After cloning and swapping your boot disc in bios then you can remove your old drive or format it for another use.

You can unplug it after you've shut down the system.

Thanks for the reply, i got another question to ask. Im missing one of the cables that connect to the ssd the one with smaller connetion slot to the ssd, can i use a dvd cable intead to connect to the ssd and MB.I have a non functional xps630i from dell and it still has the DVD cable i thought ill use that to connect the SSD.
Thanks again and my apologies for vectoring away from the topic thread.

you can use any sata cable to connect the ssd to the motherboard but be aware if its a sata 2 cable and not sata 3 your not going to get your full read and write speeds from the drive

Nope, sata cables are all the same. Only difference is the new ones have clips and they are tested at the speeds they are quoted at. Cable should work the same

I assume with the tick boxes on the partitions I could use this to move from a single partitioned drive a an SSD and HDD.

So I have a 1tb drive with a 250gb partition for windows and the rest for everything else.
Anything wrong with me cloning the boot and 250gb partition but not the data part?

Thanks,

ash

ah cool thanks, and to think I have been putting off getting an SSD because I couldnt be bothered to reformat haha:D

As I'm about to get my first ssd, will this work in the same way with cloning (inc w7 o/s) from a hdd to ssd?

Use the Macrium Reflect rescue disc to create the image, if you're dealing with a live operating system. This method allows Windows to shut-down properly.

This...

I much prefer the idea of working on a system that isn't actively writing to the drive that you're imaging.

Not sure why everyone thinks this is such an issue? It's not black magic - it uses Volume Shadow Copy to ensure a consistent copy is made.

Was using Acronis and not my first time (but not something I do that often) - but good to have a quick read through of this guide to get my head into it/prepare in advance, thanks.
