Microsoft Flight Simulator X

frustrating!

I'm already becoming bored of FSX...

Firstly, I run the game and then it crashes...next time I try and load, it doesn't get past the splash screen (the Loading bar does not appear after the first two bars are done) and it eventually brings up 'Not Responding'. I've looked around for a fix and apparently deleting the logbook.bin file works - this hasn't worked.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game, repairing the installation and all sorts. Sometimes it lets me in again but if the game crashes I am back to exactly the same situation whereby it needs at least a reinstall to have any chance of loading again. If I even do get in the game looks very average even on Ultra High settings - can anything go right with it?! Also, is it just me or do you not get any shortcuts in the Start Menu or on the desktop to play the game? All I can find is one in the 'Games' section of the Vista style start menu.

If anyone can offer any advice I'll accept it because I'm ready to throw it in the bin already.

(Using Vista, tried with and without FSX SP1 applied, 4000+/3GB XMS/8800 GTS 640 using various driver versions)

oh dear! works lovely for me in vista, I just took a shortcut from the stupid games section to where I wanted it.

I think you better check all your drivers.

First of all, ensure you have the very latest VGA drivers. Assuming you have, next up is to slide all rendering settings to minimum. No computer runs Ultra High and if you get average frame rates as you say you're doing better than most. Again, run all sliders on min and then gradually wind them up. Keep reinstalling FSX won't fix it and will tire you very quickly.

Maybe worth pulling a Gig of RAM out and running 2GB instead. I'm running Vista Business 32bit, Intel Core2Duo E6300, GSkill 2GB PC6400, ATi X1900XT and have no problems here despite also running SP1, Active Sky and VFR GenX Photo Scenery.

mm - odd - I have mine on almost max (without bloom) -at 1900x1200 on a 1900XT with ActiveskyX + other addons - and its fine - smooth frame rates (have it locked at 33fps) - no crashes either.

even have the water on 2.X

Mark.

here are 2 screenies from the other day - smooth frame rates - ActiveskyX addon :) Completely smooth - also have 4x temoporal AA on too.

I do, I have the latest NVIDIA beta drivers 158.45 (don't think beta is an issue as I've tried other sets previously).

Note that they were automatically set at Ultra High, though I decided to leave them to see just how impressive the game looked. I wasn't concerned about low FPS, but the graphical quality at these settings was incredibly poor to say the least so I am not sure why :) They looked like GTA3 on low quality would!

Basically when loading, it seems to stop when a certain amount of data has been loaded into memory and the CPU usage drops off to 0%. Very strange. I have also updated every possible driver that I can do and still no difference.

Weird. I notice Buckster and I are stable on ATi's. I wonder if that plays a part at all?

@Buckster: quality clouds in the first pic. Active Sky is fantastic.

spinneR - it is isn't it :)

my only bug-bear - and customer support (which seems great for AS) - are working on it - is getting better Thunderstorms/Cumulo-nimbus clouds, as at the moment - unless you are right underneath them - they look a bit poor - ie they just look like normal summer fluffy clouds.

also if you get above some type of overcast sky (which looks much more threatening now) - it suddenly becomes transparent when you are above it- which also looks a bit poor - but they are working on a fix :)

Mark.

Hmm seems to work once sometimes when I restart the computer and then struggles to do so again after....very strange. Might sound like a stupid question being on these forums but is anyone running this overclocked? I'm tempted to see if it's that causing any problems as it does in some games.

First tried FSX on my Asus p5n-e SLI with all other hardware as listed below and was getting under 10FPS, with service pack 1.

Have moved to Gigabyte DS3R and is usually sticking to the 20FPS target with the occasional drop for a split second down to maybe 15/16, but very smooth.

And I have upped the settings quite far beyond the default.

Will be testing it with a 8600gt tonight on my current rig.

Are there any free planes for FSX about with a decent virtual cockpit? I only tend to use the VC and most free ones don't seem to come with one. Either that or its rubbish ;)

A very nice freeware Aero Commander 500 with full working VC can be found here with some screenshots.

Ooo, that looks very nice. Will download that now. That's the kinda standard addon I'm after really - unfortunately most are payware. I bought the Overland Airbus pack but those aren't really fully compatible with FSX. Takes a lot of work to get them running properly

Have just bought Active Sky and X Graphics, 520mb to download, will post a little review and some screenies once it's all up and running.

Taff

Had it for a week or 2 now, Well worth the cash.

Hi Dashik,

I've installed both products and their looking a lot more complex than I was expecting.

I've run them both as standard out of the box and there is a definite improvement. Have you made any specific tweaks to the settings or them or is there anything in particlaur you'd recommend to get the best out of them.

Cheers

Taff

is there a setting to let you move around the virtual cockpit with your mouse or are you stuck using the keypad which is bloomin annoying!

Yes, there is a feature to let you move around the VC ; hold the space and drag the mouse around. :)
