^ Need for Speed Shift ^

Nice vids.

Better than Grid and GTR2?

i think you have assumed that ive made those vids ? i wish i had but the games not unlocked for me yet :(

for those who have bought the game how about some online private races on friday night ?

Obviously we'll need to see how this can be setup and if theres any options to add friends ingame etc etc

well that first lap you do really sets a strange impression of the game !!!!

bought the megane and had some cash to spare so buffed up the acceleration and added more grip. Tinkered with the control settings in the G25 preset then took it out for a spin, its not the fastest car but it doesnt feel to bad through corners.

its certainly different to the likes of rFactor in terms of realism and its not as arcade as GRiD, but after a few laps realising i cant take corners at 80mph and trying to drive properly it just clicked !!

graphics are awesome, the detail is great and the crash effects are fantastic .. cant wait to take some of the high performance cars out for a proper spin.

i guess after talking with others and reading posts you get more out of the game with a decent wheel setup. No doubt the game might need a few tweaks here and there but im sure community feedback and future patches will sort out some stuff ..

im running a stock c2d e6700 @ 2.6 4gig ram 280 GTX and its running like a hot knife through butter.

the cars in the menu do take about 10secs to load in which is strange, but i dont feel theres massive loading times when racing, it all seems fine here..

i took the maserati for a spin around the full nurburg and bloody'ell that was scary !!! practically impossible to drive around, although again i was i suppose over eager with the throttle :p .. loving the speed and crash effects, very nice touch.

time to try it online me thinks!!

Well, it's out today, and I could easily go into town and buy it. I just don't know whether I should, some people say it's alright, others say it isn't. Basically, I love GRID and play it all the time, mainly without driver assists, and want something newer, will this suffice?

well ive put in about 2-3hrs gametime and so far i dont understand how some people are plain just slating the game. It feels more like GRiD then a simulation but the handling isnt very forgiving if you treat it like an arcade game.

the graphics are top class, very crisp and with a decent PC it looks real in places. Theres tons of cars, tuning options and races plus theres online modes of which im about to go test... i dont think anyone should bother playing racing games with a keyboard, you defo need a good wheel combo to get the best out of it. So far imo its great fun, ive had to actually put in some proper driving to win races but oeverall the game is growing on me the more i play..

well just had two races online and managed two wins !! first track was Spa over 4 laps and even though i spun out twice i managed to claw it back.. second race i cant recall track name but it was small and bendy ;p

during the second race a few players dropped out and there was no lag at all, however because the game rewards players for certain styles of driving i can foresee some dirty shunts happening...

the host can set all the parameters for the race, ie car rating , laps , rules , settings which is handy, specially if you just want to race against mates in a private session.

anyone else with a legit copy tried the online ? :p

**running 1920*1200 maxed detail 4xAA btw : avg 40-60 with v-sync**

I think most people who drop out and if you can win after spinning out, it's related to the crappy controls.

that nearly made sense !!

your making assumptions that people left because you have a hard time with the game ? During the Spa race others made mistakes of which helped me get back amongst the front runners. I was in the stock Rx8 so max speed is about 115mph which isnt that hard to control, but noticeabley others were flying into 20-30mph corners at 80mph+ and therefore hitting barriers. I wish i could wave to them as i drove past :D

the main tip ive learnt so far is getting your speed right on the approach to slower corners, drop the gears to the appropriate one whilst breaking so your not fishtailing about, it just takes time to adjust.

are you using a console controller keyboard or a wheel ?

Its the fact it takes longer to load a race than to actually race ( I timed it) and that if you have an ATI card it runs like crap. From what I played I kind of enjoyed but when it runs at 20 fps or less its kinda hard to get a feel for.

seems they need to get a fix sorted for ATi users, if load times are that bad there must be something they can do..

i like the game so far but in some races fps dips 20 i had a fps dip to 11~14 fps i could not even see were i was going before this issue will be sorted it will be hard to have good experience playing the game

yep it would be nigh on impossible to play with such low fps, its strange though because your overall rig is better than im using, however i have a nvidia 280 which seems to work really well in Shift.

just found a nice vid of someone driving a lap at Spa in the Zonda !! although i think they might have some assists on ;p switch to HD and watch via youtube..

If you read back a few pages, it seems a lot of ATi users are having issues, so it's probably that.

On a different note: Are people using FRAPS or something for screenshots or is there are an inbuilt button?

Printscreen is just grabbing a shot of my desktop behind the game with a black square in the corner...

aye fraps is good for taking screenshots/pictures or making videos whilst in replay mode ..

I tied the demo and it looks ok but the game is undrivable with my G25, this happens with all console conversions grid, tocca ect. There seems to be some lag or dead zone that carn't be removed.

I'll stick to sim racing it's much easier.

did you get past the first lap and race ?

I use a G25 and it works perfectly, maybe you just need to put more into learning how the game works and tuning the wheel in the options.. once you have it sussed the games fantastic with it !

Can anyone advice me how to fix a car that is oversteering? The back end keeps stepping out whilst going round corners.

Should i be moving the balance to oversteer in the quick tuning or the other way?

Sorry for the daft question.

to be honest you need to reduce speed more than normal before corners, i changed the display to show 'mph' so it was easier to judge the speed. With GRiD you could slow any car from 150mph to stop in 10yards and although totally unrealistic the game was fun. Shift is very unforgiving if your driving like a madman, approaching every corner is different, you have to position the car and slow it down much sooner.. i know this is more common sense but it works.

lastly, it depends on the car and its upgrades.. a normal car thats had boosts to acceleration without balancing means it becomes even harder to control..

Dont suppose you would post the settings up for the G25

i tried Nights setup and found it impossible :p so i basically just tweaked the initial settings.. i did spend a good few hours arsing about with it but then reset it to default and made subtle changes..

so can these cars be tuned more in-depth and tweaked?, or are they just buy on upgrades?

theres quite a lot of customisations, your car has an inital rating for example tier 1 are usually around 2-5 ... you can purchase body kits, new turbos, new brakes, new suspension etc etc which in turn all add more pts to the overall rating of the car (**online races can have limits on the pts rating of the cars participating, for example the host can set a limit of say '4' points for the race, meaning if your tier 1 car is above that you cant use it**)

you can also quick tune the car via sliders adding more understeer, the tyre pressures the gear ratio's etc etc although ive not played around with that aspect yet..

I must confess that after my induction race i thought the game was looking poor and that the handling was broken. Ive had around 30 races in single player and a few online and having spent time learning to drive i think its fantastic, but you have to persevere because its very rewarding and fun,.

NightSt@lk3r is right, once you learn to drive and tweak the handling in setup the cars drive great, sure theres more oversteer in this game but if you understand that you just compensate by altering your driving style.. i treat the handling like GTr 2 with no assists, sure its nasty and unforgiving but once you semi-master it the experience is great. The games only 2 days old so no doubt any compatibility or controller problems will get attention in the form of patches.

Its the same thing that happened when GRID came out, people just wouldnt accept that others enjoyed it. We know theres rFactor <quality game> and we know if we have more money than sense £120 to drive a few cars around a few tracks in iRacing is probably the place to be.

Shift, has tons to offer with loads of tracks and plenty of cars to work towards and customise. Graphically its stunning in places and the crash effects depending on the speed are a superb touch. Never thought i'd say it but im actually enjoying the whoring of 'stars', going back over races ive not got the max from really adds to the replayability.

so if it was say £100 game, would it then ? :D

its just the arguement that Shift fails because its not 'realistic' is plain stupid!!

is BF2 a war simulator because it has moddled real world weapons ?

its just a game, you either enjoy or dont , simples no ?

I was waiting for somebody to say something like that

There are plenty of driving games that fairly accurately simulate driving (GTR/GTR 2, rFactor, Live for speed, iRacing, the Forza series etc etc etc)

Shift fails miserably compared to those.

ive played all but iRacing, all good in there own way but nothing like driving the real thing.

still, im sure you have your reasons for trying to change the minds of people who are enjoying this fantastic game

ah yes. that made quite a difference. still only came 3rd but that will do. as it took 18 minutes, i'm in no hurry to try it again. :D

it's 3 full laps of the ring next.... :p

have you tried to get the star for a clean lap of nordy in the bugatti ? its one of the event challenges and its pure evil !!! i might make that my goal of the day :p
