LG 42-inch OLED

Yea, it is not as simple as that really. It goes the way it does as they worked how how to maximise profits. All we have to do is wait and price will drop. Don’t want to wait? Pay the premium. I would much rather wait though, time flies by these days :D
No I completely agree with you and maybe I've let my emotions about it get a bit in the way, it's just a bit of a shame. Paired with the 3090 it was a lovely prospect that I'll now likely have to wait another year for. 48 inch is just too big for a desk

That's me priced out then, early rumours were around £800 and I was willing to bite at that but over a grand just for my £450 Xbox? Nah.

Back to the drawing board on finding something that I can work and game on to replace my 1440p monitor

It's an absolute joke. They would sell 50% more of them at 1-1.2k. Putting such a premium on it is frankly crazy form a business point of view. You could sell so much more at a more reasonable price. 1.4k is way over what most people expected to see for a 42 inch tv

But they would only sell 50% more if they had that many made. If they sell all they can currently produce at that price then there is nothing wrong with the price.

these will sell like hotcakes for all those people who cant fit/sit far enough back from a 48" screen.

€1499 would be indeed too much so I'll probably wait too. It sucks this has to be from a business point. Just like the 27" and 32" JOLED monitors costing €2799 and €3499.
And 22" JOLED? €5000 lol.

I think its an inflated price to cash in due to high demand, even stop the fomo and hdtv vids mentioned LG are saving big bux with the new fab process so it really should have resulted in cheaper OLEDs. I guess LG figured since the price of everything in the world has gone up we will just keep the profits and charge the same, drop it to its real price few months later.

Probably will be 1.2k this fall and next spring 1K.

Why can't they produce more? There isn't so much of a shortage of chips anymore is there? I don't think this is about production. I'm really tempted by the c1 48 inch now. I mean that still has 4x hdmi 2.1 and vrr/gsync

You realise that next spring is over a year away right? They will have announced a new TV by then

Size of factory? Number of employees? How many machines?

Its like saying why cant BMW produce 4 million cars from their factory instead of the 2 million they make. If LG can only make 100,000 a month initially of this screen and all 100,000 sell out within days every month, why drop the price?

Once production ramps up and the early buyers have bought then the price will drop. Same with every TV every year.

Was the same with the original 48" screen which came out at the same price and was out of stock at most places for the first few months. Once it had plentiful stock you started to see it everywhere at below £1000 and some special deals at £750.

This will go the same. Either wait or if you can't, buy now.

On your basis nobody should buy any new TV and just buy last years model if its all about the price.

Its not like monitors where they will stay at the same price (or even go up) for year and year after year. I think my current monitor they sold for 6 years before replacing it with a new model.

There will be a new version of this TV out next year, guaranteed.

Its possible the price is incorrect, I called JL 3-4 weeks before the CX launched on their Site and they allowed me to pre-order it at an cheaper price (£100 less only) when they then released it on the site it was £100 more then the price I paid.

But I did miss out on my free LG F4 wireless buds due to their websites being incorrect.

Its hard to say still especially with prices being increased left, right and centre.

Could it be that the price on John Lewis is wrong?

Doubt it, possible but unlikely given you can order it. Take it through the basket as it stands and you will pay that £1400, I tried :D

There is a shortage of chips. But as above, there is a limit to how much they produce. What you need to remember is there is no point investing billions in fabrication space to produce the motherglass, panels etc to so you can meet massive initial demand, only for fabs to then idle as all the demand is eaten up by pricing panels low right when they come out.

makes more sense to produce a consistent amount so fabs have high but consistent utilisation but have it so initial buyers will pay a premium to get it quick then as demand wares off at a premium price, lower it so next set of buyers can jump in. its why the price drops through the year, then by the time you get to end of line, the manufactures jump onto next years panels and all starts again.

Hmm so tempted to get this instead of the 34 QD-Oled that’s due soon as well. Not sure if 42 inches will be overkill for a desktop as I would need to work from it as well as game on it. I have a 1440 monitor at the moment so going up to 2160 should hopefully a nice upgrade.

Yea fair enough. I didn't realise it was the same with the last one

I think you might find even an 42" too big for your daily user. I had an 48" and even 1.5 metre back it was hellish on the eyes and brain and I didn't even use it as a daily but as a secondary display, daily is my 28".

I think the sweet spot would be an 31-34" for an daily, secondary 38-42"+ for a secondary.

But its different for everyone, viewing distance, room layout and usage are big factors in it. Console gamers with space could do an 65" probably.

If you wish to get an idea check the dimensions of an 42" OLED LG (932mm by 540mm) and cut a cardboard cut shape of it and stick it where you would normally be seated to get a rough idea of the sheer scope of it. Its not ideal but it will give you a idea to work with.

Now can I wait til BF while using a 3080 on a 1080p 42" Sony W7 :p

Love to see the retailer cost on this because JL must be making a decent profit...

Actually might make more sense just to get a decent 1440p 27" gaming monitor for PC and the 48C1 for console gaming on the same desk. Cost about the same as the 42C2.

ps3ud0

Thanks for that feedback, that’s very helpful. Was seriously considering this but I have decided to go with the Alienware 32 inch qd-Oled now that they have confirmed a £1099 price and that’s with a 3 year burn in warranty.
