Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

After 3 years of faultless ownership, I said goodbye to my E63S today and traded it in for an M5 Competition. Will miss the awesome noise

Interested to hear how the two compare. You may recall I (sort of) went the other way: M5 non-comp to a facelift C63s coupe. I really liked the M5, but even the preFL was muted, especially after a C7 RS6.

I love the look of the facelift M5 comp and even considered it recently, however I figured the E63s would be more enjoyable due to the noise. So it’s very interesting to me you went the other way.

As an aside I’m 3 weeks into PS2 ownership. I caved due to the very enticing salary sacrifice scheme at work. I’m very happy with it, but whilst I do miss the noise of a V8, I actually also enjoy the lack of any noise. I’ve gone for the Performance version, but it’s still not quite the thrill of an ICE car.

For sure the M5 Comp doesnt sound as good compared to the E63S, mine was a 2019 so didn't have the OPF. I haven't even had the M5 (the M5 is a 21 plate so presumably it does have an OPF) a week yet but my thoughts on the two so far

For E63S - Steering far better than the M5, the steering on the M5 feels floaty and disconnected especially on comfort. Noise far better than the M5, the M5 seems more artificial sounding perhaps due to the noise coming through the speakers? Prefer the far more customisable dash on the Mercedes

For M5 - The interior is far better nailed together compared to the E63S, the front seats are more comfortable and adjustable, think the M5 has it on the looks department

Performance wise, there isnt much in it in real world driving but I feel the E63S is the more involving of the two

I tested an M5 Comp and an RS6 before deciding on the E63S and agreed on the points you've made. Would have been happy with any of them but the E63S just felt more aggressive yet practical. RS6 felt a bit too clinical and the M5 was great but I wanted an Estate/SB ideally.

Got my c43 serviced yesterday at a local specialist. Engine oil, oil filter, air filter, gearbox oil, gearbox oil filter, antifreeze top up and a general health check for £608.
I have no doubt this would have been close to if not over a grand at Mercedes.
It's a great car, I have been thinking about replacing it but I can't think of anything that is significantly better in the same category.

The only thing next, is to go for the v8 ;)

I would, but as it's our only car it's not economical to do the 2 mile school run in :)

Not to play devils advocate, but...

I've had a C43, C63 and a C63S, and fuel economy isn't too dissimilar. In fact, long runs, I actually averaged better in the C63 than I do the 43. I think the best I ever saw in my C43 was 35mpg on a trip up to Old Trafford, however, last time I drove to Old Trafford in the C63, I averaged 36.2MPG :D even have pics to prove it I was so shocked haha

My C63S I think is almost identical to the C63, give or take. Around town, again, not massively different between the V6 and V8, maybe 10% in it which isn't really that bad when you're talking the low to mid 20's

The v8 does have the bonus of 4 cylinder deactivation which is great on a long run. I had the E43 and E63S and dont recall there was a big difference in consumption either

It is tempting if I did less miles in it. I really want a facelift too but they are just out of my budget and are so rare.

Didn't know about the cylinder deactivation. That makes it interesting for cross country trips!
Could try the E43, more power and a bit more luxury but same running costs pretty much
I did think about it but it's a bit too big and I'd prefer the E53.

Gearbox oil the big item there surely? My local specialist did my E43 for under 300 including MOT IIRC.

Yeah, it was at least half the cost. Annoyingly, the gear changes are still a bit jerky so I will ask them to reset the adaptions to see if that makes a difference.

Been actively looking for C63 estates and there is not very much on the market that is >2017, low miles and decent options ticked. There's hardly any S estates for sale and none on Mercedes approved used.

Been looking at a C63 (non S) that is owned by a doctor at my surgery. It has the right spec but the miles are high (85k) and it's 18 months older than my C43, but, it would be a straight swap within ~£1k if I can sell my car for what I think it's worth. Seems like a good deal and I will not be doing that many miles in it as I'm getting an EV on Friday, which will cover 90% of my weekly journeys. It's accompanied by a massive folder of receipts and has had no expense spared.
The other alternative is to spend a further £14-£16k on an S with less miles.

Having had both, I'd say get the S if you can.

Saying that, when I just had the standard C63, I didn't think much of it, it's only when I got the S that I realised I should have got one all along. If it's pre-2019 then you definitely want the S as it has all the extra bits such as better engine mounts, better brakes, suspension, e-diff. I think after 2019 with the face lift, most of those are on S and non-S cars anyway so it doesn't matter so much.

That extra power, although not much, makes a big difference as well especially in the power delivery on the low-mid rev range.

That said, if you can't justify that extra 14-16k, you won't be disappointed in the non-S, especially if you don't know any different between the two. The standard C63 is still an absolute beast of a car and I loved mine. And again, going from a C43 to a C63 like I did, you'll be blown away at the upgrade

The most annoying thing is the lack of S estates available. There's a handful and only a couple are worth looking at. There aren't even any through Mercedes. I haven't driven an S either so I probably should to see the difference, although I'm still not convinced that the additional outlay will be worth it as I'll only drive it on weekends.

Yeah I regularly check just out of curiosity to see how mine is doing value wise and I can never find S estates, especially >2021, for sale to compare :D I always think that must make them more valuable but I'll probably be wrong come the time to change
