Over there...
Recently purchased a load of 35w equivalent Philips warm white gu10 bulbs from The big river. Being a former sceptic, having tried No name (but expensive) gu10 bulbs and finding them too small a spread, and too harsh, at £8 for a two pack my hopes weren't that high.in terms of light quality they aren't discernable to a halogen, warm, not too bright with a decent spread.

Heartily recommend them. The 50w alternatives are a fair bit brighter than halogen though.

I have just bought some 5w GU10 LED bulbs.....

Was surprised how hot they get, then realised that they must have a transformer of some sort included.....is this right and do others get hot?

Thanks

I use 3w MR16's off the bay pretty much throughout my house. I have hacked all the drivers too to enable me to dim them from a PWM signal too :)

yeah you are right, they are converting 240V AC down to around 10-20V DC - depending on how efficient the switch mode drivers in them are, they will get hot.

G4 LEDs

Replaced most bulbs with LEDs and very happy with them, the only ones I'm having trouble finding is 10w equivalent halogen G4 bulbs, from what I can gather they would be about 1.5w in LED terms. I need 6 of them for a ceiling light fitting so would need to be AC and the bulbs sit in a horizontal position so need to spread the light rather than being focused straight out.

The problem I seem to be having is that reviews of these bulbs in various places including 'the rainforest website' are very mixed. People reporting bulbs that buzz, some that flicker (assume they bought DC bulbs) and some that are very dim.

Is anyone able to point me in the direction of some good ones that aren't going to cause me problems? Also I would be looking for them to be of the 'warm light' variety.

Easy to read specs:
G4 fitting
10w halogen equivalent
Mains powered
Wide angled light beam
Warm light
non-dimmable
Qty:6

Thanks in advance.

These shmexy looking things should be out at the end of this month, as far as I know they'll be cheaper than Sylvania's past offerings as well.

Please don't hotlink images (that includes those in spoiler tags).

what do you think of the Hue?

tempted to get it set up in our place but its quite an investment.
I love them. The only drawback for me is that they aren't quite as bright as I'd like. Before the Hue bulbs I had 700+ lumen warm LEDs and the Hue's (rated at 600) are noticeably dimmer, though they are just about bright enough. Also be aware that when using colours the brightness goes way down.

The cheapest place to buy them is actually the Phillips store. I found a 25% off code on the net and then discovered that they sent me another 25% off code once I created an account on the store.

I have a room that's 3360mm by 3420mm

I did a quick drawing and divided the measurements by 3 to give me the even spaces. This is to fit 4 down lights converted too LED. It puts them in a grid.

What if I wanted to put them in a pattern. What would the best way be?

Does anyone know any low blue light bulbs, or even better a specific sleeping bulb that changes colour in the evening?
I'm very bad at getting to sleep, and I'm fed up. So want to give it a try.
Downloaded and installed f.lux on laptop/TV, need to find a bulb for bedroom.
I've found Drift Light http://www.drift-light.com/ and Good Night https://www.lsgc.com/fg-01147/ so far, is there anything else and preferably something that can be purchased in the UK?
Found uk supplier

What have you guys found as the warmest coloured COB GU10s?

I have tried "Sunthin" from the big river, and "Lumilife" From LED Hut and both a bit too cool for my use case.

Don't want to get the Chinese super cheapies as I've had some break which is eating into the ROI :(

why did you bother with the choc boxes mate, couldn't you have just made all your connections at the bulb screw terminals - that is what I have done with all of mine

I can drop cable down as have a load of off cuts that will do the sizes runs. Saved me messing about and waisting cable this way.

Anyone got any decent recommendations for led/smd bulbs? After some b22's and e27's. Wouldn't mind buying in bulk as have a few that need to replace. Have tried some eBay ones that are ok but a bit hit and miss in terms of quality!
Suggestions welcome. :)
