Incorrect guys, What actually happened was.... Full story was written, y'know begging, middle, end. The writers (Cuse/Lindelof) wanted to have a definitive amount of time to write the show into, but ABC just saw a cash cow and decided to commission shed loads of episodes. So once season 2 got to the halfway point the current story arcs were revised and changed along the way to extend the airtime. Once ABC finally backed down after season 3 and told them they had 48 episodes left, they could continue onwards to complete the story and wrap it up into the ending that was planned all along.
That is completely different to "Making it up as they went along"
Someone wakes up on the plane and goes "My god! What a dream!"![]()
Last scene will be a black screen with journey playing or some such crap

Progress is akin to wading through treacle over the last 3 episodes, just how long is this season supposed to be?
15 episodes left iirc
The "what if the plane landed" parallel story arc used to illustrate how they were supposed to go to the island is just grating, we knew they were supposed to go to the island - they've spend the last several season implanting that into our minds. Why bother showing us what happens to them if they didn't.
I was listening to the podcast that came out after the premiere and Damon Lindelof/Carlton Cuse seemed pretty specific in not labelling the plane landing storyline as an alternate timeline, they said it would be explained but the viewers would have to be patient.
I'm just confused as to how they're going to wrap all of this up in the short amount of time if they keep digressing into unimportant side stories. I stand to be proven wrong if they all manage to link up and explain something but at the moment I'm skeptical of seeing that.
Indeed i feel the same way, i love getting answers to things, the last episode provided some interesting answers to certain facts, where the sickness came from and waht it might be but answers without moving the plot forward substaintially annoys me
It's an alternate timeline (perhaps created by the explosion) not a 'what if the plane landed'. These are not the same people that were originally on the plane, e.g. Hurley now only has good luck instead of bad luck. The "what if the plane landed" parallel story arc used to illustrate how they were supposed to go to the island is just grating, we knew they were supposed to go to the island - they've spend the last several season implanting that into our minds.
