Nvidia CEO confirms 3080 3090 shortages until 2021

"Paper Launch" gets bandied about a lot here but I thought it referred to literally a launch on paper only, no stock for sale?

There is a debate on the accepted description of it and commonly gets used where consumers can't get their hands on stock for whatever reason. Personally I'm not a fan of it being used in situations where there is some level of supply.

A complete joke of a launch, from hype, to paid shill reviews, to sales, and it's still a joke people have been basically scammed into handing over money months in advance for cards with zero ETA.
"Scammed", seriously, the hyperbole on this forum is, I was going to say amusing, but it's actually scarey.

You make it sound like it's a Ponzi or Nigerian Diamond Mine scheme

As you well know, a buyer can leave the queue at any time and get a full refund.

Genuine question, do you believe the PS5 pre-order is a scam seeing as they aren't going to be able to fulfill all of the orders at launch?

I've launched a brand new product, I made 6 for the whole planet, not a paper launch?

It's an 'effective' paper launch as even distributors aren't getting stock, normally I have an MOQ on items, now I have a MOQ, but the M changed from minimum to maximum, the maximum being pretty much zero for the next 2-3 months.

I've no idea why single GPU buyers, who buy one card every few years are trying to defend this utter shambles of a launch, its embarrassing.

That's what I've been wondering, what level of stock has to be available so it isn't considered a paper launch? From some of the comments on here, every card would need to be in stock, all the time!

They were scammed in the sense that NV and retailers knew well in advance there was **** all stock, yet they took everyone's money regardless, if you can't see that that was a planned and co-ordinated strategy between NV and retailers than you're incredibly naive. So yeah, IMO the launch was a scam, from the marketing, to the paid shill reviews, to the vapour cards, to the price gouging by retailers on the AIB cards.

It was brilliantly executed campaign by NV and partners, they hyped up the cards that in the end weren't all they were cracked up to be (the 3080 is still a good card though), and their partners/retailers have millions of orders for cards that don't exist before AMD launch.

It's actually "scarey" lol, forget the spelling this is hilarious, it's scary?

:D

I have lost all excitement for this product, plus there isn't any new games which I want or that need the extra gpu power. I have pre-ordered an Xbox Series X instead and will pick up a 3080 at some point when stock levels are back on track.

You're quoting a totally unrealistic figure......

I'm not defending the launch, I'd call it a limited stock release and save paper launch for a genuine launch on paper only.

There are going to be a lot of dissapointed PS5 gamers who aren't going to get their consoles on launch day. Is that a paper launch for them?

Just trying to secure sales before amd launched

Except almost no retailer is taking orders, aside from OC...
If anything, they would want to sell as many as possible and have them in peoples hands before AMD launch, to secure the sale.

There's been loads of stock shortages this year.. heck, been looking for a TM Warthog for a while, although stopped recently, but even that.. an old product is out of stock until Feb 2021 on TM's website, lol.
I think everybody forgets what has just occurred this year...

Not defending any launch, fwiw. Just being realistic.. I want one, there are none avail, although some people have them.. oh well. I'll wait.

Apologies, my figures weren't representing Nvidia, just and example of how it is nigh on impossible to define a paper launch due to many factors involved.

However, Nvidia know how many cards will be needed to launch a product without a massive shortages, even more so with the limited popularity for the previous generation high end cards.

I've never seen such a terrible product launch from a PC component manufacturer, apart from the recent Intel launches back with in 8th Gen CPU's at the high end. Not sure how many customers Sony have, but I'd say as a % of interested parties they'll hit a larger percentage by a country mile on day one, and the real test is the festive period for them not first day of availability, don't forget there product will last 5-7 years and sell continuously for that time, Nvidia are supposed to have thing down to a tee with this happening every 12-24 months. They **** the bed, and launched a product before there was any real stock availability, if I was a consumer buyer anticipating something coming for two years, I'd be mildly frustrated they didn't do a better job, but since I'm not then I can afford to be way more critical.
