"Just stop oil"

The only realistic way to stop the sort of protests that cause huge economic damage to the country and have potentially devastating personal consequences at an individual member of the public's level is to have a consequence of doing it that is totally unpalatable.

Given the courts are backlogged and the prisons are at capacity, added to a police force who would seemingly be in fear of a raucous kindergarten I think corporal punishment needs to be brought back. Those countries that employ it suffer next to no disruption, and little minor crime, sexual assaults are extremely rare, and petty theft all but wiped out. A good birching quells even the toughest, and would deter all but the craziest.

But we demonize those that enjoy a calm existence thanks to taking on their criminals In effective and robust manners whilst our own country sinks to higher and higher levels of open displays against the law and authority. The future is bleak. Government are weak, police, the legal profession and the courts often politicised by liberal agendas.

The other option is to just ignore them. Let them climb on the gantries, they’ll get cold, bored and move on their own.

They only do it because it’s disruptive and it’s only disruptive because the police close the roads to try and get rid of them. It’s not disruptive if you just let the traffic flow underneath as normal.

Do you understand what fertilises most of these crops?

Not sure that being funny makes what I'm saying suddenly not important. NASA have predicted crop reductions of 24% for maize and 17% drop in wheat by 2030. That is not funny in any way, that is starvation on a scale that makes Ethiopia in the 80s look trivial. I'm very happy to have my assertions countered, but do it by reasoned argument please.

EDIT: If jpaul below is right, then please accept apologies if I got the wrong end of the stick. Even so, no amount of fertiliser will work if there is no water!

like the albanians fleeing to the uk who them grow their specialty crops inside houses with the use of slave labour

Really - I suggest you move away from the Daily Mail. On one hand we have the Brexit supporting boss of Next saying we need more immigrants and then we have 2000+ young fit Albanians (source BBC), mostly men arriving with most just wanting to work. It's almost like there is a solution here, not a problem.

Think he was talking about ammonia nitrate ? based fertilizers that need a lot of gas to produce and were Russias big export - now 4x their pre-war price.

The consequences of not dealing with climate change are far, far worse than 8 hours stuck in a traffic jam.

I'm really not sure which totalitarian, corporal punishing state you are holding up here as a nirvana - give us a clue of "who" is getting it right?

It's what they want to work AT that worries me:

In 2022 there were 1,336 Albanians imprisoned in England and Wales, the highest foreign nationality in that year.

Climate change is beyond control unless a Draconian drive to reduce the global population level is undertaken, I have no doubt that is going to be unpalatable to you.

An example of low crime rates due to the use of harsh punishments is the United Arab Emirates.

I always think that if you commit a crime in a foreign country you should be shipped back at that countries discretion. Quite why we should have to foot the bill for anyone who is not a UK national when they commit a crime is beyond me. Living in another country is a privilege, not a right. Part of that contract is that you abide by their rules and laws. Break them enough and you lose that right.

Climate change is NOT beyond control. We can't stop it - that ship has sailed - but we can mitigate it. I agree that it becomes an easier problem with a lower human population. But hey, if we do nothing, population decrease will happen! Maybe a bit late, but it will happen in it's millions.

UAE - Arbitrary detention, no right to freedom of expression, homosexuality punishable by death. THAT is your model for crime and punishment. Are you serious?

Some of these people aren't well mentally IMO and it seems like they're being exploited by this group - both tweets get embedded but I'm referring to the second one here with the old lady:

^^^ she's a bit slow/losing her marbles... can barely speak a full sentence without pausing mid-flow.

Likewise the second one here, this one seems to be acting like the world is going to turn into some sort of post-apocalyptic nightmare within just a few years from global warning and little baby billy can get to watch this video and see his aunt tried to stop it:

This one has a breakdown almost right from the beginning of the video:

As a civilisation we aren't going to do anything about it until the affects are having a direct and serious impact to those higher up the ladder anyhow - look at stuff like COVID, etc. pretty much everything so far is just being seen to do something about it. By which time it will be far too late as any attempts to tackle it will be playing catch up to something with huge momentum.

Meanwhile the up coming generations have it hung over their heads, much of the obligation leant on them to do something about it and the ones most affected by it while they can see those before them have done little of real substance, if not contributed to the problem happening.

On a more general note I'm noticing an increasing amount of "accelerationism" at work these days - hiding behind the moral high ground or other noble positions to justify or foster on society ideologies, changes, rules, etc. which directly make the problem worse in the short term, under the guise of tackling the problem, as a means to try and bring forward radical changes and/or to penalise those they see as the "enemy". I believe similar thinking is behind some of these recent protests as well.

They all need to be in a mental hospital so easily brainwashed.

It's at times like this when these wazzocks are detained awaiting trial I find the snail like progress and dysfunctionality of the English judicial system welcome :)

Isabel Rock, tell your relatives to stop breeding, the planet needs a rest.... :)

Who was betting many of these in the media for their illegailities are "artists"? I think you're probably right. I would wager there's not a decent days work between the lot of `em.

I only skimmed through as I find this stuff too pitiful to watch - but IMO a lot of it is limited life experiences, limited perspectives rather than necessarily mental illness.

Again I've only dipped into bits of it but IMO that Louise Harris stuff felt coached to me rather than coming from the heart.

After watching some of the utter drivel that Roger Hallam has been blathering about, it would seem that some of them are reading the same script.
Recently he was talking about food shortages and people breaking into homes and raping the mothers and daughters and poking peoples eyes out with sticks.
Luckily he’s banged up for a bit in Wandsworth.
But it’s not a cult, definitely not a cult.

Edit found the clip...

yea becayse they want to keep wages low.. lets pay a wage no one can actually afford to live on and keep people in poverty....

I agree with you. The current system is far, far from perfect. Capitalism relies on exploitation, for one person to get rich, they have to make someone else poor. Anyway, this is derailing the thread.

Suffice to say, more oil/gas licences which will not produce any output for 10 years is *NOT* the answer we need on a planet being destroyed by global warming. Renewables, storage and reduction of energy use is the only sensible path.
