More PS3's sold than the 360 in Europe

Sony really do have a massive following, the next generation truly didnt arrive until the PS3 came out for a lot of people.
Nail, head, hit....

There's a reason why almost any "TV Game" is refered to as a Playstation by almost anyone who's not a gamer. Sony re invented the genre with the original PS in a way that hadn't been seen since the Atari of the early 80's.

The fact that in 2 generations the 360 has even come close speaks volumes for how much effort MS has put into the Xbox. Especially when you consider how easily (relatively) Sony crushed the likes of Sega. Nintendo have survived and completely wrong footed Sony by being innovative and aiming at a market segment that isn't Sonys core area and have suprised a lot of people with their success. Xbox and Playstation continue to go head to head, and no matter what you say, Sony has built up a huge amount of good will and loyalty in the area. There's a whole generation of gamers that have owned nothing but a playstation, to persuade them to change to something like an Xbox, especially when the consoles are closely matched in capabilities is a herculean task.

I suspect the real knock down fight will be with the next gen. MS have got close enough to get a smell of success and will have built up their own brand loyalty. Sony will be keen to shake off the accusations of losing the plot they got with PS3 and prove they are in a different league from anyone else.

Whichever way you look at it, having this competition can only be to the benefit of us, the games players. A market with a single console would quickly stagnate and reduce to cheapset/lowest common denominator technology.

Hurrah for making the multi billion dollar buggers have to go an extra mile to keep us happy! :D

best post so far, agree with it totaly. I remember when we use to have monthly post's on total number of sales of consoles. I know we hardly see them, i suppose its got nothing to do with the fact that the ps3 has pick up in sales.

Yeah true, though won't be too big a difference but some, gotta be at least 9 million knocking around in Europe though.

I'm sure we will. :p

The 9 mil or so 360's are probably in a combination of the following

Mexico / South America
Hong Kong
India / China
Austrailia
Canada

Basically in any decent economy or emmerging market.

All the above EXCEPT Europe

AND another thing the 360 sales in the USA are completely misguided thanks to the return system out here..

As an example... According to the stats' I've purchased 5 360's.... Except I only have one.... Why because in America when you have faulty goods, you go back to the store they give you a refund and then you go grab another off the shelf.. Seeing that the USA has sold 10mil, one can only suspect that a good portion of those 10mil are replacements off the shelf for the faulty 360's.

Forum users from USA have mentioned this weird way of sales being calculated in the USA before.

People get angry when you say that the 360 has not sold as many as the raw Microsoft figures for USA state so like to brush over this fact.

are any of you actually surprised? microsoft were never going to outsell sony, not this gen anyway... playstation brand has an absolute huge following. next gen would be interesting though :)

though i dont know why anyone cares, its all about the exclusive games.

This thread is all a moot point :preally:p.

MS are much further ahead in the product life cycle and we will see the Xbox4 demoed at a guess in 12-18 months. Sony may be out selling them in the EU now but what happens if MS do the BluRay equipped 360? Sony loose their edge and key selling point.

For this Xmas, another round of price drops seeing the 360 after 3 years of release closer to £100 and a BR model could easily wipe any sales advantage Sony have gathered over the last few months. If MS have the mind they could buy out the market from under Sony with massive price drops on hardware. Since the 360 online and gaming experience is so great Sony would have no defence really, although the PS3 is a great console the economic instability and credit crunch could make sales of luxuries much more price sensitive.

Going off how far ahead of the consoles the PC has jumped again, I can see Sony being left far behind in the console sales in a couple of years unless they are pushing for a PS4 for 2010 as well.

At the end of the day, 3 years into the Next Gen consoles, the 360 has still outsold the PS3 in total volume. I doubt Sony will catch up before we see the new Xbox.

I never doubted the PS3 would overtake the 360, it's nice to see it doing it sooner rather then later..

They now need to get their attach rate up, as it's clear a lot of people have bought it with a bias for the BR drive, but are just not buying as many games for it as the 360.. as clearly at the end of the day, hardware is a loss leader, software is where the money is..

But it's all looking rosy for the PS3, and it's also looking rosy for the 360, so far it's clear that the 360 has been a huge 'success' and outpeformed expectation, the PS3 had it's hiccup and is recovering to meet it's expectation.. everyone can be happy..

Interesting ideas buddy, but we have heard them all before. This gen is only getting into full swing and sales are nowhere near what they should be for any of the 3 consoles outhere.

MS haven't even reached the amount the first xbox sold, so showing there new console so early would be premature. And a blu ray enabled 360, how many 360's are there going to be? Now that would really make there install base up to now very happy.

This gen is different, costs of making games have went up ...and while publishers are getting great sales, they are only starting to recoup the r&d costs of getting into this current gen.

Most console sales happen a few years down the line after launch, MS learnt this from sony as ps2 still sells huge amounts even with the ps3 available ...so I don't think MS want to lose out on those sales by releasing a new console when sales are still very low in the grand scheme of things.

I agree, you were a fangirl when you owned all 3 and are still one now you only own 2 ;)

rp2000

There are many people with both a 360 and a PS3 who are still enormous fangirls. It amuses me when they say they have both so their opinion is better and they can't be a fangirl. I often wonder if they bought the other console just so they could say that.

So you expect MS to introduce a BD 360 and sell it for about £100 while the PS3 price will stay the same? I expect many gaming devs wouldnt want a new gen consoles in 18 months time as they have there hands full with the current ones. I personally think that all the main consoles manufactures will keep with there current console for a few years longer than normal as the cost for the dev will increase. I still think this gen is still in its infancy and there are still tens of millions of last gen console users not taken the plunge into the current gen. The PS2 still sells about 100K a week worldwide so people are still unsure of this current gen, give it a year and the old gen will be dead and these people will have made the jump to the current gen. Think you are under estimating the pull of the Playstation name TBH, i would think give it a year and it will be ahead of the 360 in total worldwide sales

And Microsoft sold you a defective product by design and you bought it and supported it. How many of your friend's Xbox's have died?

WTF is wrong with some people?

I think you miss his point, MS have treated the major regions relatively equally with game/hardware being released at the same time, or very close together..

But Sony don't.. lets see
1. 6 month delay of the PS3 launch
2. Massively different PSN demo's/games with Europe having by far the least content
3. DS3 is not available in Europe yet..

MS did mess up with the hardware, but at least they have put the warranty in place to help with this.... What have Sony done to redress the poor treatment of Europe? Absolutely nothing, yet people still buy their consoles and support them.. seems to me like it's a pan/kettle situation..

/strokes PS3 and 360.

I have said this before, and will again.

I love both consoles equally, and looking forward to Fable 2 on the 360, and FF on the PS3... in other words... I just like the thought of all the exclusive from 360 and PS3.

True sony treat us bad, but so do all the console makers I am afraid :(
