New Star Trek series - 2017

It was very trek to me. With a somewhat dark streak - kinda like the Equinox from Voyager. Willing to do whatever it takes to get things done. The new captain is great.
lol agreed totally, Equinox was a great set of episodes. The Discovery felt very Section 31 like to me at first. It was great seeing the Doom 3 Pinky Demon though! There's a theory going around that they're attempting to use Iconian gateway tech.

The rear view of the discovery ship looks very "Klingon"

It feels like it's going to be science experiment of the week kinda show.

That episode obviously touched on some kind of macro micro quantum enlargement experiment where something got enlarged. They already did that in voyager though....

It's certainly interesting.

That's my take on it.

Interesting episode, much more Trek like as was said.

It was nice for the
Pinky Demon from Doom 3
to show up :p

And by god that ships incredibly FUGLY, theres not a single angle its been shown from that looks good.

And could "Michael" please.....for the love of God...get that bloody front tooth sorted out? That weird incredibly bright splash of white on the bottom of a duller tooth is incredibly irritating.

I quite liked the ship from a top angle. Everything else looked rubbish, especially underneath. Looked great inside though.

Just looks too angular for my liking, really sharp edges on the hull and to be honest the engine section of the ship doesn't look like it belongs to a ship with that type of saucer. Its like 2 different designs clashed together, even though i know its a take on an old Star Trek phase 2 design. http://cinetropolis.net/wp-content/...rek-phase-ii-ralph-mcquarrie-enterprise15.png

He's too good. Isaacs is just acting everyone else off the screen. Even just standing there in the uniform, he's got more screen presence than the rest of the cast combined.

That bit where he's explaining the
fast travel/spore stuff
is just painful. Made me think "hey, Star Trek's got it's own midichlorians".

Agreed.

I thought ep3 was okay. Nothing special but more than good enough for me to keep watching with interest.

So the storyline seems to be a bit more interesting. The captain has a nasty streak in him which is good.

Unfortunately the rest of the crew are utterly obnoxious. The security chief is plain dull, the cadet is a dimwit and the science officer is the worst of the lot, snidey and camp at the same time, "ooooh I hate you, I hate you so much, no I hate you more sweetie". Hopefully they all get killed off very quickly

You don't know 1 is true. It could be classified because it's too dangerous or something. Doesn't mean it fails or never happens.

BS. It being "too dangerous" pretty much automatically means it's a failure anyway. But leaving that aside, you can't seriously think it's credible that this advancement works enough to never get mentioned again in the next 123 years of Trek history (this is set in 2256, Nemesis is set in 2379)?

4 - Obviously the Klingon knew the beast was present and didn't want them to alert it.

So the member of the alien race that the Federation is at war with stopped and made himself visible long enough to warn the away team that they needed to be quiet. Uh huh. Mind, stupidity like that would be in-keeping with the rest of the characters presented so far!

5 - Not impossible in a utopian future.

Absolutely it's not impossible. But is it likely? Especially with the (lack of) reverence shown for the chain of command so far in this series...

6 - Was explained in the Ep if you actually watched it - maybe you didn't from your other points.

Hardly. Yes, we learn that Amanda used to read it to her. That's all. That doesn't explain why she was reciting it out loud while being chased by the space kitty.

Find it laughable you're criticizing it so harshly yet you missed some obvious points. Maybe you should rewatch with your eyes open.

Ah, the familiar refrain of the injured fanboy :p 'I like it and he didn't, therefore he can't have watched it/didn't watch it right/is wrong because reasons'. Please understand - I'm a huge fan of Star Trek and I really want this show to work. That's why the faults that I'm seeing are so utterly dismaying to me.

Did this series need to be set before TOS? Clearly the visual team would have been happier doing this as a sequel to the Voyager era - then they could show advanced tech without having to worry about it contradicting the look and feel of previous Trek series. They could show a future war against the Romulans instead of a past war against the Klingons. This whole investigation into a new method of faster-than-light travel would play better without the certain knowledge that it fails/doesn't work well enough to be used. They wouldn't be hamstrung by continuity and the sheer weight of Trek canon with the stories that they want to tell.

Enjoyed ep3, much more Trek like. Like that the captain isn't another goody goody. Felt very section 31. Actually looking forward to more now.

Exactly what I was thinking, it would fit better further in the future.

Being a mad trekker there is no way on Earth that I wouldn't be watching this. I was hesitant, but I thought the first two episodes were pretty damn good. And if the third episode is anything to go by I'll be enjoying the rest of the series immensely. And like @HeX above, I also got the Section 31 vibe and, much to the shock and amusement of the other half, actually shouted 'Section 31' out loud when the black badge Starfleet badge was pointed out. :D

And could "Michael" please.....for the love of God...get that bloody front tooth sorted out? That weird incredibly bright splash of white on the bottom of a duller tooth is incredibly irritating.

I literally don't remember anything else about "Michael" from episode 3 other than this patch of hyperfluorosis gleaming in the dark of space on her molar. Doesn't help that she's a bit of a immediately forgettable "Aldi equivalent brand" of an actress as well...

I'm enjoying it so far.

Not a Trekkie so the lore is pretty vague to me but talking with a colleague and he's brought up that the Discovery could be part of Section 31? Hence the black badges and the extraordinary measures away from our usual fluffy Star Fleet expectations.

Again not perfect but I'm really enjoying it. In not looking at it as a Star Trek but simply a new Sci Fi series

Really enjoyed episode 3, big improvement over the first two. It's definiely Trek but with a darker heart, I don't think we'd have seen this without the JJ Abrams reboot.
As has been said the crew are annoying to a man, all apart from Jason Isaacs (hello to Jason Isaacs...) who acts the rest of them off the screen. Already his character has more depth than the rest of them put together.

This almost screams Terran Empire to me rather than UFP, but considering the black badges (I can only assume it's section 31 or something in that vein) maybe it's a time when the rules being bent was acceptable?

And the faster than light thing was clearly a ruse, if they want Micheal to be the smartest officer that's ever existed, then maybe they shouldn't show it like she's just been bamboozled by the weirdest man that ever existed. But it's only the third episode...

Same, there is still loads that annoy me about it but if the rest of the series is like Episode 3 then I will stick with it.

Voyager could have done with that travel tech!

And lastly... Ginger room mate need to get sucked into space with the head of Engineering!
