Multirotor, multicopter and quadcopter discussion - The Drone thread

Yeh I played around with exposure settings and that was pretty good, if I dialled it down too much it was too dark etc.

So used that setting as my sweet spot v
More of a focus issue then, as you can barely see the sunset, just the houses.

I rarely use filters for stills. I did try using a polarising filter for a while but gave up. I just do a bit of post processing, mostly to make up for the shortcomings of the Mavic's camera. Just a bit of clarity in the sky and raising shadow on the land is normally all it takes. Plus a slight boost to the saturation, because it is the internet and everyone seems to expect unrealistically vibrant colour!
Ahh fair enough, they do look stunning though.

I was planning on taking my mavic for another little flight. But too damn hot outside, may wait till later in the evening and take her up again to get some shots.

Yeh that's probably it, forgot to touch to focus lol. Too busy trying to get a decent shot for once.

I don't think that's a focus issue, more that the sky is over-exposed and there's no detail to recover.

I went out again tonight, as there's a stock car event at our local stadium. You can see I had the same problem as you - dark foreground and bright sky. I managed to recover some in processing but not enough really. I did snap the local air museum though during the flight, and that came out much better.

The light is beautiful right now as I type, but I'm knocking it on the head for the day. It has been far too hot, and I have a pressing engagement with an ice cold cider :)

Just was in my garden and could here a buzzing sound looked up and could see a drone, this was very very high, it was just hovering, it then zoomed off.

It must have had super range on it and been quite a decent drone. But isn't it illegal to fly these in residential built up areas, quite clearly was just snooping into peoples back gardens.

Probably, depending on what drone it is. The dji ones through the app give you warnings about flying in built up areas.

With mine, if I do fly it in my backyard I keep it in my backyard. I don't go zooming off into other people's backyards etc. I just take it straight up, take a few pics and vids then bring it down. If I want to whizz around, I take it up to some massive fields where I live. Tons of space to fly it around without having to worry about crashing into trees etc.

Abyss again stunning pics even your first one.

I know nothing about them really, its just the first time I've seen one above my garden, I thought it was a helicopter at first due to how high it was, I think whoever was flying it noticed us pointing up at it, as soon as we did it flew off a long way.

I can see the temptation to fly in a city - the pictures could be stunning. But you really can't - it isn't allowed unless you're licensed and commercial. I'm sure there are plenty of restrictions still after that - no idea what they are though. I'm sure some people look at drones like the Mavic and think that there's no real risk. But I guess a drone falling out of the sky has pretty much the same effect as somebody walking up behind you and throwing one at you at point blank range.

Hopefully people will settle down and learn before they become over-regulated. I know I've leaned an enormous amount in the past 6 months or so, and I'm certainly a much safer operator now.

I've been resisting temptation for some time to buy a drone. I really don't have a need for one and living in North London I wonder if my opportunities to use one would be quite limited (although I do like to get out on the bike and I'm only 5 minutes from some nicer, greener areas). I do love taking pictures and making videos though, seeing the pics in this thread encourages me to just do it!

The drones I'm so far successfully not buying are the Mavic Pro and more recently the Spark. The Mavic does look to be an all round better drone, with 4K as a bonus. The Spark though tempts me due to it's lower price, maybe I good idea for a beginner, not sure how much he'd use it, type person?

I guess I'm also worried about loosing it. I see these YouTubers that have them lose GPS and vanish, but then this is generally when they're using them in fairly built up areas.

I'm not too sure the purpose of this post even. Maybe I'm hoping someone will talk me into buying one!? What are people's thoughts on Mavic Pro vs Spark?

Personally I'd wait a little longer to see some proper owner reviews on the Spark. There isn't much price difference between it and the Mavic once you add the controller. At face value the Spark does seem pretty capable, but I think (although I'm biased as I own a Mavic) I'd still choose the Mavic based on the longer flight time, better camera and personally I prefer the way it can be folded up and stowed.

Thanks. All thoughts I've had too. Was thinking about the controller this morning too. Love how the Mavic folds up, I'd be less concerned about it breaking in transit. Also thought about the range of the Mavic, which I believe is much further?

It needs to be in eye sight view anyway, so being able to go 3-5km is pointless anyway.

I guess the range is more of use in other countries with more relaxed rules, but certainly in the UK is is pretty pointless. I wonder how many people stick to that rule - the Mavic is tiny and once you've gone 2 - 300 metres it is very difficult to see if you glance away and then look back and try to find it.

DJI's development cycles seem to be shortening, so I'd be really interested to see what the Mavic's replacement will look like. Surely it can only be a year or so away.

Decided to go to Hadleigh Castle yesterday evening for my first evening flight since buying my X-Star Premium. Just as I arrived, a guy was leaving with a DJI Phantom of some description in his hand. He didn't see mine as it's in a hard case.

I've only edited one shot so far and it was done in a hurry before work this morning. Nevertheless, I'm pretty pleased with it.

Couple from yesterday. I got a loss of connection about half a mile over Buttermere lake, i got scared! RTH worked perfectly though, never did regain connection, app must have crashed on my S8+

And last night's sunset straight out of cam, i need to play with this in photoshop to see if i can get some detail back. (it looks much better on my phone screen - not looked at the original file yet.)

flew over Wastwater today too, not looked at my videos, i think i'm getting some good footage to make a video though :)

I'd be interested in seeing a follow up as well - want one for Austria this Christmas!

Got a Phantom 4 for work now - tested it earlier and liking it so far - lots to learn though but I badly need trips out so I can actually fly it safely / more thoroughly :D
