"Just stop oil"

I’ve heard this so many times, but it’s never directly, it’s always “my friends friend friend” or some other cop out. No one can ever provide concrete proof of it being a real thing.
Well to be fair, I did say its an anecdote so I'm sure it will be dismissed, so not really a surprise to see it dismissed.

All I can do is say what she said to me, theres not much I can do to prove it. I could get her to sit in front of a camera and record her saying it but that wouldnt be proof either, nothing I can do about it. Somewhat unsurprisingly she doesnt post on here so I cant get her to post it directly and again, even if I did it could just as easily be dismissed as a made up post. So all I can do is post what she said and trust that people have enough trust to not just immediately assume that I/her are lying.

I mean what concrete proof do you want me to provide, anything I provide can easily be dismissed as made up

Well its only an anecdote, so I'm sure it will be easily dismissed but my neice is at Bristol University and during the BLM thing she (and some of her friends) were approached by a company who essentially do hire-a-protestor, and offered £150 to attend a weekend protest/march.

Obviously thats not JSO, its a different protest, but it does go to show that there are companies out there that do it, especially in terms of university students who a) usually have a need for the dosh and b) are already predisposed to be anti-government (and particularly anti-tory government)..makes them prime targets for those sorts of companies.

No more than an anecdote and may have other explanations but my dad once got talking to a protestor when they were out near where he was at a conference (they were actually targetting Bill Gates IIRC) and asking about what they were protesting and the guy was like "I dunno I was paid to be here". Could have just been he didn't want to talk about it, etc. though.

I would begin questioning your niece because I think she is telling you lies is what I am saying.

I don't think you'd believe it if someone did have concrete proof anyhow.

EDIT: I'll see if I can find it but there was an exposé awhile back on a Russian group who were attempting to infiltrate white supremacy groups and protest movements in the US and Europe who were paying people to protest - for example https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/oct/17/russian-troll-factory-activists-protests-us-election (in this case providing funding but still).

There is a world of difference between funding domestic terrorism and protest groups to people walking up to random university students and offering them £150 to protest.

Man, I dont think I'd want to be a relative of yours. I get that someone should never automatically think they are always being told the truth by a family member but simply assuming that a family member is lying to you is just as bad.

Why would I question her? I'm not Starsky and Hutch. Ultimately it makes no difference to my life if what she said is true or not but I'm certainly a more trusting person than to interrogate my niece as to whether she is lying or not. My relationship with my family members outweighs accusing a family member of being a liar.

Even if I was so inclined, what proof that she offered would constitute concrete proof for you? I mean some people are so firm in their own belief that no amount of proof is enough to dissuade them and they always have a reason to dismiss all proof to the contrary (Flat Earthers are a prime example of that sort of person)

They’ve been quoted as saying their future is going to be ruined..

Well, it is now.
Enjoy the showers boys

Good there is just a whole wave of self entitled idiots who think they can do anything and yes their lives are ruined but they should have thought about that before they did it. Imagine all the jobs they will try and apply for with a criminal history. I doubt they will be popular in prison either as so many people were effected by it.

Good news. Hope they packed their soap-on-a-rope.

Generally, I think prison ought to be primarily for violent offenses but with these people, it's not someone making a mistake, it's some very self-righteous people who are in complete denial that what they did was even wrong... so community service, fines etc.. aren't necessarily going to work well and as they caused traffic chaos/wasted time for over half a million people for a couple of days thanks to their little stunt then it doesn't seem all that unfair that they now have their time wasted with a couple of years in jail.

Also prevents them from taking part in further disruption an might make others think twice about it too.

I don't think, even given our porous prisons, that there will be that many internees who were affected by the Stop Oil protest as they drove about in their arrow suits.... :)

Such a smug arrogant face. These sentences should be the norm, except most of the others have got small fines, which is disgusting. The dispicable girls who threw bakebeans at a Van Gough masterpiece and destroyed the valuable frame and could have destroyed the painting got a suspended sentence (ie nothing if no re-offending) and 2 weeks inside. I'd give them both 7 years but the judges don't want to enforce the law against the upper classes entitled kids.

I’m not defending what they did but the reality is that they can’t send anyone to prison for lower level offences because they are full.

the choice is literally put these two in prison and let two potentially violent offenders out or give them an alternative punishment which is usually limited.

The birch was effective and both cost little to administer and kept a cell free for more worthy miscreants. And anyone who has had it administered with proper vigour rarely goes about leaving themselves open for some more. I can imagine the smugness disappearing from the above bint's face when she's told to lie face down and bite on a tooth protector ;)
