*** Nintendo Switch ***

Thinking about picking up some Switch games. Going to go with Xenoblade Chroicles Definitive Edition but not sure of others. Thinking of Super Mario Wonder or Super Mario Maker 2.

Any recommendations for someone wanting a few more games?

Bear in mind that Miyamoto recently said that they have no interest in the hardware race so i would not be surprised if Switch 2 still has issues, at least in the games currently that have issues :/
I believe I've read that they are aiming for PS4/PS4 Pro level of performance which is fine with me. Nintendo's art style and games don't need 4K ray tracing to be fun and enjoyable. I don't expect Nintendo to give us Quality and Performance modes in games so I hope they target a steady 60 or at least give us VRR.

Did not know about some of these in EoW, I sussed some of them out by accident by simply realising you can forget about standard mechanics forced on you by other games, in this game you make your own methods to get places lol and it's great:

I have to admit I just hope that Switch 2 can give a decent "general" improvement to Switch 1 games without too much effort from Devs (because I don't think they'll bother) - it looks like the new console is going to be a Tech Bump rather than a fundamental change in direction so hopefully we'll see older stuff just "work better" with more RAM and power available.

I mean the Xbox Series X has been out since 2020. They could at least target that so say 1080p at 120 fps would be great. They seem to be targeting 6 year old hardware for a brand new console which seems a bit daft.

Price has to be right though don’t forget. They’ll be aiming at around £300 again I would imagine (£279 I think it was originally?). So it’s not going to be cutting edge hardware and I’m fine with that.

Why should they target that? Nintendos past console history has never been the bleeding edge of tech. They make a console that's fun to play and reasonably priced. It would be a mistake for them to make it an expensive console.

Realistically it needs to be under £300.

It’s also a handheld - expectations need to be managed in terms of power, particularly GPU power and if they are using off the shelf ARM core designs.

Personally, I can’t see any world where this is below £300.

Remember this is Nintendo…

The Switch never was and (imo) never will be any kind of performance powerhouse - Nintendo are far more interested in battery life, price point etc. than trying to deliver 120fps or 4K gaming on a hybrid handheld console.

They'll aim to deliver at a fairly sensible price point - they won't generate Switch style sales numbers with 'same thing as last time but with a bit more grunt and it costs £200 more'.

I think their biggest challenge will be convincing joe average that it's worth upgrading and delivering content that really takes advantage of and showcases the extra power on offer, when they're still clearly capable of putting decent quality software out for the Switch as it is.

For every 'gamer' with a Switch getting upset that stuff like TOTK has frame dips, there are probably 5 people whose Switches spend most of their time on RingFit Adventure and Switch Sports, which aren't going to be materially improved by making the graphics a bit better. You'll need some decent exclusive software to convince these people they need a new version of what they've already got and still works for them.

I'll be very surprised if it's as low as £300 this time. I agree with @b0rn2sk8 that it will be closer to £400. DF had a discussion about this recently and felt the hardware and inflationary costs would drive the price up compared to the original Switch. But to keep the device mainstream they can't afford the price to increase too much.

Whilst obviously a different device, in a market where you can buy an Xbox Series S for £250 or a Series X for £450, a Switch at £400 would be pretty ambitious I think - £350 I think is a reasonable upper limit if they expect to draw in the mainstream market again but it wouldn't surprise me to see them aim for £300 and drop back to stuff like an LCD screen. Possibly even launch with a 'Regular' and 'Lite' tier?

Even as a Switch fan, a Switch 2 at £400 becomes an "only if there's some proper 'must play' software" purchase, whereas £300 is more palatable as a "I don't really need it but I want it" grade purchase :p

No one wants an Xbox series S (or X) :p

It’s the same market where a PlayStation 5 pro is £700.

Even the steamdeck you actually want to buy is £479.
