*** Nintendo Switch ***

This looks a lot better than I was expecting and I was previously poo pooing Nintendo's more recent console efforts. Its success will be down to its price though and its power. If it was 75% PS4 power and £300 then it would sell big. At £400+ I think it will fail.

It's unlikely to be £400+

Every thing points to it being about 75% the power of the current gen consoles.

The dock it would seem has no hard drive or extra gpu power (being discussed over at neo gaf now) The thinking is when it's docked it runs at full power then when hand held it down clocks to save power, We will find out of course in time. It needs to be £299 imo.

It seems the dock is just won't add extra power to the system..

Edit: Then again if the switch is getting power form the mains, that might free up extra power as the it does not have to rely on the battery?

The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch. The main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen, which the two Joy-Con controllers can be attached to and detached from. The main function of the Nintendo Switch Dock is to provide an output to the TV, as well as charging and providing power to the system.

People take tablets (and large phones!) everywhere with them these days so I don't feel the size will be an issue personally. I'm not much of a handheld gamer myself but the convenience of it I still find appealing.

People take phones and tablets with them because gaming is not the primary purpose for having them. This is also another device to carry around as it's not like you are going to leave the other 2 things at home is it? I've never felt the urge to take a pure mobile gaming device out with me, even before the advent of smartphones and "proper" mobile gaming.

I applaud Nintendo for trying to be a bit different again (even though it's not a new idea) but I just think it will be another case of 6 months after launch support and games drying up as developers focus on the more powerful alternatives.

It's easy to see why they have gone this route as it's Japan that's there main target and in Japan it's handhelds that own the market not a consol so this way they cater for both, I think it's western markets so us and United States may go off the idea after 6 months, will be interesting to see now if nintendo bother with a new handheld or just focus on switch as a handheld essentially

Yes I agree with what you're saying, I didnt mean it would replace other devices and become part of your day to day, but people tend carry 3DS and tablets around in their bag so can't see there being a problem here when the occasion arises.

I don't typically take the 3ds out with me, but there have been occasions where I've been away from home and it's been nice to have handy, and i've left the tablet at home because my phone fills those needs while having cellular. I've also attended a few Monster Hunter 4 gatherings with the 3ds.

Now that I have watched the video a couple of times I think I am really interested. I spend an awful lot of time sat in airports and flying and mostly i just read books on my tablet. I find mobile games shallow and dull and I get bored with them very quickly. The chance to play a new Zelda or Skyrim wherever I want sounds perfect. Out in March? Sooner than I expected!

Need to hear more about third party support and pricing.

It's new, of course people are suddenly excited. Let's see what people think when the dust settles.

My point is that Wii U was new when announced in 2011 but didn't get such positive feedback, in fact Nintendo's share price dropped by 10% within a couple of days.

Agree we need to wait and see, been 4 years since the Wii U and we still don't have a new Zelda game and that was touted at the beginning.

Looks like a better effort than the Wii U. Nintendo were never going to try and match the PS4/Xbox for power so the fact it comes closer will apease third party devs. Probably be just under £300 you would think. Anything over and it will put casual buyers off.
