Macrium Reflect Cloning Guide

The clone works like a charm, but I did it wrong.

My normal drive c: is a 128gb Samsung 830 (118gb formatted)

My new drive is a 250gb Samsung 850 (232gb formatted)

Macrium seems to have cloned the 118gb to the 232gb drive and now the 232gb is only showing 118gb of space.

This is what I get for getting a job and using wyse boxes every day.. I've become a noob again = (

Yeah it does, just go in windows disc manager and expand the 118gb partition to fill the ssd

Thanks guys. I did go into Disk Management but it wouldn't let me extend the partitions for some reason.

In a panick I went back to the old drive, booted in with that and formatted the EVO, then started again using Samsung's Data Migration software. A warning to people using it, the Migration software doesn't appear until you go through the motions of connecting without the drive the first time - so I just went to Sammy's website and installed the Migration software separately. This worked a treat... although I have to say the EVO 850 doesn't appear to boot / do anything quicker than the old 830 did.

Any one cloned an ssd to a normal hdd. I want to re-utilise my ssd in another build but keep the current machine active just with a slower drive. I would also be cloning to the hdd whilst it's in a sub enclosure?

I've cloned to an HDD just fine but not one in an enclosure.as long as macrium picks up the drive then I can't see why you wouldn't be able to clone to and from it

just downloaded this in hoping to clone my C: and get incompatible disk selected :(

Seems to hate 3.63TB drives.(external HDD's)

If it on the disk your cloning then yes,it should clone the entire disk,I think it also gives you the option to tick the partitions you want to clone

yeah but you have to pay for them

only other free one I know of is Samsung's data migration tool but they only work if you have atleast one Samsung drive

other good ones but paid are, acronis and paragon migrate

Hi,

I have a simple question about cloning. As you can see in the attached screenshot, I want to clone my Windows partition (a new SSD). For the destination drive I just want to use my "old" Windows partition (on a simple HDD).
I already clicked "Copy selected partitions" and afterwards I can see in the destination drive how Macrium Reflect will clone my drive.

My question is: As long as I have engough space on the destination drive, does Macrium not delete the other partition on the destination drive during the cloning process (as you can see with the letters: W,D and E) ?

according to that screenshot it shouldn't but its best to backup those partitions if you can just to be on the safe side, then go ahead with the clone

I didn't have enough space for an additional backup of those partitions - so I thought: no risk no fun :-D but afterwards it works great and my partitions have not been deleted.

Thanks!

I googled which freeware cloning software to use when moving to a bigger SSD and it came down to this one and Paragon's equivalent. Both seem very similar but I went with Paragon's because I've used their software before and liked it.

Copied the SSD to an image file, then copied that image file back to the new SSD. Worked perfectly, including making the main partition bigger, but it'd be quicker if a direct copy was possible in the free edition.

Just updated my licence to version 6.

Crikey it's fast!

Loads up in no time and a 15GB system backup image took under 5 minutes to take.

This evening I tried to clone my 128GB Samsung 830 to my new 500GB Samsung 850. Macrum didn't seem to work properly - despite following all the steps in the thread, the PC wouldn't boot and told me "Insert boot device and press enter" or somesuch. So I tried EaseUS and that worked fine, although it took a bit longer.

Once Windows was up and running again it told me it needed reactivating (sigh) so I had to spend a few minutes on the phone to Microsoft but it all went through OK.

Anyways, all seems to be working nicely now which is ace.
