Mistakes of this console generation

Then you should have made a 'you must own all consoles' format in the original post. How people can possibly comment on a console they don't own is asking for trouble. You get such statements like.. He obviously doesn't own one and there lies the problem. The thread is full of people rattling on about something they don't own and getting things wrong, then arguing about them and so on.

/close thread, start a new one with strict rules/format and you might get some decent user feedback.
I think maybe what he was trying to achieve was the opinions of non-users, to counteract the PS3/Wii/360 goggled opinions of those who actually use the machines.

But only users/owners can state what mistakes need to be rectified, if you don't own something then you can't really say what it needs to make it better.
As for the guy I quoted saying 'you can't use rechargables in them' he was having a dig there, the sixasis already has rechargeable built in so why on earth would we need to put them in? which is my point, people will post just to dig the other console and it'll turn into the ever repetitive flame war.

Yes you can. I don't own a PS3, but that doesn't mean I am not allowed to say it's too expensive and over-hyped, which I listed on my list of mistakes.

It's three years for 3RROD, not life. I'm considering trading in my box for a replacement come it's 3rd birthday.

I'd get it mounted or preserved if it lasts that long for future generations to see the only surviving 360. :p

I'd honestly be amazed if a launch day console is still going in 3 years.

Ah it's not a launch one. I originally bought mine about 6 months after launch, which was returned after about 6 months thanks to a RROD. The current one was going for about a year before it RRODed, and has been refurbed by MS. Fingers crossed.

PS3: Insane amount of heat, it's ridiculous

Why does the heat matter as long as it doesn't break? :p

Unless it's noticeably heating your room up.

Anyhow;

360: RROD
360: Still no dedicated servers on Live, though not a huge deal it would be nice to back up the £40
360: MS Points system, prefer just buying stuff in £.

PS3: Not including headsets with the consoles, major lack of talking people on PSN.
PS3: Initial price.
PS3: Triggers on the controller..."what were they thinking" - avgn

Ok fine, then would you care to comment on the PS3's games and general usage instead? XMB? Options/setting? Probably not because you probably don't know because you don't have one, which again is my point. People are commenting on things they know naff all about, just to get a dig in...

Some of the mistakes that I've noticed as an owner of both 360 and PS3 (excuse me if any have been mentioned previously) -

- 360 D-Pad is still poor (thankfully rarely used)
- PS3 sixaxis triggers are curved the wrong way so your fingers slide off them
- PS3 primary control for the left hand is still the little used D-Pad - left analogue stick and D-Pad positions should be swapped IMO
- stupidly short sixaxis recharge cable
- non-removable (AFAIK) sixaxis rechargeable battery (what happens when it won't charge anymore)
- sixaxis lack of rumble
- 360 DVD noise is far too loud IMO
- 360 should have shipped with a HD drive (DVD is becoming too small)
- all 360s should have had hard-drives
- lack of built-in wireless on the 360 and the ludicrous price of the wireless adaptor (it's the same hardware as an £8 PC network card)
- 360 hard-drive prices way too high
- 360 lack of reliability (mine has been back to MS twice) and MS addressed it far too late
- PS3 needs more top games
- PS3 install and load times
- having to pay for multiplayer on 360
- intelligence insulting PS3 TV advertising
- 360 headset is cheap and prone to breaking
- PS3 looks like a sandwich toaster IMO
- the huge external 360 power supply
- no HDMI on the original 360s
- disc read and scratching problems on 360
- as well as the Wii is doing it still needed more horsepower and HD IMO

Xbox360:
All consoles should have been disk drived as standard
Reliability problems
Disk scratching problems (Happened to me personally) and having to mod your drive to scratch it. M$ quite clearly set up the console so it could be played in a upright position yet if you did that with some of the older consoles you wouldn't have many disks left by now.
All controllers should have come with some type of rechargeable as standard.

Wii:
Lacking power. No matter how much i enjoy the blockbusters i couldn't help but think what the games would be like with more power.
Lack of wired LAN connection as standard. Some of us do not like the idea of wireless for whatever reasons. Me being one of them ended up having to import a Lan Adapter just get the console online.
Lack of direction from Nintendo. They seem to have gotten lazy since their console has been the biggest success for them since the SNES. Tonnes of shovelware and a lack of decent first/second party games coming out. Being a Huge N64/Gamecube fanboy i never had one moment where i didn't have a game to play but the sad fact is there is more "gaming" on offer with the Nintendo DS then there is with Wii at the moment. The recent Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 did remind me of why i bought a wii in the first place but we need more of it!

PS3:
Don't own this console personally but the controller is far past it's used by with microsoft showing the perfection of a standard controller and Nintendo showing the perfection of new controller technology.
The console lacks games and really needs to start getting the big hitters on the shelves.
Console needs microphone as standard. Too quiet online and no comunication, which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. Communication and having a laugh is what makes Live! so much fun imo where as PSN just seems meh from what i have seen.

For the drive speed debate iirc 2x BD transfer rate is equal to that of a 20x DVD and that excludes the decrease in cycles the BD disc needs to make in order to retrack the same amount of data as a DVD. :)

Because it's very inefficient and a pain n the ass during summer. I also have to be careful what I put next to it.

So why is the 2x BD in the PS3 not outperforming an 8x DVD in the 360 when it should be equivalent to an 20x DVD by your numbers?

On the Wii front, it's probably worth reminding people that the DS took a while to get up to speed in terms of decent 3rd party games, but it's doing just fine at the moment. A year in there wasn't that much good out for it, and developers were scrabbling to push out any old rubbish for it to try to get in on the success. The Wii is at that point right now - no one expected the huge success, so no one had games lined up for it. Now they're seeing a market, so they push the quick and easy shovelware. Give it some time and we should see some great games for it.

The other complaints about lack of power and the type of first party games and the ridiculous "killing hardcore gaming OH NOES" business are more subjective than anything else. If you don't like it - it's obviously not the console for you, so why do you even care?

Well tbh ive havent seen any performance issues but maybe its because its loading 20Gb+ of data and not 9Gb??? & the drives aint that speed!

the drives aint that speed!

Fair point, not sure why I put that comment in my post =/

Corrected it in my post but the point still stands.

Nope, a lot of games are the same size as the 360 ones.
