Masters of the Air 2023

Those are real P51s and yet they can't even get some footage of a take off or some roll of them actually flying.

Instead of that it goes quick cut from the runway to some iffy CGI.

I watched this to see if it was better as I'd never heard of it. Maybe you have rose tinted glasses on it but it's awful. The acting is hammy at best and the reality of the situation was comical.. It didn't come close to this series.

Interesting, I found the film quite enjoyable.
Not sure why the situation was comical?

There was some guy up in the plane having a fight with each other for no reason and then another one giving away his stuff cause he thought he was gona die. Then another dude was just screaming for no reason.. It was weird.

This is really missing that character development, someone else mentioned previously that its likely due to the high death rate so telling a story of the few like BOD is rather tricky, but this is really lacking it! i can sort of tolerate the swipes at the RAF due to it being American but almost feels like u572 all over again, quote the "p51 was the best fighter plane of the war", being generous i suppose, from a b17 crew, it probably was as thats what they had most interaction with.
Nice to see some telling of the Red Tails and their frustrations, i wonder if we will ever see something of the polish pilots on the big screen.

What im intrigued about is how the Germans had so much intel on the downed airmen, quite impressive if true to facts.

I really liked episode 8, my favourite of the bunch so far.

I also lamented the lack of conventional ‘character building’ at the start of the show but I’m surprised to find that I now actually quite like that it’s a bit understated.

These are supposed to be ‘everyday people’ in a pretty surreal situation… where their everyday actions require balls of steel. Isn’t that sort of enough…? The events speak for themselves without any additional dramatisation.

Especially after the Red Tails film.

But why are they in a series that's about the 100th bomb group? One based in Norfolk, and the other in Italy. Never operated together.

Could it possibly be because without them the cast would have been entirely white?

its because they all ended up at Stalag Luft III together

I never even heard of them until this show (that’s more of a reflection of my tiny bit of knowledge about the war than their involvement) so I read a bit about them on Wikipedia.

Seems crazy to me these guys wanted and were proud to serve America with how they would’ve been treated at home. But I suppose the alternative with Nazi Germany winning would’ve been worse than their current situation.

For another that fancies a weird, ‘jet black comedy’ version of Masters of the Air, I can recommend the film version of Catch 22.

It’s my favourite book and it’s a pretty good adaptation. It shows its age in some ways but, yup, real planes and explosions… which are pretty impressive.

Totally mad, funny and also depressing - just my cup of tea :p

Did you see the newer series? I thought it was good, does a great job about the horror of having to go back up each time

I haven’t! I think it was on my radar when it was announced but I forgot about it… until I did a wiki search on the film :)

Might check it out in a couple of years!

Last one this week isn't it? It's been good enough to keep me watching* but I doubt I'll rewatch it when all is said and done.

*That doesn't really mean much when one of my favourite TV shows is 'Paranormal caught on camera on the 'Blaze' channel

Yeah I really liked this episode which surprised me as tbh I've been pretty disappointed with the series overall.
