*** Nintendo Switch ***

Depends on the price, if it's £10 a year I would... although being Nintendo it'll probably be more expensive than Gold or PS+...

It doesnt matter if its free again, you now need to make sure you phone is charged before you can set up to play with friends, seeing as chat is handled through the phone lmao.....they must be high.

It is a weird idea but with the Switch being a mobile device that won't always have wifi how else would you handle it?

Just had a slight loss of translation moment which resulted in my colleague being covered in coffee.

I was looking at Switch articles and he sees my screen and then tells me that I can order that at a shop nearby, called FNAC (its like PC World) and he got his numbers mixed up from Portuguese then proceeded to tell me they're advertising it for €150....

errm...well...I now owe him a new shirt and me a fresh coffee :o

ahahahah poor guy!

Side note - I love shopping in FNAC when I go to Portugal, always get some limited run moleskines.

I like walking around in there and looking at the tech. They've always got lots of nice shiny things on display :D and there is one a few minutes away from work by foot.

Reading all the comments, it seems the price seems to be the biggest kicker for everyone who doubts the Switch. So here is a snapshot of its value compared to 2 years ago:

Just over two years ago I bought a WiiU premium bundle with MK8 for £239.95. That came with 32GB onboard, an extra charging dock, amazing game and a quirky gamepad screen.

In March the option will be £279.99 + ~£48 for Zelda (£327.99). That comes with 32GB onboard, a charging dock, amazing game and a quirky gamepad screen.

So what does that extra £88 get me this time?
+ Slightly more powerful machine (Zelda at 900p rather than 720p...)
+ Cartridge based games
+ Fully portable gaming
+ 2nd controller... kind of.
+ Slightly more online infrastructure
- No dual screen gaming (WiiU touchscreen)
- No backwards compatability

I'd say thats actually a good deal for £88 more. Its about the same cost as the step up from a GTX 1050 GPU to a 1060 - just to give some perspective in from a similar market. I think come xmas they will bundle Mario with it for £305.99 and it will sell like hot cakes.

(This isn't a comparison on what to buy now just to be clear - of course you should buy a switch if you didn't get a WiiU.)

Well you can't really make the graphics comparison like that unless they both came out the same time I would say. The same money purchased a lot less graphics power back then then it does now.

It seems to me the main cost hike comes from the portability. It could also be that they are making a bigger cut from profits vs Wii U. We don't know really. But I get the feeling they could be selling it for £200 and not making a loss. The extra money is to milk early adopters to cover r&d quickly. It will be around £250 by the time Mario comes out at the end of the year is my guess.

If they can bundle it for £299.99 with Mario or Zelda late November, it will probably do well IMO :)

Christ he is annoying.

He also missed that, just like Zelda Twilight Princess, the old generation version will likely have an unstable framerate and miss some graphical features.

I'm not saying the Switch is powerful by the way.

How many people will be playing online using data on their phones?

Think we've got crossed wires, I don't think many will be playing online using their phones, when I say it's mobile I meant not tethered to a wired network.

Not sure what the advantage of the phone would be compared to an app in the Switch OS, maybe there are issues with multitasking?

Someone else made a good point about how you would actually use your phone if you are wearing headphones for the Switch?

To be honest I don't play online much and even if I do I'm incommunicado, don't have any friends who game online so for me personally it's a non-issue but do accept that it's important to others.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see what info gets released over the next couple of weeks.

The VideoGamer podcast discussed the price of the Switch and Simon Miller said he'd seen a report where if you take inflation etc. into account then it's the 4th cheapest console launched (at least from a US perspective).

Edit: Here's the link - https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/5nrsvg/switchs_299_msrp_is_4th_cheapest_console_release/

I think the guy is forgetting that all the system is packed in a portable console. Lol. If it was a proper console, I would totally agree with him, but it is not. Try holding a PS4 in your hand to play. Lol.

Plus, I am sure there is more performance yet to be unlocked over time as developers get used to it, in addition to that, when a game is built from ground up for a system, you will likely get more out of it.

To be honest sure I would have preferred Nintendo release a proper console that is somewhere between a PS4 and PS4 Pro in performance for that price. But my minimum expectation was Wii U performance due to the form factor, and it is definitely faster than an Wii U, so I am happy :D

I think Mario will probably manage to hit 1080p when docked.

Yeah, we'll see. They're going to have to do some creative tech talk to convince ppl this is a good idea! I'm sure Reggie is up to the task.

It's great new the Switch is getting Yooka-Laylee. I'm more hyped for that currently than the new Mario.

Agreed on that first point! :D

It'll be interesting to see how it runs on the Wii U, compared to the Switch.
I'm not expecting there to be too much difference tbh.
