BEFORE the pedestrian (that although you checked for one, you couldn't see) steps onto the X-ing...? Well it's simple... the pedestrian should wait for the next car that stops because there is no way they were on the X-ing before the driver.

All it takes is a little common sense, if a car is ON the crossing, you should wait for it to go past before you start to cross. I don't see how you find this ambiguous when it's clear the pedestrian was in the wrong. (Judging by the OP's OP.)

I agree about the punching.

We can only go by what you originally post mate and your first post did say you punched him in the face until he hit the ground which to me conjures up an image of you punching the crap outta him until he collapsed on the floor and then you later post than you only punched him twice ..

If you want honest opinions you have to be truthful first of all and not be all hardman about it all ;)

he said punched him to the floor rather than had a fight, so i thought 1 or 2 punches till he was on his rear end.

Well said, Telescopi. I lot of car drivers go round with the attitude that they own the road and often act rude towards pedestrians and cyclists.

I often have car drivers at juntions cut the corner and nearly take me off my bike. They then have the nerve to give me dirty looks/the bird/some verbal before driving off - not giving me time to respond!

...everything after that was just silly boys in the playground.

Yes. I have seen kids at the school I work at act far more grown up.

I was walking outside B&Q today and was reminded of this thread. I started telling my girlfriend about the incident and guess what happened?

Yes that's right, I see a guy and his young son walking out of B&Q pushing a heavy trolley only to be nearly hit down by someone in a black sports car. The guy can't have been going very fast with the trolley as it looked really heavy so I'm guessing it was a case of billy big balls in the car.

No keying, or punching occured. The guy pushing the trolley shouted at the driver and maybe slammed his hand onto the car bonnet. I'm thinking B&Q should do something about this as it seems like a common event.

Well done OP, good to see you sorted the **** out, I perosnally would have slammed my car into reverse but hey!

As for the people saying he should have given way to the pedestrian, this is true if the car is fairly far back and has time to see anyone waiting to cross, however if the car is already on the crossing and someone just appears then they should give way to the car, as the car can't stop. If I'm driving through a high street at 30mph and get half way across a crossing and someone ran out from nowhere then they're either going to be dead or in hospital.

Wow 13 pages.

Ok firstly are the crossings on private car parks even enforcable, as i was under the impression they are not

Anyhow the op was already on the crossing the pedestrian should take care when comnig onto the crossing, and not just run out in front of the car, luckily the car was traveling at 5mph or the guy could have had more than a sore face.

Then the op gives him a beep of the horn to warn him to be more careful next time, the guy takes offence and keys his car, he deserved the punch in the face might teach him to not be such an **** next time, as for the people saying report him etc etc the chances of anything happening or him getting any money is about 5% and not worth the hassle.

Well done op. :)

14 for those of us on slow connections.......

Massive PPT settings can make a page crawl to a stop loading up everything, so I leave mine on the 30, thank you very much.

It has nothing to do with manliness, much more to do with bandwidth!! :D

Well I spose that is a disadvantage of living in the middle of nowhere.

Yup, the closest cable connection is 5 miles away, as is the closest natural gas pipeline.

Same thing with the closest fire brigade, the closest ambulance is even further. Law enforcement is next door to the ambulance, etc....

Needless to say, we're pretty much on our own when it comes to a lot of things. :(
