*** Nintendo Switch ***

After seeing what Nintendo were able to pull out of the Wii U hardware, close to Xbox One spec would be fine with me.

I think Xbox One is closer to PS4 than most people realise, and those platforms will likely be supported for a good few years yet.

The NX being close to Xbox One/PS4 rumour is gaining merit, as it's also been strongly rumoured that it will quite easily handle PS4/One ports.

These are all rumours though, I'm not really taking NX seriously until Nintendo themselves actually announce the thing.

Looks like the Nintendo NX will be Nvidia Tegra based.

That's a rumor regarding the NX handheld. It would be a powerful handheld if true, if I understand correctly Tegra X1 can deliver close to PS3/360 performance (but not quite).

Well in a recent interview Nintendo said they see the NX as "not only does the company see it as a brand new project, but one that will outperform the Wii U"

That would hardly be hard now would it, to be worse that the Wii U would take a lot.

Then went on to say "It's a new way of playing games, which I think will have a larger impact than the Wii U, but I don't feel it's a pure replacement for the Wii U.

again a larger impact than the Wii U that wouldn't be hard as it had zero impact. The New Way of playing games is the worrying bit meaning that it going to have some gimmick or stupid controller that will not appeal to the general gamer, which will then mean 3rd party developers will give it a miss like they did with the Wii U.

Hopefully I'm wrong but I can see this being another Wii U disaster.

I cannot see it biting into the current market as a primary console unfortunately. I think it will have similar or worse sales to Wii U and I wonder how many more times they can do this before going Software only.

Nintendo has no choice but to try a 'gimmick'. The Wii U failed because it offered nothing new - the screen wasn't used in a meaningful way and technically it was just a PS360.

Sales wise :
NES>SNES>>N64>>>GC<<<<<<<Wii>>>>>>>>>>>Wii U

The reality is that Nintendo consoles have each sold substantially less than the previous consoles all with the exception of the Wii. The only positive that Nintendo can take away from the Wii U is Splatoon but that also highlights Nintendo's need to branch out into different genres.

I think by "impact", they meant in terms of how you play games differently, not necessarily in terms of commercial impact. But regardless, he didnt specify how much larger (it wouldn't be wise to be specific on such predictions).

Having a "new way to play" doesn't mean that it won't also have the option to play games the tradditional way - like the Wii and WiiU can.

People seem to quickly forget the massive success of the Wii, which was really only their first home console with a strong gimmick attached, and not so long ago.

Splatoon wasnt the only game that sold well on Wii U, but for a new franchise its a big deal. The mario games, nsmbu, 3d world, maker, kart and smash all sold very well on wii u too. The Wii U helped keep momentum for these IPs strong and recognized.

Depends if you're planning on using it anytime soon. NX won't be till next year and really we've no idea what it'll be like. But if you're planning on selling it anyway then yeah, sooner the better. I was looking last night at U's, surprised to see some go for under £100. Think £85 was the lowest I seen. Think I'll deffo be getting another one soon.

A heads up from folks, the latest rumours about 'XB1-level' performance from the NX are not widely accepted rumours, some of folks who have been reporting and or discussing such rumours for much longer think this latest rumour is bogus. In fact, there's been a bit of back and forth between 2 individuals who disagree about the performance. This video explains the argument/discussion.

Back on the GPU section of the forum, there's been much doom and gloom from folks, regarding the possibility that Nvidia Tegra might be the chip to power the console and this supposed XB1-level of performance. The very latest rumours suggest that the Nvidia Tegra is actually for a handheld related to the NX and other rumours suggest that said handheld will release in 2016.

My take on the above paragraph: While it is long overdue that we got an actual goddamn upgrade from Nintendo's current ancient handheld, I still find it unlikely for a variety of reasons. First off, the 3DS is still getting many games towards the end of this year, including Pokemon. Nintendo themselves have announced that E3 will have no news on hardware and will be pretty much dedicated to Zelda WiiU. That leaves no time to announce a handheld for 'holiday 2016' release. A new handheld would need games for launch and as far as I can tell, developers are still busy making 3DS games (unless under severely strict NDA).

Is it best to sell my Wii U now?

A silly idea considering we've got no solid or confirmed information about the NX, and the fact that it could still be a flop and might not even have WiiU backwards compatibility. It's just as silly as those folks who sold their PS3's when the PS4 launched. Now they can't play their PS3 games, since PS4 isn't backwards compatible. I for one still have my PS3 (while the PS4 remains boxed) and I even still have the original Wii. Granted the latter is boxed away and obsolete since WiiU plays Wii games anyway.

It's just as silly as the idea of 980ti/Titan X owners selling their cards before getting any confirmed info about the 1080. Now that the news is out, not many people are selling their cards anymore, having realised that it's not a such great upgrade from a 980ti/Titan X (especially considering pricing of the 1080).

I kind of like the fact that we still know almost nothing about the mysterious NX.Nintendo are certainly keeping their cards close to their chest.
I really hope it's something special,it needs to be.

Rumours out at the minute that they are designing a new hand held codenamed MH.

Hate rumours haha. would have been bad enough waiting till e3, but who knows how long it'll be till we find out.

Part of me thinks the NX stands for Nintendo Cross. So cross platform gaming. It's been officially(?) said it's not a successor to the wii u. So maybe it's a beefy hub that let's you stream games ect to any device? Maybe it's like the expansion pack for the n64...like a wii u refresh. Kinda like what Sony and Microsoft are meant to be doing.

As long as we don't have to deal with the ancient and pathetically weak 3DS anymore I'm happy. I'd rather Nintendo replace their current handhelds than home console. Especially since it's been out for much longer. Could this technicality mean that games would be both home console and handheld? Would this finally mean we get a home console Pokemon main series game? I won't get my hopes up. Damn these rumours and damn Nintendo for keeping their lips sealed. At least we know it's coming 2017.

With the ps4 neo and now the xbox scorpion news it looks like the NX will be the Wii U all over again if it really is as powerful as the xbox one.
Nintendo not going to make the same mistake are they?.. :(

I was just about to Say this. What spec do we think this will release with and how does that compare to Scorpio?

Yeah - nobody wants the sub powered console. Even when Nintendo were at their best it was a tough sell without 3rd party support - and they haven't been at their best for a while now.

I Think the neo and scorpio will be taylored for Enthusiasts and with full support exisiting for XBONE and PS4, I imagine the NX will sit there nicely. We don't all want 4K gaming.

The important bit is getting devs on board and better games coming out.

Yup, exactly what I thought and could be part of the reason for the delay, so Nintendo can get better hardware in the NX. Otherwise, things are not looking great for Nintendo. Comparing performance to the PS4... not a great place to be. Comparing performance to PC might be better though.

Devs aren't going to be on board - that is 100% certain - at least not the big developers with the blockbusters. If they were then we would be hearing a lot more info from them in the form of leaks. They haven't been there for 20 years - it isn't going to change.

For years I rolled my eyes every time Nintendo said that they weren't competing with Sony/Microsoft but years of Nintendo doing there own thing means that Nintendo aren't really regarded by the public as competitors to those companies. Nintendo are just too far behind to compete directly with Sony and Microsoft to even try and make up the ground(I am not talking about hardware - anyone can build a competitive piece of hardware these days).

I believe the new platform is the most likely route. Nintendo will end up releasing a new console and handheld. The handheld will be similar in specs to the current Wii U and the next console will be around the current generation consoles. The games will be playable across both platforms allowing Nintendo to produces more games even if some games won't be suited that well to 1 of the platforms. Personally I don't think it will work as people that play games on the DS don't necessarily play consoles that much and vise versa. However assuming that handheld sells a decent amount(30m+) then it should give them a good installation base so that they can still make a decent profit off Mario/Zelda and co.

Either that or they will try and totally different approach ala the original Wii.
