NVIDIA 4000 Series

So, not sure if anyone else encountered this issue with Cablemod early version of the 12HVPWR cable. The one attached is a direct replacement cable for ASUS PSUs.

I noticed they removed all the early version cables from their shop not long after I installed the attached.

I bought this in July and not long after started having black screen issues. I also made a few other component changes so wasn't initially aware that apparently there may be a cable issue.

Using an RTX 4090 FE.

Was obviously aware of the reviews for 12HVPWR in general and having issues with melting etc. etc.

Just got my replacement "stealthsense" cable. Narrowed the issues down to an Event 41 critical error usually following a nvlddmkm error.

Fingers crossed this sorts it!

So I've just set up my new FE. All is working fine, done a few tests and benchmarks just to make sure.

Only issue is there's a slight 'buzzing' sound coming from the card when under load. Most noticable at silly unlimited framerates in benchmarks.
I'm presuming this is coil whine? Is this typical for an FE? With the case closed it's very faint and I don't think it will bother me too much but can't be sure until I have everything in its final resting place.

Just wondering if this is normal or worth considering an RMA (major hassle)?

In my experience, in trying two 4090s, they both had coil whine. Pretty much the same (level of annoyance) on both cards actually.

Depends how much it bothers you, but it also has to do with PSU and system as a whole. You can get really lucky and get a super quiet one.

My Palit 3090 was the quietest card I ever had. Virtually silent with a waterblock.

Rare find from what I heard about 4090s. Seems they all have it a bit, as a general rule.

From what I understand, the "StealthSense" cables remove the sense cables completely. The one you've pictured seems to still have them?

Lot's of 4070s in stock on OCUK for £530-570, with a price chop likely within the next month. I don't deny that Nvidia would like to charge as much as they can get away with, but it's still incredibly unlikely 5070s will be £1000+. Let's be honest, vendors are already struggling to get rid of xx70 series cards for even close to half that amount - no shortage of 4070s anywhere.

As I said, in a future market then awash with PS5 Pro's - and from last weeks rumours, a potentially upgraded XBOX X arriving sooner than expected - I think it will severely limit how far Nvidia can push pricing next gen. Right now, I feel the current PS5 and XBOX X are just "not quite there" in horsepower for "faux-K" gaming. I think the console upgrades will see to that - and make even more people question the wisdom of building a PC (even with all its benefits) where the graphics card alone is twice the price of a console that can already do 60-120fps faux-K at reasonable quality settings.

Like I said, we'll see. :)

Well we've got around a year to go until the next series and in that time a lot can happen, I have no doubt something will happen in that time that means prices will go up, Pessimistic ? Yep damn right :D

Sorry, that's the old cable. Cablemod are asking me to cut it in half to get the new steathsense one for free. Realise my post wasn't amazingly clear. Thanks.

I believe the black screen and 100% fan issues were largely due to failed sense wires/pins as the cables are quite fragile compared to the main power cables. This is why they've moved to this StealthSense system which doesn't need them.

I'm currently using an original Cablemod 12VHPWR cable with my new FE but have a full new set on order from them with a StealthSense cable.

Nice work. I imagine its luck of the draw and cable specific if you have issues as I imagine loads of people still using the original cable without issue.

I was so careful with the install as well, but I guess s*** happens right?

It will, only the 4070Ti Super gets 16GB. 4070 Super will slot just under the regular 4070Ti, which makes it a pretty pointless exercise but, as usual, it depends on the price.

As per above, still on 192 bit bus.

Sounds like all the SUPERs are retaining the bus widths of their non-SUPER counterparts so memory will all match as all you can do with the same bus width is double it.

I'm surprised how many of the "tech" sites don't seem to understand the link between bus width and memory size. This is the reason we had the bizarre situation with the 3060Ti having 8GB but the 3060 then launching with 12GB as the reduced bus width meant it could only have 6GB or 12GB and clearly 6GB wasn't enough.

They are? I I haven't checked properly but I thought the Ti Super was supposed to ship with 16GB... if not and it has the same bus width than the Ti, then lol....

Actually no, you're right.

Obviously all rumoured at the moment but, according to the TechPowerUp database, the 4070 SUPER is retaining the 12GB/192bit of the 4070 and the 4080 SUPER is retaining the 16GB/256bit of the 4080.

However the 4070Ti SUPER looks like it's getting the 16GB/256bit of the 4080 rather than keeping the 12GB/192bit of the 4070Ti.

Oh, so it aligns with what I've heard. Might be a hell of a card if priced properly but it's nvidia so I wouldn't hold my breath:p

Worst case scenario, 4070 will see me through till 5000 with a bit of restraint in graphics settings.

Will you be upgrading or still using GeForce now?

Depends entirely on price. I can probably get £350 for the 3080 so if price is <£800, I could be tempted if it is offering 4080 perf. but as it is, there aren't any games where I feel the need to upgrade still and by the time we have got more consistently demanding games, 50xx will be close to release.

Only took out geforce now for 1 month for cp 2077 and PT. Was considering it for AW 2 but it ended up running pretty well and avatar runs like a dream, that and I'm not paying for the new min 6 months subscription.
