Midweek Football Thread *spoilers*

Assist for Gibson there, lovely header though, that's a bit of the old Vidic right there. Anderson was awful against Villa, I have major doubts over his long term future. Game after game I just don't see what he's being asked to do or the exact purpose we bought him for. He's a hybrid midfielder, can't call him attacking because to be frank that would be laughable, and you can't call him a defensive midfielder as he's not.

Gibson is far more likely to set up a goal or score one than Anderson is. :p

Here's hoping BFS gives the team a boot up the backside and we actually do something in the second half. According to the beeb we've recovered 9 points from losing positions this season, second only to Chelsea. I live in hope.

I think the best direct comparison for Anderson would be Edgar Davids in his prime, whilst not saying that Anderson is anywhere near David's standard at this moment in time he's the player I can most liken Anderson too

The most frustrating this with Anderson is his passing, if he sorts that out then I can see him nailing down a position in the team. Alas far too many of his passes are to the opposing team.

The thing against Villa, that was a game we really missed having Quieroz on the bench. We just didn't know how to break down Villa and for all Mickey Phelans thigh rubbing action, I still think we lack tactical nouse in games like that.

Ando is perfect for our midfielder and we watch his play, you can see that he is being groomed to take over from Scholes. He's great at holding and protecting the ball and keeping it alive. If there is any question mark over a midfielder (other than Nani) it has to be over Carrick imho

Obertan and Gibson have been a bit poor so far, can't see why Gibson is starting over Ando, that should change.

I think Gibson has had a decent game so far - Got us the penalty with his corner and produced vidic's header from a corner. First time for a while I've actually seen a united player who can consistently clear the first defender from a corner.

But Gibson is more likely to score a goal ;)

Seriously though given Gibson goal scoring form if nothing else he deserves his start IMO

Yes his scoring record is good but he shoots A LOT, as in nearly every time he gets the ball. I wonder how many more chances we'd create if he sometimes passed it forward instead of just shooting. Anderson has far more passing ability.

The end of the half sums up why Obertan is frustrating, beautiful run into the box then a tame pass towards the goalkeeper, making the run utterly redundant. either shoot properly or square it to a striker.

Yeah Carrick has a question mark over his head too, missing the whole beginning of the season wasn't right especially when Ferguson started talking about Carrick being a player who only finds his form a few months into the season. He wasn't even being selected for the team during the first number of games so that really baffled me, how is a player supposed to find form by not playing? A few of our players just seem to have their heads elsewhere, Carrick, Vidic, Ferdinand, Anderson, Nani and Berbatov (but with reason).

I do remember Ferguson stating that Anderson was bought in mind to replace Scholes, but he never seems to play that role, maybe too much is being asked of him and aspects of his game are suffering as a result. He keeps the ball very well and can pick out perfect passes but is inconsistent. He's still young and will no doubt improve, I just think too many players are being asked to do more or be able to play in different roles instead of their natural role.

Exactly, its about time we had balls that actually went into the heart of the box from corners.

Granted he couldn't pass for toffee against Villa but that's madness, Carrick is without doubt our best passer and opens up so many attacking opportunities for us just by being able to pass it with both feet

Fletcher has probably made it harder to call Carrick our best midfielder but if he isn't then he's certainly in the top two
