LTT called out

I like to think positively that people aren't all like that.
my day to day experience (face to face with people) is that generally people are ok, they're just living their lives and getting on with it.

the internet just enables all the a-holes and idiots to get together more easily and circle-jerk their opinions with one another.
Yes, most aren't but they're all out there, it it's only 1% that's a lot of them. I think a lot of it is down to age too. Just think back to being at school and how the kids behaved, now translate that to the internet with, almost, no chance of being held responsible. I was at school pre-internet but I can think of a few morons that would have gone full on anarchist if they'd had internet access

Many things in life are scripted, such as the interactions you always have when browsing in a retail store. PR is no different and this apology was nothing more than a script taken out of a common sob story.

The top brass had the mentality of "don't worry, it will blow over" and the content will be slow for now, but in time everything will be back as it was before and the same **** will continue as normal.

We'll see, honestly, this video falls short IMO and they shouldn't be let off the hook so easily. If this came out 24hrs after GN's first video and nothing was released on the forums then I would consider the matter closed and move on. But in the last 24hrs highly troubling things have surfaced that need addressing.

Linus outright lying and then picking a subordinate to fall on his sword is bad enough, but then the SA and Gaslighting allegations are a real problem. And if nothing is done about it then they're hypocrites because I remember Liunus tearing Ubisoft a new one for the very behaviour that has happened in his own company. And from what she has written then Linus is at minimum guilty of being dismissive of the problem at the time.

the internet has become a toxic cesspit (well social media at least)

I'll grab this one...

Social media is just a platform, its people that put stuff on there that are the problem, so to blame SM, or a specific platform misses the point, IMHO

Finally watched the three videos. The two GN videos and the LTT apology(?) video

So the GN video, while seemingly a bit vindictive at times in the way he words things and cuts statements up, he was right on the money though, in his compliant about accuracy and sloppy work by LTT.
The billet labs fiasco is interesting. Because they were right to highlight it especially the selling auctioning of the block, but they clearly don't have the full story. More on that later.

The second GN video is not as great and boy oh boy was Steve incredibly uncharitable here. He says that Linus willfully ignored the criticisms on data accuracy but that is not true he does mention it in the post. If you want to say that he didn't do enough to address that is another conversation but to say that it was ignored is flat out wrong. His comment on gaslighting is the uncharitable interpretation of that paragaraph. Also Steve actually thought they would create an entire process for correcting these issues in 4 hours? That is stupid. That is not even close to being reasonable.
He once again asks Billet labs for a comment but never asked LTT for a comment and now looks like a fool. More on that later.

The first video is one thing but after that second one, I would be surprised if Linus and Steve are on speaking terms, for a long time.

The LTT apology(?) video. I don't think it was an apology video. It seems to be a video to address the outcry of one the shoddy work issue and two the billet lab issue. Judging by how everyone was talking about it I thought the jokes would be way worst. They didn't bother me, I could see why someone people wouldn't like it though. The final segue with Dbrand was literally at the end of the video. I don't believe that anyone is truly upset about that. Consdering the two issues in question, I don't think it actually warrants a serious no joke, no nonsense apology video.

The billet lab controversy.

Apparently they told LMG they could keep it, till they saw the coverage and the requested it back (I saw this floating around somewhere, could be false so take it with a pinch of salt)
The incompetence and miscommunication happens and stuff is not shipped back and then it is auctioned off. Everyone knows this bit
The emails happen on the Thursday 10th August. One of which is Colton trying to email them back and forgetting to actually put there email address in.
GN drops their video on the Monday 14th August
4 Hours later Linus emails Billet lab and claims to have told Billet labs about Colton's lost email and what had happened.

There was clearly a lot of context missing from GN's initial coverage. Considering what the intial video was about, lets see if GN will practise what they preach and issue a correction or a retraction to that story. Anyone want to take any bets?

Linus claims to have emailed Billet labs explaining what had happened, with Colton's email. I don't think he is making that up. But it raises questions about GN second video and the comments.
Either
Billet Labs did not read this part of the email
or Billet labs intentionally never mentioned that part of Linus' email in response to GN when they were asked about it for GN's second video
or Billet labs did mention is but GN did not read their email properly
or GN saw this but decided to leave it out and not include full context.

It would be ironic if after slamming LMG for poor communication there ends up being an example of poor communication between Billet Labs and GN. What do you think has happened? My money is on Billet Lab being ****** and intentinally not mentioning it.

Funny

Its all pink ponies and eternal friendship among tech youtubers

... until the moment their business interests clash
Then its immediate 0 to 100 gloves off blame smear fest utilising all their not insignificant media resource. Classic capitalism

Used to watch both GN and LTT almost daily, now really don't want to click on either videos

What pees me off the most is that billet issue. Someone sends something in to you to review and then send it back, but nooo, firstly linus doesnt review it properly because of his incompetence and didnt want to pay the extra money to test it properly then to cut losses the sells the product insted of returning it back to the company.
That sums up the type of person he is and companies should take note that ltt is unreliable and not trustworthy to be sending in stuff for review.

He often keeps things that companies send him that he was meant to send back, it comes up quite often as a light-hearted joke in the videos.
"They forgot I had this. Now they've seen this they might want it back!" etc.

It doesn't even register for larger companies so its not worth their time to chase him, but they will still send more stuff because they want coverage of their product.

I'm not sure that in itself is unusual or indicative of anything, I think that probably goes on *a lot* among a lot of tech review outlets.

The Billet Labs situation is obviously extremely different.

Billet labs seems to have accurately relayed the time line of events to GN and GN appears to have accurately relayed that time line.

All we have is a screen shot from the appology video claiming that LMG "forgot" to include the company they were communicating with in said email. And, whoever is on the email chain, there apperantly wasn't a person on the auction team in the loop either.

So no one that should have seen this email actually did see it.

The best-case scenario is that Linus knew about this email, also missed the fact that it was not sent to Billet, and then proceeded to claim GN lacked "context". Even though the context he was speaking of wasn't itself accurate.

At best, it's another oversight by Linus (failing to catch the fact that Billet wasn't on the list of people the email was sent to), not GN.

GN got it right.

I find these sentences to be oxymoronic which makes me laugh. On one hand you seem pretty certain that Billet labs are not lying and then in the next breath talk about exercising skepticism with LMGs claim, even though by your very own words LMG has at least tried to provide proof.

You are now making stuff up. Also are you really trying to suggest that Linus should be checking the emails that his team sends out to ensure that they are going to the right people? What is this nonsense.

Even though the context he was speaking of wasn't itself accurate.
So you've gone from exercising skepticism to now just saying that LMG are lying. Took you all of about 2 sentences to say how you really felt. You should have just started there.

Linus said they had "already" squared up with Billet. That was inacurate with respect to the "context" he mentioned Steve should have called to get ahead of time...even though Linus' email (that actually went to Billet) happened AFTER the GN video went live.

I trust Billet more than Linus at this point, yes. Linus' misleading "already" statement in his apology statement warrants distrust. I have not seen such misleading behavior from Billet or GN (yet) in this matter.

No he didn't and I have already made a post pointing this out. To you funny enough.

You realise there are two way to interpret the last sentence right because it is actually quite vague? He doesn't actually state who they agreed with. He never said that "we had already agreed with billet labs to compensate them on the cost of the prototype". Yet that is how everyone is reading it.

You realise that external payment and compensation is not a decision that the initial LMG employee could have made and would need to be escalated internally? Just to avoid confusion that doesn't mean going straight to the CEO for a decision.

So the other way to read it is that internally this was raised and a decison was made to pay them. It could have been waiting for a final sign off for all we know. Only 4 days had passed between the email and GNs video.

So maybe Linus was lying through his teeth or maybe Linus was talking about an agreement being made internally. We don't know but don't let that let that stop your biases and emotions guiding you to the answer you want to be true. I will wait for more information.
