Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

Thanks for the information. I must admit that it has been a little worrying when you order one brand and then you think another has turned up...!

I did not know about the KFA / Galax relationship, I thought that they were two entirely different brands, like MSI and Asus.

My cards are absolutely cracking, got my own custom bios on them now locked at 1.225v max and rock solid at 1506/8000. Game temps max out at 67 on the top card and 63 on the bottom, the air boss coolers are beastly (triple slot).

Have benched them at 1591/8300 with 1.3V in firestrike which once updated hopefully should be good for 2nd/3rd.

My 980 Strix gets here tomorrow, replacing the MSI 970 I am in the process of RMAing. Hope it's as quiet as my current card which had no coil whine at all. The fan stopping at lower temperatures was the deciding factor in my choice.

For the first time I'm seeing almost all the memory being used ina game, all 4GB.....

Newly installed GTX 980....

Previously installed MSI GTX970.....

put aside the FPS for the 970, or at least understand that the card was overclocked.

Not sure why but I never could get the 970 GTX to show that it was using its full 4GB and yet on the very first test of Dying Light the 980 shows more in use already.

Might mean very little but what it does show for me at this stage is that my newly arrived card is working...!!!!

The drivers would try it's hardest to get at or below 3.5Gb if possible, I noticed this especially in Dying Light.

Looks like the snow in my area is slowing the delivery down, will be here around 3pm when I've gotta pick the daughter up from school! Typical, might have to get a neighbour to sign for it.

Without sounding conspiratorial why would that be done for the 970 and not the 980.....? It is not the first time I noticed this. I assumed that part of the memory was reserved for some reason. I hesitate that it was due to the recent events etc around the 970 but it is nice to see the 980 utilising it to the fullest.

How does the kfa2/galax sound in idle? Especially compared to the passive cooling mode of the strix. I would get this if it's virtually as quiet.

Obviously fans spinning generate noise but if the rpm is low enough that translates into almost no noise inside a case.

Aren't people concerned that when games are already butting up against the 4GB limit (fair enough Dying Light is poorly optimised though), this will soon be far more prevalent, and therefore it won't be long before you're having to routinely crank down the detail level to get them running smoothly, even with a costly 980 SLI set-up?? Seems to be an issue that the 8GB 290X cards won't suffer with for some time, and they're cheaper. Perhaps I'm missing something though.

I'll be upgrading as soon as something with 8gb vram and more grunt comes out. That was my intention when I bought 970 SLI, too.

This card is a stop gap for me.

Well I got my 2 kaf2 980s this morning. I ran haven and the gpu 1 is hitting 80 degrees and gpu 2 is 69. Is there anything I can do to lower the temp of gpu1? My gpu is cooled by the cosair 100hi and the rad is mounted on the top of my case.

Was hoping i might be able to oc the card a bit I tried a 75 core increase on afterburner and gpu 1 hit 89 degrees after 6 mins whilst gpu2 was at 71 .

Can't hear it.

I'm running 2 980's @ 2560x1440p and up to now the only game that ive noticed any stutter in is Shadow of Modor and thats with everything set at max including ultra textures. It doesnt happen very ofter and at all other times its at 60fps with vsync as im using a 60hz monitor.

Battlefield 4 all settings set to max with 4xmsaa and no stutter whatsoever and again capped at 60fps all the time with vsynch.

Dying light, recently started playing this and can report not one single issue.Everything maxxed apart from view distance ive got it set to around 70% anything above and fps can at times drop below 60fps.Apart from that everything maxxed out.

Personally im not going to worry about having 4gb of vram for the near future.
