As said I wouldn't fly over people or anything else after a couple of beers as I wouldn't also drive a car afrer a coupple of beers please read my posts if you want to quote me

You what? Have you completely missed the posts pointing out that your video breaks a number of CAA regulations, drunk or not?

Ok Ash, I used to be intrigued but that just made me salivate! Incredible skill and to think the tech can deliver video fast enough to allow it.

Let's say I bought his exact QAV250 kit inc. a fatshark for FPV;
- any pilots here with similar skill comment on how long it took you to fly like this
- is it a steep learning curve (like flying an RC helicopter)
- is it recommended to start with a noob quad then upwards
- have pilots become eventually bored with these


My current experience... I'm **** hot at flying a chopper BF3. :D

Its far cheaper than flying a helicopter as when they crash it tends to end in big damage. Crashing a 250 quad will cost you a few 50p props at most.

A lot of the modes in the control boards make quads quite easy to learn too.

If your totally new to it then you should take the OcUK approved path to quad flying :p, and get a Hubsan X4 :).
 
My 2p, quads are way easier to fly than helicopters, even more so in FPV. From the "pilot seat", if you have the cordination to play a dual analogue stick game then you can FPV. To get as good as that guy in the video? Probably not, most will never be that good :) Word of warning, get at least semi proficient at LOS flying. You can lose video for any number of reasons at any time. Being able to bring your bird back is nice, it's also good to know when ditching it is the better option than trying to save it...

As for getting bored, depends upon the person. I spend more time tinkering than flying tbh, and I love both. Recently I got a bit burned out by a couple of unfortunate accidents and hardware failures, which meant taking my frame apart multiple times within a week. I got so fed up with it. The following day I went for a fly and had the best flying session ever, so it's swings and roundabouts.

Presumably you have little/no multirotor experience? Getting from 0 to filming at 750m, with any kind of quality, might be a big ask. Depends upon how much time you have to throw at the flying. There is also the issue of commercial use, let alone permission to enter the site/land - is this turbine project something you are filming for your company or because it's cool?

If it's for work and for promo/commercial work, it'll be better to hire someone with the kit and qualifications

As already mentioned your best of starting with the Hubsan X4, then moving on to a Blackout clone that's what me and 4 or 5 others on here are you using. If your good on BF3 then you will pick FPV right away but still learn to fly LOS first.

The bloke in the video is the best I have seen by far, even the rest of the guys in his team are no where near as good. Not saying it's impossible but unlikely to get that good.

I can't really advise on the AP side of things, I just like to strap a CCD cam on and hoon about. Something like a Phantom will be suggested I am sure. If you buy one, remember you are REQUIRED to fly in inappropriate locations, put as many people at risk of injury as possible and if possible, fly drunk :p
 
Hobbyking delivery arrived... Finally have a spare battery, not sure why I've not bought one before now!

Still avoiding the 250 club. I just can't see what it offers over what I'm flying at the moment versus the money I'd have to go out and spend. Getting ever closer to biting the bullet and ordering some Fatsharks too :)
 
small, light, immensely strong. Agile and very quick with the right motors/props combo. Frame designed for FPV.

Pity you're not closer to Bath/Trowbridge or I'd let you have a go on mine.
 
Right now it's only the size/weight of mine that would really be different for me. My quad has been strong enough for everything so far and despite me getting significantly better at piloting I'm still confident that it isn't holding me back. If anything I'd be mildly worried that a smaller one would be harder to see clear :p

Need to get a video of my quad in flight from the ground to show how fast it is. I still rarely use full throttle :eek:

The FPV might change things around a little, but it depends what I decide to do when I get to that point. Leaning towards a DIY frame regardless.

I've not written off buying a 250, maybe I'll reconsider around xmas!
 
It is indeed much harder to see, especially at range. It's tiny, and it black so orientation not easy.

Putting lights on mine tonight now I have a glue gun :)
 
Don't let the learning curve to be THAT good put you off. I mainly bumble around doing my own thing and am distinctly average at that but it is HUGELY amusing :D
 
I want a 250 now, My Tricopter is huge.....Arms are long so I dare not do anything too crazy with it although it's pretty fast.

I want a naze32 for it aswell as I'm not happy with the KK board at all.

Guess I'll see what I can knock up at work frame wise :D

If it is an RCExplorer type, the frame and arms are really light weight. I've been toying with a mini tri for a while, with arms to fit 5" props. Should be able to generate 1kg+ lift with decent motors on 3S :D
