Monzo/Starling Banking/Revolut

I've just been trying out Revolut and Starling in Tenerife. Starling wins hands down, mainly due to the idiotic €200 per month withdrawal limit with Revolut. I also find the cryptocurrency association with Revolut projects an image of not being a very serious financial facility.

I've been topping up Starling from my normal bank account and withdrawing €'s from ATMs and it's been seamless. I just withdrew €40 which has charged me £35.34 so the exchange rate seems to be very competitive too.

Been playing with Monzo for a few weeks, thinking of using it as my main account, any reason not too?

I am with the Coop and they still haven't got the app sorted for iPhone X!

Only reason I can think of is that you can get small amounts of interest / cashback from other current account providers.

Opened a Starling account 2 days ago because I had seen they are now doing joint accounts. To say I am impressed is an understatement. Even have the Mrs on-board and that is saying something! Not much "revolutionises" my life these days but this really is going to. Got so sick of waiting almost a week for transactions to show on my Natwest account. Adios Natwest!

Not keen on that card design for a couple of reasons. Firstly, I can see problems using it in places/countries where they are used to a uniform design of card which has persisted for decades, with the number and name on the front. Secondly, I don't like the security number being on the same side as the card number, it means with one simple covert photo (or a good memory) someone has the whole lot. Turning over for the security number seems logical, this does not and it looks like form over function.

It's amazing, isn't it? I honestly don't know hoe the big guns are still in business with their archaic tech.

Is it actually on show though? To me it looks like you need the app and the card to get all that info (the CVC appears to only be in the app and not on the card at all?).

Not sure to be honest - I read the comments at the end of the link and they seem to ignore that particular question so either the community people don't know, or they don't want to draw attention to the security risk.

I know it's an incredibly rare occurrence, but the lack of embossed numbers means the card can't be used with a manual imprinter. Some retailers still use them as a fallback if the electronic payment system fails (which has happened surprisingly often lately).

I'm inclined to agree with the style over substance remarks. The bank card didn't need to be reinvented. The new design looks nice, but aside from that I'm struggling to see the advantages.

No reason at all not to switch. I ditched First Direct a couple of months ago after getting fed up with their flaky app and excessive number of usernames/passwords/passcodes which I kept forgetting. Zero regrets about moving (except I didn't get the leaving bonus as it took them less than 6 months to put me off).

The speed of payments and refunds is great, as is the spending summary. I'm only doing casual work at the moment after getting made redundant in June. I can honestly say, Monzo has made it easier to budget and see where my money has gone. I just need to get the missus on board now so I can start splitting payments using Monzo.Me. Most of the bills, food shopping etc. comes out of my account, meaning Monzo currently thinks I've spent £hundreds more than I have.

I have a Monzo (Backup) Starling (Main) and Halifax to make cash deposits.

Starling is faultless, amazing bank and APP it's totally changed how I manage my money.

Monzo the same, brilliant.

Now with the two above you do not get the sort code on the card it's reliant on the APP. My Monzo does not have the account number on either so if you forget your phone and need the account details I think you will be stuck.

Also having to use Halifax to deposit cash then transfer over to Starling can be a pain.

Overall amazing CS if things go wrong. Can't see how normal banks will compete with the digital space.

Quite a few banks don't publish the account details on the card. I know RBS/Nat West don't, from personal experience. IIRC co-op don't either?

I've only had Halifax and Barclays so not sure on the other main high street banks, I thought they all did? The other halfs Yorkshire bank does too.

Caught me out one as I needed to pay a bill online and the phone was dead, had to wait till it charged ha!!

Its got to be a security thing? Why would they leave them off?

Yeah, security presumably. I've never understood why, but it worked as a good way to avoid charity muggers, back when they used standing orders. Bank details? I haven't got them. I'll just pop to Nat West...

Yeah, I could have just ignored them completely. But I was 18 and at Uni, and more often than not the people hawking for charity money were female, 18-20 and at least 8/10 hot :D It was a good excuse for 5-10 minutes free entertainment.
