Netgear D7000 VDSL modem/router

Do you have any detailed stats from the D7000? Did you try a factory reset? Was it the latest firmware? I was always advised when updating the firmware, to always do a factory reset and start from scratch.

so I have been round the houses yet again. Happens every year at some point.

Hate my Sky router with a passion, yet everytime I look at a replacement I get put off.

I get told to buy nothing other than an asus, yet when you actually read between the lines you more often than not still have to use third party firmware, which is great but I assume things like aicloud stops working.

Netgear looks good, but I have heard about freezes and sync issues. Perhaps that was on old firmware.

Yesterday someone emailed me saying I need to look at the green box to see if it's ECI or something else. This really puts me off spending £150, yet my sky router has the worst Lan and Wifi speeds known to man.

I've already got my username, password and mac address so I'm all ready

so....do I buy a D7000 :-)

Firstly, I would go here and find out what cabinet number you are on

https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/

Maybe take a photo of it and cross reference it to one on the list below. Either ECI or Huawei.

No harm in trying the D7000 as at the moment it seems to be one of the more stable units for FTTC. The issues seem to be seen by users on ECI cabinets so thats probably why people were asking about the ECI or Huawei as it is different chipsets.

If you wanted separate items then I guess I would probably opt for an Asus unit also with a custom firmware.

Thanks

I was the first sky fibre user in my city so have one of the original setups (openreach modem, sr101 router).

Don't mind keeping the openreach modem. Just want something stable, solid and fast. That said, if flashing a custom firmware means I lose features like aicloud, usb3 storage etc etc then I'd rather not.

I believe Asuswrt (Merlin) allows the use of Ai cloud etc still. To be fair, I never had any issues with the standard firmware. Only the modem built in to a DSL version of the unit. the RT versions tend to be more reliable.

The AC87U should still work. You just remove the sky router and plug it into the openreach modem. I've used the N-56U, N-66U, AC68U all this way before.

Thanks to everyone for the help

I found a local store which had stock so I went after work and bought it :D the hotukdeals voucher had expired but thanks for the link anyway

Prior to plugging it in I read some threads and people went on about having to run various things in hex, and entering telnet commands etc etc

Basically I plugged it in, uploaded the latest merlin, entered my sky username and password and bang! connected straight away

OMG! this thing is awesome

Streaming 1080p xbox one over wifi two floors up, silky smooth with zero lag. It can also remotely power on the xbox when I'm outside the network (ie: mobile 3g) which could come in handy for a little xbox playing at work :D

Glad to hear you got it setup OK then. It should do you well compared to the old one. Just avoid asus' attempts at a dual box.

Just had another total lockup of the D7000. I had just hit around 23 days uptime this time. A switch off for 30 mins and back on again and all seems well for now. Gained another 1Mb on the DS too.

It seems my SNR took a dive yesterday from 6db down to 4.9db. It has remained totally stable although not sure if it is Christmas tree light issues or not. Certainly not from my house as ours have been up for a week or two before this.

My dB level is still low fluctuating between 4.8-5.1db. My msx attainable has also dropped by 5mb due to this. I'm hoping it's down to all the lights on throughout the street and not something more sinister.
The new billion is reportedly out in January so will maybe swap depending on feedback.

Just for anyone else interested, The new Billion devices 8900AX-1600 and 8900AX-2400 are due for release in January. This came from Billion UK and a member on Kitz forum.

Very tempted to pick a D7000 up - is there a better ac router with an integrated VDSL modem out there at the moment?

And can the D7000 be wall mounted?

I would maybe hang fire for the new Billion 8900 series of devices due out in January although will probably be the cheaper of the two when it is out.
The D7000 is a decent device if you are on a Huawei cab. It appears some on ECI cabs are having some issues with it.
There are two slots on the back of the D7000 for wall mounting if required.

Firstly, go onto the by DSL checker and punch in your number.

https://www.dslchecker.bt.com

You should get a cabinet number. Take a walk around local to your area for that cabinet and grab a screen shot. Then compare it to one of these...

Having used both the dsl-ac68u and the d7000, the d7000 wins every time for me. It was far more stable on my line, higher sync rate, millions less errors, greater range and speed with WiFi. The Asus did have better configuration and options but that's about it.

I would have a look or possibly try a different firmware. I know a test firmware was developed to use port 4 for IPTV services so may be forced with that as a standard setup.
