Mercedes Benz and AMG Owners

Finding myself more and more drawn to a w211 estate - but realistically know little to nothing about them.

Would ideally be looking for a 350 though choice seems pretty limited. I know the cars up to around 2006 seem to be more prone to issues with the brake system but other than this I know....not a lot

What would I need to think about on say a late 2006/2007 7gg

If you're avoiding the earlier models to be free from SBC then the only other thing that could develop problems and cost a bit more to repair is the Airmatic system (pump or struts mainly). I think it was optional on the E350 so depends on spec.

Dont worry about airmatic, its an old tried and tested system these days. Struts can be refurbed worst case and the pumps are quite cheap these days and would only ever be a once ever change item.

TBH, ditto SBC, you can replace the module for next to nothing.

Just picked up my loaner CLS to keep until my C350e finally arrives from Germany.

It's a lovely car I must say, looks stunning in black.

Shame it's only the 220d but it goes well enough.

Did worry that I wouldn't want to get into the C350e once i'd taken delivery of the CLS but it's decidedly old fashioned in comparison, also performance is not on a par of course :)

Also with the colder mornings I'm looking forward to the remote heating function to warm the car so no more scraping!

Don't get too used to the fabulous headlights on the CLS (assuming it is the latest model) - I still, after nearly a year, cannot believe how awesome the lighting system is on mine!

Yes I know, I ordered my C350e and didn't go for the Intelligent Lighting System but wishing I had now.

Especially as it isn't that expensive an option but I was at my budget limit unfortunately.

Looking forward to experiencing it on the CLS later though.

Went to see a 2007 e280 elegance estate today just to get a good look at one and make sure it seems suitable.

This particular car isnt looking like it's for me but goingnto go back to drive it just to make sure a 280 isn't going to feel powerful enough (which I doubt it will, but it would open up more choice) and to make sure I like the general drive but there was one particular oddity with it.

The car had a very detailed history in way of invoices dating back to its purchase but no book. Are these digital/online only? Seems odd the owner would go to such effort to keep all the dated and mileage registered invoices but not the book.

Just wondering whether I need to call Merc in advance of going to see any car I think I might buy.

I am currently driving a 2015 E220 'AMG Night Edition BlueTEC' (Seriously?! Worst model name ever?) and one of the most noteworthy things about it are the absolutely incredible headlights, which I presume is the Intelligent Lighting System.

Absolutely incredible, the way it wraps the beam around other traffic is amazing to watch. Makes the Adaptive Xenon's on my 5 Series look decidedly low tech!

I'm very surprised to find such an advance option fitted to a car otherwise full of old tech like a key you have to turn in the dash and parking sensors that are not integrated with COMAND :D

I'm guessing they are standard fit as it's probably a runout model but wow, I'd definitely be looking to option them if I was buying a Mercedes as some of you guys are. I bet it's the sort of tech people won't order as they simply won't know how good it is, given how few test drives will take place at night.

I was fuming that the salesman who helped me spec the 5 series was clueless about these. I would have absolutely specced them had I known they did that. Alas, it wasn't until after it was too late the it was realised.

No books anymore, all digital and on their system.

Surely not on an 8 year old one?

Yup, started around about 2005.

Interesting reading about the lighting package - didn't realise the lights could do all of that. The wonders of technology (and the cost when it all goes wrong!).

The CLS system (MultiBeam LED) is actually a notch up again on the ILS on E-class cars - some natty YT clips out there and MBs info, but the setup is full LED with 24 distinct elements and so on. Really was a big selling point for me, as previous car had woeful headlights (XF, non-Xenon!)

Hi Guys,

Still on the look out for a replacement car for the A4, however between being busy with the new job and also spending much needed time with the family it is still low on the priority list.

A daily visit on the Autotrader has shown me a car of interest is the Merc CLS. Currently take a car allowance and think it should cover a loan of around £16k with a chop in of my car so budget is around £20k in total.

They just look spot on! Love the styling, something like this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...sedcars&keywords=AMG&sort=pricedesc&logcode=p

What is the general feeling about these cars? I mean even the 2006 ones look fantastic on the outside, just a little dated inside but still cracking looking cars for even £7k.

I originally thought I wanted an estate car as the next car, however after speaking to the wife I think we are just going to keep the Qashquai and possibly run it until it breaks and use as the family hack mobile.

So love the looks of the CLS but know nothing about them! The link is a 3l diesel, what is the 2.1 like in a car such as this? Can get newer cars again if I go down an engine (although I think the 3l is the one to go for).

Anything I need to look out for on these? Any other alternatives?

I will not be going out tomorrow to buy a car, buying my time pocketing the allowance currently but just seeing what options I have got.

Anyone here with a C63?

If so how long have you had it and what has the overall experience been like?

I'm currently driving a CLS 220d, it's a new one which only had 200 miles on the clock but after having for a week now has 1200.

It's a big car for the 2.1 diesel, doesn't really matter if you aren't a sporty driver of course as it gets up to speed reasonably and cruises well.

It's the base model but is really well equipped, love the Intelligent LED lights especially as they are phenomenal.

When I was loaned it by the MB dealer he said the main issue with them was depreciation.

At just under 5 metres in length I think that it's too big unless you really are into large cars.

If you'd got a family note that the one I'm driving only has two rear seats with storage etc in the middle.

I'm not so sure it does to be honest - I had a '15 E220 CDI for the weekend and did quite a few miles and found it frustratingly breathless.

I also loved the intelligent LED lights, absolutely amazing.
