LOTRO free to play going ahead.

There's one on Laurelin I believe - just search back a few pages and you should find it.

I found Laurelin very quiet with not many players around, the same with Snowbourn, both these servers are supposed to be the most populated servers, ive found the opposite though?.

I started on Brandywine where the population is a lot busier.

Snowbourn has always been the most populated server of them all, it's heaving even more now since it went f2p.

I've just decided to start playing this, but I downloaded the standard res version and when I tried to install it I had numerous files which didn't download (apparently). It's quite a large file so I was hesitant to dl it again, I'm trying it again now though. However, is there a patch I can download somewhere that could solve my problems?

If the error returns I'll be able to give you more specific details; unfortunately I didn't think about posting here earlier!

I think when character transfers are back up I will move to Laurelin.

Hopefully will be busier than Eldar and quite like the look of the role play events held.

Isn't Brandywine supposed to be the most (possibly over-)populated of all the servers, though? I think for servers with large numbers of EU people, Laurelin was supposed to be the busiest.

In any case there are advantages and disadvantages to how populated a server is - one major one of which is lag (and random disconnects for some people apparently). Of course more people also means it should be easier to find a guild / PUGS for instances.

A good discussion about this subject is given here:

That site is a great resource for a new player, and even experienced players could pick up some great info.

I have migrated my old account and started playing this again, LOVE IT!

I have my two old chars on Eldar (lev 51 and 27) but decided to also start again fresh on Snowbourn!.

I was hoping some of you guys who play this game on a regular basis could give me some advice!
I am still getting to grips with the whole Turbine Points system and trying to figure out the best options available to me. I did spend £40 on pre ordering Rise of Isenguard which gave me 1'000 turbine points, I used these to buy the extra bag slots and then I added a few more points and added the riding skill to my char and got rid of the gold cap!

Due to having a COG account from back in the day from which I had a subscription (monthly) for LOTRO SoA and MoM my account is currently a premium account.

Since hitting level 20+ I have started to notice more and more things which are unavailable to me, such as North Downs quests (possibly a lot more areas too), 3 Virtue Trait slots, swift travel to name just a few.

The dilemma I am in is after having already unlocked things such as the bags, gold cap and also the benifits given to me from pre-ordering ROI is it still worth me paying a monthly subscription? I understand this is for me to decide but was hoping some of you can give me some advice if you had the same dilemma as me.

Must admit I find it really frustrating that I bought the games SoA and MoM in box's and paid lots of money for my past subscriptions yet im being told to buy the content again.

I would suggest getting one month's subscription (about 9 quid) to unlock all your traits, and fast travel for any character you log in with. This will save you a lot of grind, and the extra 500 TPs you will get should be enough to allow you to buy Evendim.

This will enable you to level your character from mid-20's to almost 45 when you can start doing the Path of the Fellowship quests from ROI preorder. (You might need to do a few skirmishes to get the last couple of levels.)

I was not aware that I could just do a one month subscription? to be honest I find it all a bit confusing, people are running around on different terms and conditions as others and so on! A lad I play with has a lifetime subscription which cost £70 before Turbine was running with the game, he never has to pay for anything else ever again!

If I can subscribe for a month then I will probably do that, having said that I also heard somewhere about herring a month free?

I haven't heard anything about a free month, but the general consensus on the LOTRO forums is that for a player starting out, the combination of the ROI legendary pack and a single month's subscription is the best option as this will enable you to play the entire game without needing to grind TPs at all. And all for about 40 quid.....

I did this and also bought the largest point bundle when it was on special offer so have unlocked pretty much everything I will ever need (including 7 character slots per server) for £70 quid.

So you paid for the subscription and then bought all the quest packs out of your turbine points once your one month subscription ended? Would it not make more sense to just carry on the subscription?

Depends on how long you intend to play the game I suppose. That well-spent £70 is almost like buying a lifetime sub.

I agree with what your saying and I have thought that I should just unlock all the quest packs to give me a kind of like...lifetime subscription BUT the problem come when your looking to buy your char vitrue traits, riding skills and so on, if you intend on having a few chars then your going to be spending an aweful lot of money

You certainly don't have to buy virtue traits. Quite possible to get the ones you want up through the course of normal play.

As for riding skill, I don't know, as I have a lifetime. Do you have to unlock it for every toon, or can you still do the riding quest at level 35?

You do, I am a level 23 Hunter and I have 2 Virtue slots open and the remaining 3 all have the TP logo on them. I know some unlock as you level, race for example has a couple of open slots and the ones that are not available dont show a TP logo.

I haven't hit level 35 yet so im not sure about the riding quest at level 35, its not a account unlock its an unlock for each char/toon.

Ah, you have to actually unlock the slots! Cripes :)

I thought you meant actually buying trait levels, ie Wisdom 2 etc.

Yeah...very frustrating! Ill get myself a months subscription tonight and go from there. Do I order this through my turbine account, last time I looked it was kind of asking for my bank details before I had even selected what I wanted to buy lol.

Thanks for all the advice.

This is the reason I got 7 (actually 9 but two were put on hold when my month's subscription ended) character slots. This way I have one character of every class with all their traits / swift travel / gold cap / etc unlocked. As someone else pointed out, the 70 quid I spent means that I am almost as well off as those lucky few who bought a lifetime subscription at that price. As I plan on playing on and off for at least a year (and probably a lot longer), this works out much cheaper than buying a subscription and I will own the content rather than losing access to quest packs when the subscription runs out....
