Got my two!

Only got one in my PC at the moment, waiting for my Haswell-E parts to arrive then it's time to put them both in :)

Hello there people.

Just seen the picture of the bent I/O backplate on the card. I am sorry to see it has arrived like that but being honest with you it must have arrived from the factory like that.

It is unfortunate that it is slightly bent but it only takes 2 seconds to bend it back. All of the 980's are brand new as well.

No way.

Apart from the obvious that it is not in a brand new condition, you could even void your warranty by bending it yourself.

@Kaapstad - I really do not know where in the world you get your information from about voiding warranties but I deal with warranties day in day out and this would not cause an issue.

Absolutely this. You attempt to bend it back yourself, and you make a mistake and break something on the circuit board, then you've got yourself an expensive door stop.

I can't believe an OCUK employee suggested that to you. Poor form if true.

@Kelt - This is a piece of metal and no where near the circuit board and in all my years of computing I have never seen damage due to bending this.

If i was on the support phone I would have advised to bend it back too.

Anyway having checked the Unique ID of the card it has never been out of stock and is brand new, it is just unfortunate it arrived with a little defect on the I/O.

If you wish to RMA it we can do but your warranty would not be effected in any way shape or form on the one you received from bending that back.

Thanks

Bailey

Hi everyone.

I have only just joined the overclockers forum and this is my first post :-)

I recently purchased a 1440p monitor (from overclockers of course!) and I know my current Radeon 7950 would stuggle to drive it so I have also purchased a GTX 980 (reference) from overclockers as well. I was going to get a Radeon R9 290X originally but I was a bit worried about the temps that they appear to run at (circa 95 deg C!).

It's the most money I have spent on a graphics card in a long time. The last time this much on a graphics card like this was when I purchased a Radeon 9800 Pro! That was an awesome card at the time.

My GTX 980 arrived at a UPS access point yesterday but I can't try it out yet as I am stuck in Poland on a business trip until this coming weekend. Damn! So looking forward to trying it out. I am sure that I will see a performance difference when comparing it with my Radeon 7950 :-)

I have noticed the GTX 980 prices have recently gone up so it looks like I got one at the right time too.

Just to add my 2 pence worth, I used to earn a living building and repairing desktop PCs (a long time ago now!) and it wasn't uncommon to receive the odd adapter card with a bent I/O plate. I always bent them back and never had a problem with them and it certainly never caused any damage in the process. So the advice to simply bend it back is good advice in my opinion although I do appreciate that these graphics card aren't cheap.

Gonna back Bailey up here!
The card is not bent, the cooler is not bent, just the IO plate which are very easy to bend back, I've done it with my hands before and as already mentioned it does happen as that part of the io bracket is weak.

If an actual card was bent or cooler then yes get it back to us.

So it's not poor show for a customer service agent to recommend this action as it's a quick one minute fix that if works is far less hassle to the customer than returning the card. You can't break the card by bending that part of the io plate.

Of course if the customer was not confident in doing so then returning it is no issue but bending an wonky io plate back takes seconds and cures the issue, RMA process is harder for the customer.

Just fitting that will straighten it. Seems a lot of hassle to RMA just for a quick tweak with some pliers. Seems to be an excuse to RMA as its a poor clocker tbh. I'm sure if it was a good clocker the bracket would have been a non issue...

Just seen the price of the EVGA 980 SC. Blimey that price has skyrocketed! Considering I got mine for £470. It's now a whopping £530...

Did the pound fall into the fires of Mordor when I wasn't looking?

That's flipping horrendous, that's scumbaggery behaviour, it was bad enough when I saw they upped it to 500 from 470. I'm getting mine for £405 though that's with a £25 discount, and I do have to wait till they come in, but then you have to do that here as well, all I can do is shake my head in disgust at this.

The prices has gone up because People will be looking to SLI their EVGA SC and it is sort of a last buy. I'm not agreeing with the price and this is why I actually sold my EVGA SC and bought two non references cards when I saw EOL on them.

My case is small so reference is much better for me. I need heat to go out back of card. No more that dump heat in case.
