No Man's Sky - Procedural space game

Not that I want to defend such practices as I think owning a trademark that can restrict non competitors from using it is ridiculous.

However from what I remember patent and trademark law is a bit weird in that if you can't demonstrate that you've actively and aggressively defended your trademark you could leave yourself open to lose more legitimate cases of infringement down the line.

But you shouldn't be able to trademark an english word like sky in the first place. Technically the company name is BSkyB, but they market themselves as Sky. That doesn't mean they own the word "sky" for everything else. I suspect that if someone had the will and the money to go up against Murdoch in an example like this, they could win.

Microsoft went up against them over it back when it was called Microsoft SkyDrive. Sky won and it was then renamed Microsoft OneDrive. Given that the might of Microsoft couldnt beat them over it, No Mans Sky has done well !

They don't have a monopoly on the word Sky, the only have the right to defend it when it's used in the context of a business where it could reasonably confuse people. In the case of Skydrive, as Sky are an ISP among other things, I think that was entirely fair.

As far as I know Sky don't make videogames though, so a little confused why they've had to settle with them.

and if you go to a planet, make a load of changes, leave and then come back, the changes are all reset.

wow, Looks like i'm staying far, far away from this game then. What a shame it could have been so much better if it had online multiplayer.

Seems kind of pointless to make it SP only with no big story with it unlike other games like Witcher/Fallout etc.

What a shame!
