Oblivion Peformance So Far

spec in sig, what performance am i expecting @ 1280x1024, as its on order....
I have a similar, but lesser spec to you - DFI Ultra-D with Opty 170 essentially at stock, X1900-XT overclocked to XTX speeds, 1Gb Corsair TWINX3200XL, ViewSonic 19" VP930 at 1280x1024. Not really overclocked the CPU or RAM since I've been having too much fun to be bothered :D

With most settings at max (& vsync on) I get a solid 60fps indoors and typically 45fps outdoors. I've never seen the frame rate drop below 25fps. I have yet to seriously attempt to tweak the settings since I've spent most time indoors so far so haven't felt the need. I'm using 6xAA and Bloom since I hate the jaggies! Tried HDR, but can live without it.

cool, i've only just posted a question in the "oblivion PC or 360" thread asking how the PC draw distance compares to the 360 version, would be nice to hear you opinion also.

Get the PC version as your spec is good enough to run it really well! :D my bros pc cant run it so he bought the 360 version.....not like im gonna let him near my pc for a while ;P lol!

Anyways! our hdtv is running the game at 720p and it does look good but.....its slightly more blurred, due to the res and thus looks crisper on my pc! :D also the controls on the PC id say are a bit better as the mouse is clearly your main weapon of choice.

Performance wise i get the words "loading Area....." coming up however no pauses not even for a split second whereas the xbox does have it pause slightly and its annoying as it loads areas very frequently. PErformance wise you will find that in general a top spec pc WILL perform better over the 360!

Yeah also there appears to be a bug in self shadowing where it gives a grated look over creatures...so i turned that off but thats it!

PC Spec below is running the game fully maxed at 1280x1024 as HDR is a lot better than Bloom IMO

Thats my take on the subject so far......

P.S cant believe my thread got taken up by everyone lol!

Im running an Asus 7800GTX 256mb extreme gamer edition, 1 gig Corsair XMS (bought another 1 gig for oblivion today), and an AMD 4000. It runs so nice. I've even tweaked the ini so that trees and grass are rendered as far as you can see, and water reflects everything. It jumps now and again, and I need the extra gig of ram to speed loading time back up, but otherwise, it runs real nice! Look on the oblivion forums for the .ini tweaks, if you have a graphics card at least as good as mine, their well well worth the effort! There were also water issues reported, my ini has these fixed. HDR enabled.

Thats it,, im off to get the pc version from tesco in a minute, Ive had a play about on my 360 version and think its a great game the graphics are what I would call ''pretty good'' although the 360 is struggling yet again with this kind of detail and this is very evident in the framerate stutters. Ive got 6800gt's in sli and my pc is set up dual display with a sammy hd lcdtv and a 19'' tft also the 360 can use both these displays so im gonna do a bit of a comparison and have both games running side by side and then switch displays... Ill probably settle with whichever version runs best then sell the other :)

DAMN, went out in all this wind and rain and found they had totally sold out :( still had 360 versions,, just my luck, Igot a £7 voucher for game, that should get me one close to rrp, lol..

This is probably asked a lot but....

I'm playing this and am getting around 15-25 fps outside, 60-75 in dungeons and indoors. 1024x768 res, Bloom and V.Synch on, AA off and HDR is not supported. I've got most of the distance sliders medium/high and the rest medium (overall medium-high). Getting into fights in the forest I'm finding more annoying as I move around a lot and I don't find it bearable sometimes...

My spec is:
AMD A64 3200+
DFI LanParty nf4 Ultra-D mobo
Geil 1GB (2x512) Dual Channel kit ram (3200)
Powercolor X800XL 256mb card
onboard sound

What I'm asking is, which of the following would help improve FPS performance the most, if there was only a choice of one thing?:

- new cpu
- new graphics card
- switch to 2gb of ram
- get a soundcard (possible to get anyway if cheap)

I'm Looking at around £200-230 maximum. I want this game to run smoother and I was going to try tweaking but it looks like bad performance is hitting everyone. However it runs, this is still an amazing game :)

I'd overclock your cpu, get yourself a PowerColor ATI Radeon X1800 XT 512MB, thier on speicel at the moment, only £234.94 Including VAT, also take into account the money you'll get from selling your X800XL, that *should* leave you around £70 so if you wanted to you could upgrade further and sell your currunt ram for £35 that gives you £105 which is the price of a GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit from OcUK, in theory anyway :)

hmm sounds interesting, thanks :D

I'm not sure I want to overclock anything though, everything is running stock and I'd rather keep it all safe.

If say, I just got new ram, would the CPU and gfx bottleneck better performance? and is the gfx card really the main factor in speeding things up?

I wouldn't mind selling it, I was just hoping my x800 xl would perform a bit better than it has with this! Quite a bit of money for me you understand :)

Thanks

Still have not got a copy for pc yet but I had a good play on 360 last night and just want to add that the draw distance is pretty terrible on the 360 when Im outside the landscape in the distance looks fine (green rolling hills) but as you walk things just pop up in front of you its about half way up your screen that the pop ups happen (in the distance would have been acceptable), grass flowers plants and stones just magically appears and looks as it is being laid down or rolled out as you walk, also obstacles appear when your almost on top of them too late to change course,, all this on top of the terrible outside framerate really puts me off playing the game, I wish they had toned down the graphics and improved the fps a bit, TBH I dont know how they can call the game playable, im not exagerating the game stutters and stall all over the place. its really put me off my 360 at the moment

2gb of ram would help you but it would just decrease loading times in the game. The best bet you have is to overclock your cpu, its free and if you read the sticky on top of the overclocking thread it makes everything easy to understand. If I where you i would overclock the cpu and buy 2gb of ram.

Would overclocking the cpu really help? I remember looking at gpu benchmarks with the full range of A64 cpu's from a 3200+ to an FX57 and there was no fps increase at all when adding a faster processor to the same gpu, thats the main reason I stuck with my A64 3700+

I would go with the gpu upgrade and then the ram if you needed it.. on the other hand it wont hurt to try overclocking your cpu and its free :)

Thats correct, gpu benches wont change much if any overclocking cpu even in 3d mark 2005/2006 as you only score on the gpu tests, but new games today unlike years ago are more and more cpu dependant, so you no longer can bang in a new gpu every few years and game to max again, you need a half decent cpu + gpu now, this is not for all games, some will still mainly rely on the gpu but more and more use both to max now.

A modest overclock is extremely unlikely to harm anything and can yield excellent results. It’s worth thinking about :)

Reading over at the [H] forums, Oblivion seems to be the game that has finally made people curse at their 2405's.

I haven't got Oblivion yet, but just reading about this tempts me to drop down to a 21" WS

1920x1200 is sooo much fun, but I am beginning to see it's going to take some serious cash to keep good frame rates on it for the duration of it's life :(

And yes, I don't like running outside of native - damn my eyes!

I was playing it last night on my 3700 @ 2.65ghz - and Asus 7900GTX.

Draw distance is terrible, things popping up, frame rate goes from about 80 odd (at 1280x1024) down to 20-25 when things get hectic).

This is with HDR btw, ive not tried it without.

To the guy saying he's maxxed it out and its running smooth, dream on :p

Id say no pc could play this at a constant 60fps, even a FX60 and sli 7900GTX's.

The graphics arent great either, its just really shoddily programmed.
