LG 42-inch OLED

Not the most encouraging sign - Got to the gaming features and at the end of the VRR text a link to a bit of pop up text "VRR will be available via a future firmware update".

Sigh.

Thought they would have learned their lesson after it took them over a year to roll it out for the 2020 models (and didnt exactly get that right by all accounts). Bit gutting for me as I've been a Sony fan since I was a kid so was already favouring this over the LG 42C2.

I kind of understand on older models given they are using a off the shelf SOC so hard to possibly get it working there given VRR became more important recently. But I agree, would have hoped by now they would have poured effort into the newer stuff, more so 42” and getting the gaming features sorted out the gate. They seem to be pretty much setting the A90K range this year up for gamers in mind with the 42” and 48” panel, would have thought it would come right out the gate with it. Would be formidable as picture wise, Sonys special magic does with the processor usually put them near the top in picture quality. Hopefully sooner rather then later it gets VRR.

Loved my old Bravia - what the hell it was called - 2017 - 55 inch Sony Tv (was very popular) back in the day!
Acually had it until I bought the CX 55. But come on; Sony is way overated IMHO. No magic sauce there at All. And reviewers stated that LG cought up with them, and are just as good - or Not far behind!

So for me Sony with their overpriced products aint never worth it. And still to this days cant get VRR working. Just wtf and look at PS5 - do it even yet are without VRR or what. The biggest joke of all, is that they suppose to be Mr Gaming. Yeah right ..LMAO!

Only good from this gready anticonsumer company is, that they go Pc now with their games. And why not, money talks and even these clowns Finaly seems to get it!

Sony can actually GTFO as im not interested and will suport a POS company like them whatsoever - besides the pc games then - the few exclusives that are worth it!

Yes Sony are more expensive but i tend to wait until offers are on or get a good price from my local Sony store plus they treat me well and I get invited to lots of events as a "good customer" but I would balk at paying the ticket prices

But overall I find their products exceptional and their TVs still have the best picture IMO.

Yeah I know all about it - how popular they are and sure they are good. But it seems LG have playing catching up. Well maybe not there yet, and to each of their own!
So you do it right then buddy - get it for the best price and that you are happy. Thats all that counts :)

Now we have some competition, let us see who's still hot for a the 42inch LG C2?

Alienware just announced the launch price of its 34 inch QD-OLED gaming monitor which has a resolution of 3440x1440 and 175hz refresh rate - and it has a burn in proof warranty. The monitor has a peak brightness of 1400nits, most likely far outstripping the C2.

You expect it to be several thousand right? Nope, Alienware is coming into the market at an LG senior management's jaw dropping $1299.

And to just make LG slightly more tense, it's coming soon, in fact it will be for sale in April

if they get the quality right that will be an awesome widescreen monitor!

Yep it's totaly Insane. That price just wow. For what we are getting. Worlds first QDOLED with Craaazy good specs - it's almost for the price of free. Here take me home buddy, you know you wants to!

But aah damn, the vertical space dont make me happy - just as big as on my PG279Q. Thats the only naah for me. And I dont even know if I would like UW!

If I was just buying a monitor for work/play then that Alienware would have jumped to the top of the list but as it will also be my TV I want 4k so it's a non starter for me. Still it's encouraging to see it being priced aggressively. Hopefully it sets the benchmark for others to follow - ASUS I'm looking at you and your OLED offerings this year....

Got a PS5 so need 4k :(

Seems a good price but for me QD-OLED is the next purchase on - fine for it to mature in meanwhile...

ps3ud0

Glad the QD-OLEDs are affordable and obtainable, but yeah I would need it to be 4K. I wish they released an 34" and 38" and 42".

That sony 42" looks nice but hdtv had a chart showing its not going to have a heatsink like previously suggested by a US retailer source. Its nice regardless to have more options and competition. I would have liked to see Philips announce an 42" size screen so far their 2022 summer OLED launch is only 42" and above OLEDs but they at least all use the new LG EX type Panel so should be brighter, its possible Philips have not announced the 42" yet, I doubt they can be that silly.

Still got Panasonics 2022 Oled series to launch, and we know Asus 42" Rog OLED will have an heatsink lets see if the competition with so much options drives prices down.

Sony are terrible not having VRR out of the box again!! How many years do they do this!

Sony's TV division does not care about games or gamers. LG has been offering Gsync, Freesync and VRR for 3 or 4 years now, LG has also had 4k 120hz for that same period and as far as I'm aware is still the only manufacturer who makes all their HDMI ports 2.1. That's what I had to on my previous TV which was a Samsung and I hated it!

I can't stress enough how important that last bit is. As someone who has a Dolby Atmos sound system, PlayStation 5 and PC plugged into the TV, if I had a TV other than an LG I'd be swapping cables in and out the back of the TV all the time and that would be super annoying

I'm with you on that. Guessing your atmos sound system doesn't have HDMI 2.1 pass through?

HDTV Test put a video out about that too. Not sure what everyone else was expecting but 3k is pretty steep for a 55 even if its new panel tech. Gonna have to be a genuine game changer otherwise theyll struggle to sell IMO.

Some guys over on AV forums I think were comparing those QD-OLED screen grabs with their own calibrated and OLED tvs and it looked similar yet better over those sony QD-OLED comparison screen shots.

Flatpanels also said they could not really see any difference after calibration, between last years Sony OLED and the QD-OLED, maybe calibration does improve the colours that much.

Some footage of the 42" Sony OLED here, and some QD-OLED comparisons:
